Now I understand why some people in the comments from other platform said "Fedora is the new Ubuntu"; in popular perspective today! Loud applause to the Fedora Dev team! Respect.

Why not jumping directly to Podman if you want more resilent system from beginning? Just my opinion

Totally agree with this. The more you understand the terminal, the more you know how fast and efficient command line is (not for all activity, but many of them are easily done through command line) rather than through UI. But it takes time to understand, not in insant.

Thinkpad x200s (2009) with Core2Duo SL9400, 2gb RAM, 128gb SSD + AntiX Linux with herbsluftwm.

Firefox will not perform smooth here, but very usable. I watch youtube video from Yewtube on Terminal + mpv, browsing only on Lemmy, news on Newsboat RSS feed, Palemoon if some news sources are heavy, and download with wget.

IMO if you experiencing problem on Firefox with that spec, I think there's a problem with your Operation System or your OS is very hungry power. I recommended using Q4OS linux with pure profile installation for minimalist system out of the box in KDE environment. The performance are very good on my Thinkpad x260..

Supporting open-source digital environment and resist to big corporate's monopoly.

+1 for this. My tech hope in 2024 is.. "RISC-V has reach the perfect system for consumer level" like I installed Debian on my thinkpad laptop, without any error..

  • Newsboat Lightweight, custom rich, with very cool look on terminal.
  • Doom Emacs Very hard to use. But once you got it, nothin can beat its multi-function note!
  • Freeplane Must have software to mapping everything you want perfectly and very lightweight brain-mapping.

something strong enough to be a stable link in my entire network; if that makes sense. Because I have many plans for things I want to learn about and add to my network or system down the road.

You need to check out Fedora Podcast EP: Getting Fedora with your Lenovo. For the first time they take laptop compatibility with Fedora Linux ecosystem seriously and announce it with such a deep detail on how they do that.

how am I supposed to know which machines are better or even “compatible” with Linux? like all linux distros or flavors?

I think Thinkpad line seems to be your right choice. Not for all linux distros, but at least Thinkpad has used by many developers in the world, so probably more compatible than other laptop brand IMO.

what does Linux have that I need?

  • Better interface than Windows (KDE WM)
  • Stable and noo downtime internet speed like Windows because background update, can increase your internet speed to 40% (can up to 80% in my case with Q4OS + pure profile installation)
  • Customizable interface according to your preference (with learning curve first)
  • As a home desktop, there's so many useful apps from Linux (Recoll for example) that you can't find on Windows
  • Very lightweight and power save (according with the linux you use)

What can motivate me to migrate?

IMO when you migrate to Linux, you can learn many things that you never think about before and it give you the easiest solution for daily life. From piracy, privacy, ideology, and deep tinkering other things that you can't do on Windows (Coreboot / Libreboot, or HAM Radio hack for example).

What is a good Linux to have for a desktop + steam?

Pop! OS is the best choice you have. But if you want to create home desktop for your family using it, I recommended Q4OS with Pure Profile installation, just install Firefox + Ublock Origin and you can go perfectly good..

Thank you so much for this! I discovered some good stuff from here..

+1 for that Thinkpad

Yeah, this is very complex idea and also at the same time, I think IF open source community can handle or focus on privacy and security to the max that even Quantum Encryption can't break it (again, from our community first rather than come from military standard or big corporations), we can create FOSSicon Valley in reality. Of course there's a pros and cons bout this, but I think if we think about it together, then the problem would be solved by the nature of open source itself. This is imho from optimistic POV for this topic..

Debian gang rise to the max!

AntiX wouldn’t let me install any packages or update. It would keep telling me I needed to wait a few hours to access the repos. I did like how you could swap between several desktop environments easily.

Just manual change the repo and problem solved..

And I need to clarify this because AntiX IMO, under category Permacomputing for low power consumption without too much sacrificing the function than others [in my experiment].

Not the most powerful cpu, but for 12 inch laptop w/ Intel 5th gen, this is awesome! Really hope Libreboot tinkering with this laptop..

Thank you so much for this!

AntiX-Core is what you need. I found a 'stable LTS and true minimalist system' without dbus, elogin, and systemd. You can check the installation here from anticapitalista. Create this from VM, snapshot, and install on your device.

Danngggg.. 3 hours maannn..

I'm really curious from this, is there any perfomance impact if we change to Libreboot? if so (boost windows performance at least up to 10%) then I'll take it for my audio plugins set live. Really cool to see T440p Libreboot-ing here!

Buku with extension Bukubrow is already good for me to have offline bookmark manager, flexibel function on CLI or browser. With Archivebox combination in my Librewolf reading my archive website.

my pleasure..

Upopular opinion: Herbstluftwm.

+1!

You can check the hardware compatibility list in here. The level support begin with Ships Fedora, Supports Fedora, and Fedora Friendly.

can you tell me your testing with bookshelf? really curious with the ui and your opinion on it.

I think you misunderstood or.. don't get the point "worst language" part from what he said. My point come from his point who's more expert. If you think like that, what can I say? and I'm not trying convience you to understand too..

Back to your knowledge and understanding. But at least for me, I agree with him that rust is 'hype-like' or 'pop culture' thing. Like cyrpto (he said in ask session), but from technical perspective, that I personally understand. I just lost the source to explain this, but it's up to you..

There are may layers of security that every companies have different approach based by their users / their target customers.

Maybe you can experiment Croc if you want simplest way.

Luckily Xubuntu did the trick on that old laptop

yeah, because ubuntu have more stable repo server than antix. but if i comparison two of them in power consumption, antix used less power 3x in ram than xubun.

If Google and Qualcomm already develop RISC-V on smartwatch in 2023, then why not on laptop in 2024? Ohh.. of course it's because trade war chips tension that halt the development. But still.. optimistic on this is not wrong either IMO. Just because "it's far from" doesn't mean it cannot move fast..

I just found myself that C is the worst programming language as many people say, but the security and simplicity is more than any language in security. Thank you so much for this!
