LTS means security fixes, but little else if any. good luck if you need a feature that came out a year ago it's not in the repo yet

it hasn't been a problem lately, but for basically an entire year I was helping first timers through getting a more recent lutris for games because the one mint shipped was ancient and broken and on top of that the 32 bit wine dependencies were practically impossible to resolve for some games

yep, and then they got rid of the ppa and people had to fall back to the deb

if every instance of dolphin UI doesn't lock up when I'm doing file operations across NFS that sure would be nice

the deck isn't some server that needs > 100% uptime for years. Debian is poopoo for bleeding edge game releases, especially any alpha/beta/early access stuff

federated identity good, centralized identity maybe not so good

Nice

year of the Linux desktop before gimp 3

it's like, literally one step, I just gave it permission to one directory and the it themed my qt and gtk apps. I wish it was on by default from my distro

EasyCheat strikes again

those warnings on mint and flathub are so ridiculous, there's no difference between those and official ones, somebody could just as easily put something nefarious in any flatpak

nix is like the i3 of package managers. does it work sure but you'll spend your 80% of your time learning code and configuration to make your sick packaging rice /sarcasm

I like running mesa git for a few specific games but I have zero desire to install it for my system so I install it to /opt and invoke the right environment variable to use it from there instead

not necessarily about the language, but things periodically getting rewritten or re-implemented is a useful exercise. it's a moment for reflection and analysis of the structures and systems as a whole

missing a mountain of accessibility tools

whenever somebody brings up some terribly ancient Debian/buntu distro with outdated packages we end up having them use a .deb instead since the ppa is long gone and it's been fine. wild that they're often stuck on 4 year old packages though

what is the actual use case of LTS on regular desktop non-workstation anyway?

for what it's worth the pulsaudio APIs aren't going anywhere anytime soon. keeping an eye on the replies out of curiosity though

tbh I just assume that despite GDPR or CCPA any images I put up are there forever, it's not like the tech is that different in the fediverse from anywhere else. nowhere is going to be scrubbing their storage drive blocks on delete if it even can be deleted

bootloaders should always be packaged with a pacman hook

looking forward to trying wineland someday. got some weird cursor snapping issues on Wayland for now that need gamescope to work around on some games

oof not sure about that, partial upgrade can be a doozy

windows can and will destroy your bootloader at least once, show it no mercy

yt creators really don't have a choice, if they deviate from the stuff that the algorithm likes it kills the channel

snaps heh

my system sets the wrong bitrate for a device but I was able to configure it, you may want to browse the wireplumber wiki and see if its config options can meet your use case

endeavoros has a major pitfall for new users that it has no default hooks to update bootloader, so to the uninitiated it will soon eventually "brick" itself (when grub changes it's config syntax or whatever)

very happy with my pangolin, at some point I need to dig up the documentation and find out if I can fix a key or not but overall great hardware

big fan of qpwgraph

it's my preference for proprietary apps

like wine patch notes, often someone reports that an old bug on a very old product seems to have gone away at some point so it gets reported as fixed, even if it's not something that had to be specifically looked at by anybody
