Yep - best option is to defederate them well before they gain traction & start creating problem by not contributing back to the protocol in a way that benefits everyone.

I think after the community got burned by Microsoft & then google we’re finally learning.

Oh get out of here w/ that. It’s not bad as much as it’s just stupid - it’s literally a top down approach to social media. Fb & instagram have already made it big so of course they can launch & pull whatever bs they want.

It wasn’t organic & they hadn’t built anything w/ true merit & people are still tired of Zuck. He’s marginally better than musk these days at best. And maybe people aren’t as crazy about celebs & influencers wanting to be seen & heard as we all thought - as that’s not social media - that’s a Coca-cola commercial.

Makes me less sympathetic for her. Her having kids though & being part of that MAGA culture is VERY concerning though. But you know.. there are lots of men & women that don’t think too deeply about politics & many that don’t share their spouses politics as well. It surprises me - but I honestly don’t think someone wakes up crazy one day.

Also spouses that get surprised later most likely didn’t know because they were too afraid to ask &/or probe into meaningful & telling areas for one reason or another. And many just go along to get along, & I hate that as I couldn’t be attracted to anyone w/ shitty political beliefs & I feel like others should do the same so us that care aren’t stuck looking for partners or a partner unknowingly being w/ a crazy person.

Pretty sure the best thing we can do w/ third-world assholes like him is ignore him. Don't talk about it, don't repost, don't engage w/ his supporters - just shutdown the conversation when his name is mentioned. Only reason he has a following is because of his supporters loving to get re-actions from people.

Don't give it to them.

Why was it linking to web archive instead of the source?

Tbh it’s far more likely they’ll implement extensions to activitypub that are specific only to threads & make activitypub users want them - but can’t have them - this peeling off users for them vs a slower moving, free & collaborative platform.

Imho to avoid a Google loves XMPP (they pretty well killed it) situation ActivityPub servers need to largely block Threads completely or face being extinguished in much the same way as XMPP. Don’t give them a foothold & don’t trust that a private entity like Meta will play nice, they aren’t joining to be a peer, they’re joining to either take it over or kill the competition.

Tbh I would rather browse flickr or dpreview when that was a thing than to jump on instagram. Never been on it - but seeing the stuff an ex would post and others I always found it offputting. I am sure it had good pictures on it at one point, but that was so long ago I never had an opportunity to experience it. I assume it was good before facebook bought them.

If lol? I think it is obvious that they will already - at least for anything tech or dev related for sure and that will be enough to sustain it because obviously those same people have other interests as well, and will attract gamers and the rest. It may take time for the Vinn diagrams to all align with each other but the rest will come eventually.

How reddit itself formed.. tech the tech centric audience from Digg and slowly everyone came along with them - even if they didn't like the transition initially. Reddit has literally committed suicide whether spez realizes it or not. I think obviously people like Mark Zuckerberg and the guy ahead of twitter - pre-elon saw it coming, why bluesky exists and why Facebook wants to join as well before they become irrelevant.

Spez is a fool who can't see past his own nose and just wants to cash out by IPO'ing - but the thing is he's both too late and mishandled the IPO already. He will get the absolute smallest pay day of all the platforms that have gone public in any way imho. I am sure he'll make out fine still, but it will be a small pittance that it could have been had he shown an ounce of respect for the reddit community.

Oh look trash looking like trash.

I do - I’ve both seen & heard some shit first & second hand. I’m guessing she fell into some extremist Pentecostal groups as they both speak in tongue & handle snakes.

Also areas full of Christian’s like that can really wrap the minds of people you’d think would know better. To this day I’m still bothered by how my area ruined the lives of 2 artists that I was convinced were going to go on to do great things. I fully blame the area they grew up in, so much talent squandered - literally any where else their talents would have got noticed & no telling how much better their lives would have been.

Tbh - some of us, like me, did leave our most valuable comments to the tech community behind. Whether it helps reddit or not I still posted things to help others. I did delete much of anything outside of very tech related subreddits though. Also I promoted some software I wrote when applicable so it would only cut off my own nose to try and spite Spez too, so no I would rather not do that.

Reddit will die a slow death I am sure, but the heart of reddit is certainly gone.

What lol? They never owned the internet, more like the users loaned them their attention for years - till they really screw up which they’ve been doing as of late.

I have nothing against coming down on companies that try & do anti-competitive things & pulling an API via ridiculous pricing is one of those things I feel the FTC should have the power to intervene in but I know conservatives would scream government over reach. They already do with both smaller & bigger things.

Regardless kbin, mastodon & Fediverse are all strong responses to what’s been going on & sadly they all need to avoid inter connectivity w/ these behemoths to ensure they don’t try underhanded tactics to destroy it, ironically. Maybe when/if they get to be of similar sizes & the momentum is too great for them to destroy a competitor then connectivity btwn the 2 can be done but till then it’s not safe imho.

Just goes to show everyone that wealth =/= intelligence and while I feel sorry for the rest of the people and their families in there - I do think that if anyone should have died in that mess it was the CEO himself & certainly not some random tourist that he couldn't have cared less about besides their money and those tourist dollars.

Sorry but Fritos of software is dumb & in no way representative of bringing old chromebooks back to life beyond their support date.

Schools often buy the bottom baseline of everything & in now way was a 4gb of ram a good, decent or proper experience to begin w/ & their replacements probably also had 4gb of ram - just a faster cpu, gpu & ram to hide that it’s lacking ram still.

I think schools could easily band together & make their own education focused Linux distro & then just focus on hardware that’s compatible w/ that’s Chromebooks or Windows laptops. Hard part would be building out an on par MDM &/or ldap server if not using a Windows server.

All Chromebook are is a browser basically. It already is the bag of Fritos imho. I think the hard part though would be to hire an IT guy that knows Linux better than the students tbh. Schools already under pay teachers in the US & that goes 2-3x for IT staff.

My question is.. has the reason RHEL and centos been as popular as it has been simply because of a 10 yr enterprise support term this entire time or something else?

I get Ubuntu Server only lasts for 5yr - unless you go spend for the extended support.. but was 5yr LTS from ubuntu server really that make it or break it for people setting up solutions for companies? I feel like the upgrade path is also pretty painless on a 4-5yr cycle as well most of the time. I get it would be even nicer to set something and forget it for a decade - but reality is the 10yr term could be anywhere along the line, not like a new release was happening every year or 2 I doubt. I mean LTS does have that sorta overlap every couple of years so I guess maybe so did centos and RHEL, but still.

Tools are often built of specific and older versions still as well and with containerization being what it is now.. I feel like Redhats big advantage of 10yr support periods is kind of diminished from what it was in the 90's or early 2000's.

Yes - we’re causing climate change but El Niño isn’t helping so I wouldn’t pretend like every year will be worse than this one - but yea it can be on the larger time scale should we not tackle climate change.

It could if the will was there. We’re able to run water & electricity - but we can’t figure out how to run a strand of glass or 1 new piece of copper? It’s called greed, laziness, ineptitude & creative companies & their lawyers which took tax payer money without delivering the services they promised year over year.

Tbh the git app or protocol makes it so easy to get up and relocate.. and programmers in general are probably some of the most capable users of relocating that even if it were to happen many of them wouldn't care that much. It's a good portfolio site and decent for collaboration of many projects. Doesn't currently get in the way and provides good or better visibility for projects than gitlab or bitbucket. Till the visibility issue is resolved better by a competitor that offers something significantly better or github makes disastrous decisions then people will be happy at github. Regardless I don't think there would be much drama around moving homes if that day ever comes.

And that is dumb. Companies with any sense will veer to debian and distros that are going to be open with their own contributions because gasp - you can write code, put it out under gpl v2 or a permissive license and make money on the support contracts like they were doing.

From the best I can tell mine has been staying deleted, although some keywords I thought I completely removed seemed to have still had some hits later, but not many. Hopefully most of what is left is just gibberish at this point. I meant to fully delete those, but oh well. I think it might make it easier for them to do roll backs when things are tagged with redact in the message sadly. I do just want to be done with it though.

Sarcasm lost on the internet, that never happens.

What I find interesting is that they basically ripped off The New Adventures of Johnny Quest imho making Ready Player One the more I think about it.

Why not just ask them to remove the self identification and leave it at that? You don't have to say you or they got anything wrong - just that you do not want that on your file. I feel like that would be the better option and avoid any possibility of termination later for them claiming you lied to them.

Might win me back over if the weird green lines and glitching I always see with chrome on intel GPUs under linux goes away. I've also spent a lot of time trying to debug the issue but nothing ever seems to fix it and of course none of the Linux driver devs that might be able to fix it care to work on the problem imo.

Guess I have felt lucky to have hardware decoding at all on chrome - considering the it has taken Firefox this long to support intel GPUs. I imagine it has something to do with how massive their codebase is compared to everyone elses.

Better way to say it imo, is that you have the extremist on the right expanding at a faster clip than the left. And most people do want to be moderate, they want to believe the middle road is justified & yet it puts them solidly conservative w/o them realizing it.

It sucks it does imo & if I saw equal reactions on the left then I’d call it out but I don’t.

Many of them still act as apologists for some pretty despicable ideas & groups nonetheless.
