I can't help feeling like Obsidian really missed the mark on their pricing here for hobbyist & home users. I can't justify paying substantially more than something like iCloud or Google Drive storage when I'm using Obsidian to just sync some text and a few documentation images. Something like $1-2/mo would have been an instant buy for me, but at $8 it was worth my time to investigate other ways of syncing.

I use it when casting my patients who have a partial hand amputation. It works great as a separator for casting agents and allows me to easily easily slip a cast off of them. It also helps prevent ripping out too too many hairs during the process.

UPS has by far been the best of the delivery services for me. A year or two ago we had 4 packages stolen because the FedEx knucklehead put a package up on the doorstep in a very visible position that drew a thief onto our step. The FedEx box and 2 UPS packages hidden in a bush were taken as a result.

A few days later UPS came to deliver a soundbar that he couldn't hide in front of the house. He waited for me to get on the doorbell camera and I opened my garage for him. He brought in all the other packages from that day too. Top tier service.

My company switched from UPS to FedEx in 2020. We get a stupidly good rate on shipping, but in exchange they sometimes leave packages worth several thousand dollars behind our office after hours. Was never a problem when we had UPS.

Even on the Windows side of things they're frustrating. Company took my perfectly working Thinkpad and replaced it last September with an "upgraded" Dell Inspiron laptop. It's a piece of crap. Wakes up all the time in my bag, randomly drops wifi, and randomly drops ViewSonic monitors. Official IT solution: this happens sometimes, we don't know why, and we're going to send you Dell monitors instead.

It's pretty much always been this way with the HP ones. Years ago when wireless printers were not the standard, we used to connect a printer to the family Windows PC and then share it on the network. We got a new one set it up, and the printer refused to be shared. Turns out HP had explicitly blocked network sharing in their Windows software driver for that printer. Never purchased another one since. Brother isn't perfect, but I have multiple 8+ year old Brother laser printers still in service right now and they "Just Work."

They're coming as part of the new Find My Device network. The launch has been delayed until Apple releases their portion of the joint anti-tracking effort.

A Comma 3 to run Openpilot on my Honda Civic. It's lane keep / adaptive cruise control on steroids. I drive about 40 thousand miles each year for work, 46 miles round trip on "local" days. Having that level of driver assist on the highway makes a life changing difference. I arrive less fatigued and feel more capable of reacting to hazards. Their tagline is making driving chill, and it really has delivered. I don't know how I did this mileage before Openpilot.

Same. Firefox Mobile had been a laggy mess when I used it a few years ago, but a combination of some really aggressive advertising and the announcement of manifest v3 caused me to give it another shot about a year ago. It's a dramatic improvement in phone browsing.

The more I've thought about it the more I think Pete really is one of the safer candidates in that list. He's already been vetted at the national level from the 2020 cycle. He's wicked smart, is a great debater, and from the people who have seen him speak gets people excited. He has a national presence already and doesn't require giving up a governorship or senate seat.

Prosthetics. Costs are always blown way out of proportion because the media looks at just the device and ignores the professional expertise and custom fabrication work that goes into the devices. They also all like to hype that arms are "mind controlled" when they're all using different variations of the same myoelectric technology that's been around for years. There have certainly been dramatic advances as a result of better battery technology and 3D printing improvements to rapid prototyping, but what the media presents is typically very out of touch with reality. It's even worse when you go from news media to movies and TV shows that set completely unrealistic expectations for patients.

Lots of good advice here. I've got a bunch of older WD Reds still in service (from before the SMR BS). I've also had good luck shucking drives from external enclosures as well as decommissioned enterprise drives. If you go that route, depending on your enclosure or power supply in these scenarios you may run into issues with a live 3.3V SATA power pin causing drives to reboot. I've never had this issue on mine but it can be fixed with a little kapton tape or a modified SATA adapter. It's definitely cheaper to shuck or get used enterprise for capacity! I'm running at least a dozen shucked drives right now and they've been great for my needs.

Also, if you start reaching the point of going beyond the ports available on your motherboard, do yourself a favor and get a quality HBA card flashed in IT mode to connect your drives. The cheapo 4 port cards I originally tried would have random dropouts in Unraid from time to time. Once I got a good HBA it's been smooth sailing. It needs to be in IT mode to prevent hardware raid from kicking in so that Unraid can see the individual identifiers of the disks. You can flash it yourself or use an eBay seller like ThArtOfServer who will preflash them to IT mode.

Finally, be aware that expanding your array is a slippery slope. You start with 3 or 4 drives and next thing you know you have a rack and 15+ drive array.

Anything I've listened to with Ray Porter reading it. His intonation is great and just brings that something extra to the stories. In particular Project Hail Mary and the Bobiverse books. He also did Paradox Bound, which felt like a fine time travel story but his portrayal of the voice of the "faceless men" made the character 's menace come to life for me in a way I don't think would be captured in text.

My aftermarket Openpilot setup does this with a camera pointed at the driver. I'm good about paying attention but apparently if it alerts too many times that you're distracted it will disable itself until you restart the car.

When I bought my 3 it was $2200 including the harness for my car. Now the newer 3X is $1450 including harness (economies of scale!). I've been running it for 2 and a half years now and have 80,000 miles logged in my unit.

I'm using it in a 2016 Civic Touring which was their original dev car model so it's well documented and had a modification available to get necessary torque in tighter highway turns and be able to slow to and resume from stop. Other cars may work better or worse in terms of torque and ability to control speed. They have pretty extensive vehicle listings on their site and GitHub detailing the capabilities they are available depending on the car.

I don't work for Comma or anything, just am a fan of the tech and how it has allowed the controls in my car to get better over time rather than being stuck with what they shipped in 2016. My wife's 2021 CR-V has better stock driver assist than my 2016 Civic, but my Comma's assist experience today is far better than either stock system.

Also if doing this sometimes remote playing over Sunshine/Moonlight has dramatically better performance than the built in Steam remote play. Seems to vary by game.

The workarounds listed are for Airmessage but they apply to Beeper as well in terms of getting your phone number attached. I've been using method #1 successfully for about a month now.

There's a bit more to it than just the Central Perk part. They've recreated the apartments and a few other major scenes and have a lot of props from the show. We had just finished a rewatch of the show and found it pretty enjoyable on a rainy day in the city. I think we spent about an hour in there and came out with some cool staged scene pictures. I still thought it was overpriced, but didn't feel ripped off.

I've had the exact opposite experience historically. Of 5 Seagate drives I've purchased over the last decade or so, only 1 of them is still working. Meanwhile 25+ WD hard drives are still in production over the same time with only 1 that started throwing smart errors a couple years back.

It seems a lot of the new ones have a cellular modem. On the surface it's to let you remotely access the car or do a remote start. Even if you don't pay to subscribe and use it for your purposes they can utilize it to transfer out the data.

Well said. I had hardware that was killed by "upgrades" or manufacturers discontinuing them from their cloud features. I now instal locally controllable hardware as much as possible and it has led to a much more stable and long term reliable smart home. Everything ties back into Home Assistant. The only remaining things I have with a cloud-reliant integration are the robovac our Nest Protect Smoke Alarms, and smart vents. The only reason they're cloud controlled is there wasn't a viable option that met feature and price point requirements. Everything else, (65+devices) is local Wi-Fi/Homekit ZigBee or Z-Wave

Seconded. I just used it this weekend to go from a 1TB drive to 2TB drive on a system with a single NVMe slot. Connected new NVMe in an enclosure, ran the copy, and the system shut down when done, I physically swapped the new drive in and it booted first try.

Not necessarily. I'm on a daily medication that has a generic but is available in both extended release and immediate release forms. The extended release provides a more consistent dosage and has historically prevented me from getting sick. The immediate release causes inconsistent spikes and I have a history of getting sick on it. Insurance refused to pay for the extended release type for about 2 years before it made it onto their "formulary." In the meantime I was using GoodRx and paying $100/mo instead of my paid health insurance pharmacy plan to make sure I wouldn't get sick. The person I spoke to at the pharmacy management wing of the insurance company literally told me "you can get an app on your phone which will tell you when to take the immediate release medication."

The same people who voluntarily put themselves in that torture chamber then tell me that Fox "has really gone downhill" so they've gotta get their Newsmax. Totally disconnected from the reality of the world.
