Great and all, but this is a literal press release. It could be PR spruiking, it could be pump’n’dump play, it could be friggin genuinely great. No way to know from a press release.

It’s an extraordinary move, but I think they’re spot on. It’s a huge amount of money to spend on a sporting even for a few weeks when Victoria is in a real cost-of-living crisis. There are much more pressing priorities for regional Victoria than a legacy of some upgraded sports venues.

This is one area where Apple has it pretty right. A Mac will do somethings when ‘asleep’ like download emails and texts. It also can broadcast its location if the ‘Find Me’ function is on. If it’s plugged into power then backups will also run, and background app updates will happen. It does this in a low power mode, so it won’t get hot enough to need fans. It’s worked flawlessly for 20 years. Meanwhile all our PCs are set to ‘never sleep’ and just get shutdown when not in use. I never trust a PC laptop to wake successfully from sleep just by closing the lid.

Well, they were significantly more secure by default than Windows due to various design measures including the separation of user land. And old OS9 was friggin brilliant for a web facing machine back in the day.

Weird take, what’s your beef? They most certainly do slap on huge fines, and are much more aggressive about enforcing privacy requirements than the US/etal.

The whole premise of ads on Twitter is that they’re targeted.

IBM don’t sell consumer crap. They sell smoke and mirrors to major governments and industry. They’re chasing jobs worth millions per pop. They want ads to target the people making those decisions.

Well my anecdote is that every single micro USB device I have has either a stuffed port or stuffs the cable. Those things are so incredibly flimsy.

In places where this has been studied extensively renewables with storage are still the cheapest by a long way. Australia has the whole state of South Australia (plus Tasmania) as a test case. SA has transitioned to almost 100% renewable supply in under a decade.

We have a cost effective, distributed, redundant, easy to build solution. SMRs are not proven in cost or reliability. They should be studied and trialed, but not at the expense of acting responsibly today.

It’s not even quite that - the article suggested they raised the commercial equivalent of the 12% through competitive auction. These allow the bidders a set price over 20 years.

So it’s cheaper than buying in fossil fuels, the suppliers get certainty, and they achieve close to complete decarbonisation using private investment.

How good is that?

They’re not even companies that make the goods you buy. Almost all of them - exclusively - are fossil fuel energy companies.

If you don’t limit car use, and you don’t buy renewable power, then you’re absolutely part of the problem. If you give a shit about the future there’s plenty of action you personally can and should take.

Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2 were ones that I always enjoyed trying to play when I was younger, but never seemed to be able to survive for more than a few minutes. So I’d give up in frustration. Maybe I should give them another go before 3 comes out.

It’s the Adobe model though. It’ll seem attractive to start with compared to upgrading every few years, but soon enough you’ll be paying out the nose for it.

The old Slashdot obsession of calling out logical fallacies lead to the hyper normalisation of climate change denial. We had a whole load of really smart people who were very quick to call out any appeal to authority (of, you know, actual climate scientists), but a bit too lazy to read the source material themselves.

Nice theory but it doesn’t hold up very well. Both Canada and Australia are enormous countries that are both well functioning democracies.

There are a number of great sources that describe the conditions for good democracies - and intolerance of corruption is a vital condition. That’s something that has never really been taken seriously in Russia, so in some ways it’s no surprise it’s come to this.

The good old Google way. I’ve no idea why so many people are so willing to hand over everything to them. Say what you like about Apple, but at least they’re not selling your personal info.

I don’t see this being very popular in Australia. It misses the mark for why people buy a Ute or dual cab here.

Can you find any recent analysis that supports your claim that nuclear costs are at the same level as solar?

The only one I’ve seen suggest this was from a nuclear industry lobby group, and it inflated the costs or solar by insane amounts.

In Australia this is a bit of a hot topic and all impartial estimates suggest that nuclear will not get close to renewables in any way, even taking into account storage and grid costs.

In the 10 years since this single reactor was built, one of our states has transitioned to almost 100% renewables. Wholesale costs have plummeted, but renewable projects are still profitable in the market. I was involved in a reactor project in a western nation some time ago (it’s still being completed unsurprisingly), and the lock-in wholesale price to support that project was simply extortionate. Solar generation prices are a whole magnitude smaller.

You can do this but it makes them even more expensive, because you’ve built an expensive plant for operational capacity that you don’t use.

We should be load following with storage, not nukes.

I’m not being facetious or unkind here, but for many 10’s of thousands of years we have been developing meaningful social circles by seeing people in person. Just give it a go!

Off topic, but can I ask how & what about the anxiety meds? I deal with it all but it’s exhausting sometimes. The last time o spoke to a GP about it (5 years ago) they talked me out of taking things any further because of impacts to insurance/etc.

But it was still enjoyable, useful, and arguably even more dynamic back then. The signal to noise ratio was much much better then. More content isn’t necessarily a benefit.

It’s not historical, but you can play Eve and get all this. The economy is almost entirely player driven, and is tied into industry and logistics - also all entirely player driven. Prices and demand shift, and of course you can also scam people out of everything if you want.

You can be one of the most successful players and not ever fire a shot.

In the 2019 mega-fires, Sydney hit a max of over 2,500.

It can get a lot worse yet…
