I'm doing the maths and if you create the next flappy bird and it goes viral and gets 50 million downloads in a month, you'd owe unity $10 million dollars before you'd even received your first monetization cheque (you did launch with a full monetization plan, right? right? oh.)

edit: i forgot they had moneitzation limits too, so no - this situation wouldn't quite happen until they earned $200,000 in revenue. Though the potential to go viral and find yourself underwater because of the massive unity bill in comparison to your income is still a possibility

i bought my house at the top (two years ago) and no regrets. less about it being an investment and more about having a stable place to call my own that gives me safety and not at the whims of a landlord. i’d quite like it if house prices became more affordable for everyone, the counter intuitive thing to say. 🤷‍♂️ i was supposed to become a nimby and vote conservative but now i’m more left wing than ever.

i’m thrilled to see that the donations are letting this be somewhat self sustaining. obviously a lot of unpaid volunteering going into this so not quite a self sustaining non profit, but it’s got all the promising signs

I have a mouse that happens to have two extra buttons off to the side and mapping those to 'copy' and 'paste' has been the best thing i've ever done for my productivity. Also mapping middle mouse button to 'screenshot to clipboard' but that's just a personal thing i happen to do a lot

depends on your platform and your level of experience. Both unreal and godot have steep learning curves depending on where you come from. GDevelop is very accessible but also caps out quite fast. Great for making prototypes and getting simple games out there but depending on your level of ambition you will probably outgrow it sooner or later.

i contribute to patreons of lemmy.world and the developers of lemmy. hopefully there’s makes enough of us to make this financially viable

this. oh god this sums it up so well. any platform that features a “feed” and the company offer to “personalise” it for you - that’s where enshittification will occur.

probably an unpopular opinion but facebook does also have a sort of track record of contributing to open source projects in ways that benefit everyone. facebook wanted to use subversion (or some other non-git source control) and contributed significantly so that it would work great for huge repositories like theirs. and facebook use memcached for their caches and contribute heavily so that they can use it more efficiently.

i’m also skeptical about end motivations, but in terms of being able to lend engineering effort to open source projects and helping to create a better product for all, it’s not such a bad idea.

what i fear is that reddit will take completely unnecessary but effective potshots at the fediverse and take down instances or fill them with bots just to punish those who made a point of leaving.

i don't use twitter anyway, so my plan is to enjoy this virtual boxing match between musk and zuckerberg until they actually follow through on their real punchup.

i personally see them as different tools of the same end goal - wealth generation in a checked and sustainable manner. capitalist environments inspire innovation, but require boundaries set (regulators) and a political environment which is alert and aware of exploitation and can make the calls about what is or is not acceptable.

by default my computer interprets them as forward and back but i've got to be honest, it doesn't do it for me 😂

i hear you, but there's a difference between letting kids develop into adults and supporting students who trespass. You don't just get to break laws because you're a student and your school should support you to develop.

protesting has rules and boundaries. you are allowed to organise and protest within those, and going outside of that is usually a civil office (like trespass) or a criminal one depending on what goes on. These students are likely committing trespass.

just being a student doesn't give you permission to use college campuses as you want. if you break rules or laws, there's consequences for that. if you believe that what you stand for is the most important thing, then you accept the consequences as a feature of what you're campaigning for. If you don't, then your heart isn't really in it and you just want to do whatever you want and get away with it because you feel like that's what you deserve.

it’s not even about suing - i was reading the instance owners post about the version upgrade and it struck me that’s truly just down to random volunteers to work out tech issues. debugging malicious actions of a bigger team is just unfair.
