that's exactly the type of person I'm trying to avoid by using reddit alternatives, let him stay over there

I'm honestly hoping the fediverse DOESN'T get as big as reddit because the quality of submissions and discussion will suffer

let's start our own c/place, with blackjack and hookers!

anytime I saw a thread on reddit with 1,000+ comments I didn't even bother to add my own view

I do like how pretty much any thread here on the fediverse is small enough that I feel like I can make a comment and participate

stack overflow is great if you want to be berated, given an irrelevant solution, and then have your question closed as a duplicate incorrectly

it’s crypto gambling stuff

my only issue with this is eventually people will hit a financial limit and only be able to support a few creators, leaving others without funding

I'm following over 30 youtube channels, even at $1/month per channel that would still be $30/month which is too much for me honestly. not to mention the fact I would have to manage 30 different subscriptions

I'd like a youtube premium style subscription where I can specify a group of channels and the money gets distributed to them only

this way my money isn't going to conspiracy channels, and I would only have a single subscription to manage

if you happen to have a desktop PC and you play while at home, sometimes remote play on the deck is better than installing a game on the deck

I can remote play Elden Ring from my desktop at 60fps with longer battery life vs 40fps if installed on the deck with worse battery life

also make sure you try out reduced TDP and GPU rates on games with simpler graphics, you can get an extra 1-2 hours of battery life and not impact performance in certain cases

just try to keep my head down and focus on what I can realistically influence

I bought the Hanson CD

but you know what, I ain’t ashamed! MMMbop was catchy and I’ll listen to whatever gets my body groovin’

hey don't kink shame!

I’m not sure if all of your points are covered, but this page has fediverse tips and an active mastodon account where you might be able to ask for the remaining scenarios to be covered

https://fedi.tips/

https://mstdn.social/@feditips

I only tip for sit-down restaurants where an actual servers brings me my food

everywhere else I preemptively give the stank face as I mash the 'no tip' button on their payment system

I usually just round up to the next $5 amount to make the numbers clean, don't really care what the % is

so a $16.83 bill gets a $3.17 tip

this makes it easier to plan a meal budget, like "ok I'm spending $20 on a burger and fries today"

I unchecked the 'Show Scores' option in settings (desktop site) and I enjoy the experience a lot

feels like old school forums where people just communicated instead of all this useless gamification

it seems to be an amalgamation of reddit and twitter

they have 'magazines' which are like subreddits, but magazines can designate hashtags which appear on the 'microblog' tab of a magazine and seem to pull in posts from other fediverse instances such as Mastodon

I'm still learning my way around but that is how I understand it

it’s funny because I was able to get a standup desk in my home office

I’m in better shape now than when I was sitting at the office (plus zero distractions from the cOlAbErAtIvE oPeN fLoOr pLaN)

Dark Souls 1-3

been waiting for these to go on sale for what feels like forever!

yep

I’ll take my lower salary to sit in my home office with central air

I wouldn’t last a day as a driver with their expectations and the need to move/lift heavy packages in the heat

hey its like our own little MTV Unplugged session :D

July 21st

sorry babe, Pikmin 4 comes out that day. I'm busy 😎

a million times this, so many young people overwork themselves and burn out quickly

I cringe whenever a see someone has checked in code at 1am on a weekend, and these people are also working normal business hours so it’s not like they are only working at night

sadly it’s usually the same people who never take PTO either

yeah it’s a shame that libertarian basically means closeted republican these days

is there a better term?

I’d consider myself pretty libertarian-minded in the whole ‘you live your life and I live mine’ style, but not in the ‘let corporations do whatever they want to workers and the environment’ style

man, so many old school internet references will go unnoticed on lemmy :(

holds up spork

2 more...

lmao that is embarrassing

sadly spez will still make millions from the IPO before he abandons ship, so I guess in the end he still 'wins' at the expense of the users

Name will essentially be the text after the c/ in the URL
Display Name allows extra text and will show when people browse using the Communities tab. Text in the Display Name is also searchable

example: I made a community called 'retronet'
that is the Name, which corresponds to this url: https://lemmy.sdf.org/c/retronet

the Display Name is 'retroNET - Vintage Culture/Websites/Software', which is what people see in the Community browser

I use Mozilla VPN, which I believe is just a rebranded Mullvad

never had any issues!

wow I just checked and all my deleted comments are restored (used the power delete suite)

jokes on them, I’m petty enough to sit here and manually delete everything

just ordered a nice OTA antenna so I can watch my local channels, anything else needed will be purchased for exactly 1 month and then cancelled

I've also started looking at smaller streaming services like CuriosityStream and MagellanTV cause I'm more interested in documentaries and such instead of the latest weekly tv dramas

remember dogetipbot?

well it's back, in shittier reddit form!

I gave up at the 'find a youtube video of an exact length' step

my laziness limit had been reached

I imagine "you" can't

you'd likely have to work for some marketing agency and can probably only buy user data in bulk amounts (based on region, or some other desired demographic) with a recurring business plan of course

it wouldn't be financially beneficial for these companies to sell an individual thumbprint

I just used Power Delete Suite to remove all my comments and submissions

https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite

I am just a drop in the ocean, but I won't be going back to reddit now that's I've discovered the fediverse

this feels like the internet I fell in love with back in the mid 90s with smaller communities and no corporations trying to control what I interact with

you can see the posts/comments per day on this site:

https://blackout.photon-reddit.com/

there was definitely a dip, but there seems to always be a dip on weekends and with it being a holiday in the US it is hard to say how much that is affecting usage

Wednesday should be the first 'normal' day since July 1st so I'll be interested to see how much it recovers

interacting with chatgpt is a learned skill

i’ve used it several times and while the initial code may have some issues you can get them cleared up with a few direct follow ups

1 more...

hmm, I guess the responsibility is partially on me to manually find/follow people from other instances to increase the cross-instance federation?

right now I am creating new accounts on all the different fediverse platforms so I can see which UI/UX I prefer, but I would like to eventually use only 1 or 2 accounts if possible

is there a github issue or list that describes specifically which moderation tools would be needed to deal with the kinds of issues that are appearing?

I just created my own community for the first time and as a new moderator I'd like to start learning more about the tools that are available, and which tools some more long-time mods feel are required to adequately run a community

I know part of the reddit outrage is over mod-tools, but I was never a mod over there so I'm oblivious to the sort of tasks that are routinely required (other than banning individuals)

I haven't looked at the specs but it is similar to UDP vs TCP?

been on Lemmy since the original blackout, haven't seen a single tiktok yet!

it was my own fault on reddit though, for some reason I used to browse r/all and it was always garbage, why did I do this myself?

the wet bandits strike again!
