It's crazy to me that this got 61 upvotes while the main concern here, that 30,000 unrelated people had their data handed over to the government, is just an aside in point 1.

It really concerns me that people think any of this reasonable. If this is "reasonable" then there's nothing stopping cops from getting all of our data, whenever they want it. All they have to do is find one suspect who watched one video.

That's fucking crazy and clearly unreasonable. Take my downvote for having an exceptionally bad opinion on this topic.

Elon is the Desert Bus of CEOs

Isn't that what the person you replied just said?

Well yeah, what did you expect? The fediverse is brand new while goodreads is at least 15 years old (without looking it up). I have people from high school on my friends list there and I’m in my late 30s.

It goes without saying that they have more users and therefore more reviews. That stuff doesn’t happen overnight.

They didn't say that though? The last paragraph made it clear (to me) that they were saying the end result isn't the only part of at that makes it impressive, but also the effort/skill involved

That isn’t what polling shows.

Why would you make up a reason to justify the government seizing people's data? Like damn I thought lemmy cared about privacy but this thread is wild with some of the comments I'm reading.

They were videos about using drones and AR to create maps. There's nothing illegal about that.

You do realize that you can like iPhones and Apple products while recognizing that a lot of Apple's business practices seriously hurt consumers, right?

I also don't think they'll lose. They have a ton of evidence of intentionally anti-competitive behavior from Apple.

Literal malware techniques. MS learned well from all the viruses that infected Windows in the 2000s

So let the other heads see what happens when you fuck around too much.

There is a microwave technique for drying weed if you want to smoke it quickly. It will taste extremely green though. There’s nothing you can do to replace a good cure.

They can appeal all they want, but that doesn't mean that courts will automatically stop enforcement actions.

Steam numbers are completely meaningless. There’s absolutely no way SteamOS outnumbers Ubuntu even if we limit this comparison to desktop installs. Ubuntu’s been around for a very long time and many of its users wouldn’t show up on Steam because they don’t game.

I don't understand the issue. Why can't they just call the Android API when the user wants to view their weather? I'm just not buying that this would be so costly to the battery life that it would be unusable.

I am buying that apple wants to keep their walled garden and they're making up excuses to do so

And the linked Bloomberg article straight up says they cancelled the project because the Apple Watch drives iPhone sales, lol.

Never buying a Roku product ever again. Their TVs used to be a good deal but I’ll play a premium for something else next time.

lol, literally just making stuff up. Their number of active users dropped by 15-20% since Elmo took over: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/mar/26/twitter-usage-in-us-fallen-by-a-fifth-since-elon-musks-takeover

Only a Java dev would write that abomination

So many people worshipped this fucking asshole for decades. All it takes to impress a large number of Americans is a couple of cruel quips.

Convenient protests don’t do shit. They get ignored, and often not reported on at all.

People said exactly the same thing you’re saying about the civil rights movement. Which was much more disruptive than the schoolbooks teach.

The first time ever? Why do liberals constantly lie and exaggerate? No one with a brain believes you. Obama leaned away from Israel by actually blowing them off, Biden scolding Netanyahu a couple times while proceeding to give him billions in aid isn’t leaning away from shit.

Nah this is just an epidemic of lazy people who want the credit of being called an artist without putting in any of the work.

The equivalent of MLK Day is Presidents’ Day. I’m not even sure what you mean by European holidays, Halloween? I would not consider Christian holidays like Easter or Christmas to be white holidays and can’t think of anything else that qualifies as “European”

The U.S. isn’t funding the Sudanese military junta or the foreign fighters, that’s such a ridiculous counterpoint to try to make.

Most of them don't already. They just don't report cash tips on their taxes. This was a cheap way for Trump to gain votes, so Harris went along with it.

The act of retaliation is the part that's a felony dude, not banning someone's apple id.

They don’t give a shit because the genocide is already in progress. Also these people are very real, real enough to make an impact on the primaries. You liberals really just can’t help but constantly condescend to anyone who doesn’t do what you want them to.

It’s hilarious watching liberals try to blame their campaign failures on “Russian bots”. It’s always someone else’s fault

Most of rural America wasn’t served at all, you had to travel to a town with a train station. For smaller towns, no lines were ever built. It’s a completely unrealistic idea. It also doesn’t address the issue of local transport.

Catholicism requires penance for sins, but not government intervention. I think that’s as close as it gets

Fair enough. There's really no reason to not be cautious with any company, especially startups, so I can see where you're coming from. I guess I'm just glad to see someone else seeing market value in gaming on Linux.

Yeah ngl Ubuntu is so much easier to get up and running than other distros. It’s fast and reasonably up to date. I will say I’ve found the LTS version to be disappointingly buggy compared to other long term releases like Debian and Leap, but nothing that would motivate me to move to another distro. Just annoying audio related bugs that are easy to fix or get around.

Leap was so solid I wished I could’ve stayed with it, but I didn’t want to commit to a distro with an uncertain future.

Expectations are a lot different for high schoolers than adults in their 20s. I absolutely got rejected quite a bit in my 20s for living with my parents. Not by everyone but it was common. My 20s mostly came after the 2008 collapse, coincidentally or not.

This is in the US by the way and I’m sure it’s a cultural thing. In many countries, living with your parents until you’re financially stable or married is normal.

They vetoing it because the US proposed a conditional ceasefire while Russia and China want an immediate unconditional ceasefire.

So I read about it on Wikipedia and apparently they’re still the main navigation tool for modern airliners. GPS is just used to maintain the accuracy of the INS.

Nah fuck the entire node ecosystem. It’s proof of how bad people have become at software design. Especially web devs. It’s crazy to me how many devs introduce breaking changes because of their “philosophy” or because the original design was straight up terrible.

It's so much better than it used to be though. There's been a lot of real progress and there's more interest than ever in creating a viable Linux consumer-grade desktop among foss developers and even corporations.

I'll grant you it's definitely not there yet for non-techies. But I do think we'll get there eventually and I wouldn't have said that 5 years ago.

They also created TypeScript which is a huge improvement over js imo. And with C# you can use Mono, so you really aren’t locked into MS automatically.

Plus, they made VS Code free. I hate MS but they do make solid tools for developers.

Might have to break out the ole INS
