Revanced still costs $0/month.

I don't trust them one bit, but this makes more sense than EEE. The fediverse just isn't that big. We don't have anything they want. But what they do want is to be allowed to launch Threads in the EU without DMA issues.

People are worried that they'll embrace, extend and extinguish it. That is, join the fediverse, make Threads a better client than any of the existing ones until everyone uses their client, then use that extra reach to harm the fediverse.

I'm personally not that worried, because of who we are. We're a bunch of geeks with anarchist leanings, and so probably wouldn't switch to Threads anyway.

It's like people are forgetting that piracy is actually illegal.

Well, yeah. It was the cool new thing, now it isn't.

It's because they grew up with it rather than actively learning it. UIs have started to hide the actual details, so the users don't pick them up.

Yeah, it's the ultimate midwit take. Smart enough to realise it's an abstraction, not smart enough to realise that there's a base reality (goods themselves being scarce) beneath it.

I mean, you probably are, especially if it's explicitly political. All I can recommend is CONSTANT VIGILANCE!

Because it's all signalling, there's nothing really there to get. The reason "people of colour" is okay and "coloured people" isn't isn't because of any real difference between the phrases, but because people who use the former are generally supportive of them, while people who use the latter aren't.

  1. I'm not American either.
  2. The vast majority of countries in the world have copyright.

Now I'm not morally against piracy, pirate away. It's just illegal.

All social media has network effects, in which the value to a user is roughly proportional to the number of other users (probably not fully proportional at the high end, but definitely positively sloped).

That's exactly the point. The reason "coloured people" isn't okay is precisely because people like that moron use it.

Somewhere that isn't a little bitch, yeah.

Choice 2. 5 is ridiculous and more harmful to the fediverse than the worst case of EEE.

mastodon.world has decided not to, so I don't think we will.

I mean, ActivityPub as a whole sucks at privacy.

So the argument for them bending the knee is that someone on a different instance disagrees with you?

It's all getting a bit Judean People's Front around here. I know there's a generally leftist userbase, but do we have to do this?

That's less about defederating with Meta. Meta are the Romans. It's about people defederating with anyone who federates with Meta.

Lemmy.ml has a slur filter that bans words like female dog (derogatory) and prostitute (derogatory).

Because they really like conspiracies. Meta is only the regular level of evil it was before, it's not a new improved variety of evil.

Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.

I'd like to be that variety of pirate, at least in the older style. Not so much a modern nautical pirate though.

I'm a mod of a small subreddit, which I have attempted to move to Lemmy, but as I'm not the only mod, the sub is still up and far more active.

NewPipe's great, but it's less useful because I prefer some features it doesn't have (like the ability to log in).

There's a chance I'll move to kbin, although I have a community here. But in general, Lemmy makes a good Reddit replacement.

I'd like to disagree with OP, but a lot of us did join after Reddit fucked up.

Ok, imagine if Reddit had been part of the fediverse in the way Threads is planning to be. Then, when spez needed to fuck himself, we could have migrated more easily to another instance, without losing access to Reddit.

I'm not sure about you, but that sounds like an upside to me.

Yeah, the thing about screwing over Redditors is that Reddit started because Digg did something similar. Fucking off to another website is where it all started, and will be where it ends.

Two zs, otherwise it'd be the past tense of speze.

Exactly. I don't want to join Threads, but I'm happy to federate with them.

Fuckity bye. There's a lot of other instances that don't federate with Threads.

It has one hole. While it appears to have two holes, if both are closed, you get a hollow sphere, which has -1 holes.

If it were just that dimension, where's all the (right-)libertarians?

Comparing mere assholes to Nazis is antisemitic, much less comparing anyone who disagrees with you to Nazis.

They often seem to blame capitalism for the fact we're not in an impossible utopia.

It's called beehaw, pretty much.

This sounds like a https://xkcd.com/2501/ moment. Your average internet user probably doesn't know there even is a Linux, and might be able to install mods at a push but not troubleshoot them.

Yes it is. Is there enough food for everyone to have whatever they want? No. Then it's a scarce good.

  1. 23, so no.
  2. Enthusiast, yeah, trying to get into tech for a job, but don't have the CS degree they all want.
  3. No, but not by choice. Not running Linux because I buggered my UEFI somehow, and so it won't allow me to boot from USB or switch to my Linux partition.

I think it's because early Millennials are near the peak of techiness, and the sort of person to switch to an open-source, decentralised, somewhat anti-commercial website is also the sort of person to use Linux. I'm early Gen Z, but fit the other two categories.

Mate, if the word "histrionics" is abusive, wait till you see the rest of the internet.
