Helping out with ARTEMIS!
Find more of my stuff [HERE].

I have created a few magazines to get settled here - if you want to contribute or take over as moderator, do let me know!

It is what it is, and it was expected. Curious to see what happens around the 30th, all we can do right now is throw it a downvote. I'm finally finding my footing around kbin so there's the silver lining.

I’m cautious, the remakes have been hit or miss. Zelda Link’s Awakening was well done but the frame rate was inexcusable. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl was a letdown… if anything we got the old one to emulate.

I long for a kbin iOS app like Apollo. One can dream.

"Can we have Elon?"
"We have Elon at home."

The primary thing with r/pics and its users is that they are creating/posting SFW quality content for free. They are an established platform with an audience, and the tradeoff is that the platform can be used for ads by its owner. This is all fair.

The main outrage against the blackout is now coming from people who usually scroll, upvote, and consume content. Not content creators. They cannot fathom that their source of entertainment is inaccessible and just want people to stop 'overreacting' and get back to scrolling.

What happens when the platform is no longer reliable, because the owner decided to upset the people making sure the quality remains as established? Sure, someone else will fill the gap, but with these actions I'm sure a lot content creators have flocked to other places. Which leaves the bots, and the lurkers. No content is worse than low quality content.

I'm curious for what the future brings for Reddit. It feels like it will have a different trajectory compared to Twitter, where anything is content and quality doesn't matter as much.

Are these the Backrooms of kbin?

I just posted a thread describing similar concerns. I only went for niche places such as 3d sculpting and emulation devices, but still it was nice to once in a while come across things outside of my bubble of interests.

What I mostly worry about is the bar of entry for the fediverse being too high for the casual user, the majority of which would fill such less niche boards with interesting and regular content. We live in a 'push button, get dopamine' era of content, and the fediverse seems more complicated than that.

I am glad to find you here, this is wonderful information to know. Hope you can find a new place to call home and indulge in retro gaming.

Joke aside, it may not be as popular as OW1 was, nor have as much of a dedicated fanbase. I personally haven't touched it since week one of OW2 because I was not enjoying myself like I used to, and felt scammed. I reckon plenty of others are of the same opinion.

It does feel more comfy, though only time will tell. It certainly is nice to at least have an alternative place to check out habitually.

First on the list. Sweet.

@ivanafterall they are now actively banning folks for using the pictures subreddit as intended? good grief.

I believe it is. Maybe someone should blow that whistle, see how Reddit would deal with an EU lawsuit at the time of the IPO.

I can read german and swedish, but don’t need those magazines to flood my feed either. I would love a filter like that.

I will say it is interesting to see how little time it took for users from those countries to have gathered here.

I adore this. I defaulted to old.reddit.com with an extension for good reason. I don't mind the way kbin looks but stuff like this might make the move over here easier for new users.

This bodes well for the quality of many subs: I’m sure turncoat figureheads will provide quality moderation. /s

It will take some time before I stop trying to refresh the front page habitually, but I like the variety of posts I've seen fly by on KBIN the past days. Had to filter out some german pages though.

I’m curious, could you explain why?

Edit: missed the reply button, this was meant as a question to a previous comment. See below.

@harmonea on top of that, it seems kbin's origins aren't as troublesome as Lemmy's.

Your last line is what I am trying to establish here, however I have noticed hostility from Lemmy supporters. This is what I mean with ‘as kbin users we should prevent this’. Such bad faith posting should be deflated or best nipped in the bud.

The points regarding kbin’s present state I do understand, but in that case I think it’s a matter of managing expectations for new users.

Ah, seems I misclicked. This was in response to @kadu because I personally prefer kbin over Lemmy for a variety of reasons. I do agree we should grow both rather than devolve into tribalism.

Guess those exclusivity rumors were just noise then, praise be.

It honestly depends (imo) what you expect a Final Fantasy game to be, maybe you could elaborate?

If you want an Old school rpg? Go for the pixel remasters on pc, or emulate. 1 and 2 are fairly open and unguided for example, but do establish some tropes and recurring themes.

Once you hit 3D era games the gameplay also changes with it. Some are more action based, others are more traditional.

The story however will always be a big part, with interesting takes on how to save a world. Some people find it convoluted however.

I mean, they are using Linux for the Steam Deck, right? Shows they're open to supporting non-standard platforms, and seeing their potential.

Every time. He can’t keep getting away with this.

If I recall correctly, the name /kbin originates from linux development, where /sbin relates to essential system binaries. When developing this platform, the term /kbin came from a joke between @ernest and friends. I believe it also refers to a Karabin, a Polish rifle. Ernest is Polish.

The lemmy devs tried denying it in an update, and then someone brought the receipts. I really do not want to support those devs.

QRD on Calckey and Misskey? I'm afraid I missed that whole conversation.

Tribalism is a big issue in the social media space, and I hoped the whole 'connected platforms' thing would kind of alleviate that. Still, everyone wants to be part of the 'winning' team, and folks are less likely to socially invest in a platform without good reason.

As stated, I am glad kbin denotes instance origins. Some folks are just too set in the 'my team has to win' mindset, and will dismiss or disrupt any other information received from elsewhere.

They behaved as if discussions of other Fedivese microblogs themselves were some sort of existential threat to the Fediverse.

The web keeps evolving, and honestly in the end usability and accessibility will be key. We're waiting for a project that can lower the bar for the 'common' user who wants to click a button and yell into the void. Probably Meta's intended audience. I expect that this future project will in turn become more of a containment zone than an actual place for discussion, but hey at least the folks who want more than Twitter/Reddit 2.0 will have an entry point to the rest of the fediverse without having to deal with the semantics of it.

Incidentally, where in kbin does it show what type of service other users are using?

Ah, I meant the hostname, not the specific type/kind of instance. Still, to at least be able to differentiate on source rather than claiming everything as its own content, is something I do appreciate. It would either teach me to ignore or value certain contributions more or less, given their origins - i.e. an instance ran by propaganda machines or big business.

a weird name for masses to adapt

Reddit made sense. 'Read it'. Digg? I 'dig' that. 'Lemmy' look at the meme. Even TikTok is a decent name for a social media platform.
Most folks here are tech savvy and don't mind the kbin name, but I don't expect some of my friends to 'get' it. Which is not inherently a bad thing, because it also prevents engagement from certain types of user who are looking for the next place to spam.

was replying from mobile - so I'd like to add here... Great work on the texturing! The materials really look like their real life counterparts, perhaps even a bit more edible than supposed to. Which is a good thing.

I agree on this, too. Kbin is a weird name for masses to adapt, for example. We're back in the Wild West regarding this form of social media, and the result of that will hopefully be innovation and reiteration of established standards.

Hard agree on the American soft power, too. I was surprised there were so many German instances on the fediverse already. I don't really want to interact with Dutch posts though, so if those pop up that's a hard filter from me.

With eyes on the future of the fediverse, I would prefer not ending up with another Facebook-like situation where 'one place' is the 'default' place - where the 'default' place is run by people less trustworthy than Mark Zuckerberg.

These look great! Just the right amount of detail.
I have created @3dmodeling and @zbrush here, so if you’re interested in sharing these there too I’d personally love that!
