McDonald’s used to be viable because it was shit, but at least it was cheap. Now it’s just shit. I haven’t gone of my own will in years, only with other people who wanted it. $3 for a hash brown is absurd.

Insurance impedes fucking everything here

Absolutely it is, see Nelson Mandela for instance

My mother in law came over yesterday to share some of the stew she made with ingredients from the food bank. I was so grateful that I got a day this week where I didn’t have to pay for food. This shit is not helping anyone.

I agree that this is less the case of a rogue chat bot losing it at undeserving customers, and more the case of someone who knows how to twist an LLM to do what they want it to do, but still an absolute embarrassment for DPD. What other nonsense was it writing to different customers who really didn’t know better?

Paying rent instead of a mortgage.

To expand on this from a different perspective, I’m not a game developer, I have an analytics background. A mobile game company popped up on my Indeed feed not too long ago, looking to fill what basically amounted to a position whose sole goal was to make their games as addictive as possible. I’m not saying that those kinds of roles don’t exist in more traditional game development, but it seems par for the course with mobile gaming.

For real. I moved recently, and tried one of the best rated dispensaries in the area. The place legitimately had a bouncer and all the other staff were in lab coats. Felt like buying in a forensics lab, shit was unnerving

The worst. Our IT is outsourced to some bottom-of-the-barrel garbage company, and they both have no idea what they are doing and work in a different timezone, so you have to wait a working day for responses like ‘did you try turning it off and on again?’. Everyone just emails the head of IT with their issues, which defeats the whole point of the system.

Due to visa complications I haven’t been home to see my family since I moved continents five years ago. I had no idea when I left that I would never see my dog or the only home that I had ever known ever again.

I’m extremely concerned that I’m also pining for a place that doesn’t exist any more.

I bet Tommy’s mother is very proud

A family friend’s pitbull chewed the ear off of someone’s toddler because it wanted to play with him. The best way to deal with a dangerous dog you don’t own is to ignore it and have the owners deal with it. The last thing you want is the dog liking you more than its owners, spending more time in your yard, then deciding to ‘play’ with the ducks.

Bro is fighting ghosts

I got ‘hired’ on at my current job as a non-employee temp worker with no health insurance or sick days, as it was the only kind of role I could get remotely related to my field since I was a fresh immigrant here in the US. My boss fought tooth and nail for me to get hired full-time with a 30% raise and our amazing health benefits. Now just 6 months later, she’s petitioning her boss to give me a promotion when I feel like I just got here, and would have happily spent the next year or two learning before trying to move around. I owe a lot to her for giving me a chance when nowhere else would.

Using the same game mechanics as a billion dollar company = denying the existence of transgender people

I think this comment sums up why a lot of studios don’t avoid spoiling major plot points in trailers. It’s very easy to advertise a movie as something it isn’t (or just the opening third), and miss the core audience that will actually leave good reviews on it, convincing others to go.

A movie that did a great job of getting across what it was in the trailer, but still throwing a massive curveball, was Barbarian, which I really appreciate it for. Almost every plot point was subversive, though partially because it was such a strange film.

Banana milk! 1 ripe banana, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup water, 1 tbsp maple syrup, a few drops of vanilla extract, blend and pour through a sieve over ice. So refreshing and very cheap.

I don’t know how others are, but my HSA covers catch-all ‘birth control’. If you can reasonably justify it as birth control, they just accept it. Yes, that includes condoms too.

lemmy.blahaj.zone sounds like a good fit for you. It’s an instance predominately set up as a refuge for trans people, but accepts anyone respectful. The admins defederate from anything offensive which keeps it a safe place for people who need it. I’m not trans but basically signed up here because I feel the same as you, I come here to unwind before bed and want to avoid inflammatory shit. It’s a great little community.

I use Copilot fully integrated with Office 365 in my work, and was one of the beta testers back in November. Anecdotally, it’s no better than any other LLM, and I have found hallucinates significantly more than ChatGPT. The Office integration is useful and I do use it more than any other AI tool for its convenience being ‘inside’ of Excel / Outlook etc, but you aren’t missing much by not having it.

I spotted Tom Hardy rushing through a London train a few years ago. I gave him a nod and he gave me the ‘don’t tell anyone I’m here’ look. My Mum was next to me and pretty upset she didn’t notice him, because she thinks he’s a pretty handsome guy!

I currently work at a business that uses a similar method to the probationary period, and I hate it. It’s definitely one of those things that sounds good on paper, but in practice I would love to move away from.

We use a proprietary system in my field, and train a couple of members of each department to be able to submit stuff into it (think Concur / NetSuite). It takes about three months to become proficient enough that I don’t have some form of issue with everything you submit. This means I can spend months training someone, just for them to be let go and the next person roll in.

Training people is expensive in both cash for the business and the time of those around them. Hiring correctly once would make my life a lot easier.

Please don’t, there are enough paranoid nutjobs on Lemmy as it is

The good: I just signed a new lease in a city I have always wanted to live in, so it’s moving time

The bad: I hit an enormous raccoon which cracked my bumper and have to take my car in for repairs today on my lunch break

I feel like, depending on your age at the time, this is more on her than you. I’m an adult, and I don’t buy myself clothes that can’t handle the normal setting on my washer and dryer. I know it would be a case of when, not if, I’d forget. No way I’d trust a child to pay attention to something like that.

I have free Copilot through work and it is something I use very infrequently. It scarcely can do anything that I can’t do faster and more accurately.
