DDG has a built-in option to determine whether you want to see ads or not.

And the money won't go to Firefox, but Mozilla's other projects.

Got affected by this, and the Edge literally showed a notification bar on how to disable this (as a user). So, slightly annoying but not too big of an issue as users can opt out right away.

Could be a library or feature that the devs didn't consider worth maintaining on older devices.

For context, the OP appears to be using Android 5 or 5.1, released in 2014/2015 respectively and is used on 1.1-1.3% devices worldwide.

Remember that all apps need to target the almost-latest target API at least. That means Android 13 for all new apps and app updates since Aug 31.

Draw a straight line with GIMP.

Pencil tool, point 1, hold shift, point 2. Is it any easier in Photoshop?

Edit: yes, apparently there is a line tool in Photoshop.

The parent may then be asked to consent to a scan of their face using a front-facing camera, which is then used to "accurately estimate the parent's age."

the only piece of information that is communicated to the company requesting [Verifiable Parental Consent] is a 'Yes' or 'No' determination as to whether the person is over the age of 25.

So that's settled, people under the age of 25 can no longer have children.

The issue is that they required websites to implement the banner, instead of just implementing a standard (like this one) and letting browsers handle the UI. Imagine just telling your browser once what kind of cookies you are okay with and all websites adhere...

Remove banners, just make the companies respect the browser setting.

Seems like it will fulfill its purpose then - to protect said teenager's data.

With manifest v2, extensions could block the content however they wanted, reading and modifying DOM as they see fit.

Google claims that it is a security risk, so with manifest v3, extensions can only create and give the browser rules and the browser itself will block content based on them. The rules have a limit in size and capabilities.

If that was still not clear, try thinking of unrestricted SQL access vs a UI for modifying a database.

How does it differ from buying a laptop at this point? The price is the same, the capabilities are similar, the form factor can be the same (Fold or tablets in general).

As long as the hardware can keep up with the software, and the manufacturer keeps building products, why should they ever end support? (a la Windows)

ChatGPT itself doesn't know where it got the info from, so it makes up links and names - it's a language model, not a search engine.

On the other hand, if you manage to find a reputable source and give it relevant metadata, it can format a nice citation for you, saving you time on that instead.

Vivaldi and Brave are planning to extend the deadline of MV2 by some extent, not sure if it means just like the enterprise policy or will they keep the implementation in code for longer.

Is it durable just because it's thick, or can we use this tech in mobile screens too?

For real though, how could AI be used to enhance browsing?

Well, in the 90-00s search engines were taught to be used with keywords. Then Google started to make it work with sentences and speech as well. Now AI is supposedly* answering complex questions and getting organized data for you.

  • as long as the data is factual, which depends on your question, language model and availability of answers

I personally think it would be good if people had access to AI the same way search engines exist, but most AIs are still locked down to an account or payment, mainly for accountability and marketability purposes I'd say.

Yes, it blocks ads, and likely the YouTube ones too. The current problem with YouTube is just their anti-adblocker which needs very frequent filter updates and unlike MV2, filter updates in MV3 need the update of the entire extension (think approval periods etc).

Ironically, it got popular when it still tried to get users to subscribe to a monthly payment. And as it was one of the few messaging platforms to be (in the future) paid at all, I cannot understand why it ever got popular...

Well, sure, Meta cancelled the subscription plans later but to me it sounded a red flag in the first place.

Outside Chrome, the answer is that the extension support is a very big and fragile (hard to maintain) patch for Chromium.

Here's a list of browsers with extensions:

  • Kiwi and Yandex browser support most Chrome extensions
  • Firefox, Mozilla's Reference Browser and Firefox forks support most Firefox extensions, but you need to make a "collection" if you want more variety than the default list
  • Samsung Internet supports some content blockers as app-based extensions
  • SmartCookieWeb, Berry Browser, Sleipnir support userscripts
  • Many other browsers also have some form of tracker and/or ad blocking

You probably just have to change your region to any EEA country, such as Ireland.

Well, true. But it is more reasonable to hate the manufacturer who refused to update, not the app devs who would have to do more work for small gain. Or unofficially update your own device, if possible.

What exactly is the great advantage of eSIMs if you have a dual SIM phone?!

If the phone supports a normal and eSIM at the same time, they are equivalent. Because in many countries, dual SIM phones are (and will be) harder to get than single SIM ones, so having eSIM at least allows that.

Well, Firefox also plans to deprecate MV2 at some point (deadline to be announced at the end of this year), the difference is just that their implementation of MV3 is more flexible at the points Chrome was criticized for.

In my experience, several devices don't display the emoji as a correct icon (instead show the rectangle "tofu"), but they still work with it.

Maybe because shorts are short and un-seekable, so more "engagement".

YouTube clients like NewPipe.

Menu -> Settings -> Tracker and Ad Blocking -> Block Trackers and Ads

Wait... YouTube Kids has ads without Premium?! I would've hoped they'd keep the ads away from kids at least.

I don't think it is "forced", just the new default (unless explicitly disabled in a view), which is nice to see. Additionally, I didn't see much relevance to Play Store - it seemed to be a system-level thing.

Well, do you see it happening on Android for any major app except Fortnite?

IIRC their point was that SMS is insecure, so they don't want people using SMS in Signal to think that this is Signal. With RCS, they could do what Apple will - be interoperable while providing extras with own platform (iMessage).

Admittedly, that doesn't sound like enough reason to reimplement SMS and RCS alone would still be kind of inconvenient.

It's still exciting if you're looking for a specific upgrade.

Opera is still used by 2.86% of the world, while Netscape probably has less than 100 users.

Odd. The app is called "App Ops - permission manager".

But... they could've already done that with current tools? Not like these change the package ID often.

Who knows what skeletons are still hiding?

Go and have a look? https://github.com/brave/brave-browser

My argument is that Brave is a Chromium browser with questionable business goals, but it is also the most private and secure, open-source, mainstream* Chromium browser. These keywords cannot be said about Vivaldi, Ungoogled Chromium and many other projects unfortunately.

That said, I primarily use Vivaldi because of its customizability and added features, something Firefox seems to reduce with every new version.

  • Not quite on Edge or Opera level, and no accurate data can be found due to the removal of unique user agent, but nonetheless I'd argue it is more popular than others of similar kind.
