If they were not aware of it before buying then it is illegal.

Maybe we should stop calling them adblockers.

I am not blocking ads I am blocking spyware and malicious scripts. I wouldn't have anything against well behaving ads without js.

Also making it illegal is nit necessary, just don't show me your content and exclude it from search results and we are good.

This is news from September and linked blog post from December. Nothing happened.

I, personally, would prefer slower linear and more organic growth. I want people to be here because the want to come, not because they want to run away from somewhere else.

But I do acknowledge that there was not much discussion going on and was not enough content for my procrastinating habits, nor I could keep myself informed in current events.

Thou I have had lemmy.ml account for three years now I never heard of beehaw before this reddit wave started, so that might be on me.

While I am positive overall, I do not like that some bad habits from reddit are resurfacing here, mostly not being able to have different opinion without someone insulting you.

I hope there will be enough instances where discussion and difference in opinion will be nurtured and welcome.

Recommendation from app developer is to use web interface until your instance uptates to 0.18, and probably to 0.18.1 since than will captcha be back.

They had to do it since they changed from using websockets to http calls in 0.18. Maybe downgrading is of jerboa is possible.

How much older people "don't know fuck about fuck".

As youngling I thought elder know something and I believed them.

Now I know they didn't know anything, same as me and my friends don't.

I never understand hate ladybird and SymphonyOS is getting in fediverse.

People are doing interesting work against all odds, everyone ever just saying "it is not possible", finding some random comments from project founder to hate.

But you know what? You and your opinion is not important. People are not doing this to make Linux competitor or Mozzila competitor but to have fun and learn something new.

I also don't want apple near it, but Andreas learned browser development on Safari and with looking for "popular enought" memory safe language it is rust vs swift and just by looking at the code becomes obvious how easier Swift is to pick up. Especially for someone comming from C++.

Haters gonna hate, I wish them luck. Failing is ok too.

Imagine me sending tar.gz without second though.

It was first time they saw file with two extensions. They got scared and worried.

This thread reminds me of stackoverflow, most people are just convincing you in something else and it is obvious they have never been in your (and mine) situation.

Just answer question if you have some idea, yes we know python exist, that's nice, but not an answer to this question.

And in US is other way around, every political party has blessing of companies.

I learned to put ice cubes on herpes outbursts as zoon as I notice it.

It stopes progression immediately and has never grown so much that I was ashamed of it.

I think at some point we will have to introduce human confirmation from creator side.

I don't mind someone using chatgpt as a tool to write better articles, but most of internet is sensles bs.

I never understood why is assisted suicide illegal.

I understand that there are dangers of misuse, but some cases are obvious.

While I have found help and I am living good life now, I was in the problem for 15 years and even thou I am happy now - I still think it was not worth it.

If I knew how bad my next 15 years would be, I would like to finish it long time ago.

That's main reason I like Klingons so much.

I really like the idea that position if big social networks is not secure, that will make all of them think before making bad decisions.

Facebook is almost dead, at least around me (Meta is not with IG and Wapp), I am now starting to hope that reddit would not recover.

They have been digging this grave for some time now. We should let them go.

surprised Pikachu

AI has been paying of for decades, it is used in all industries for appropriate tasks.

Now it is even better we are doing stuff no one thought it could be possible and advancing our work.

Perfect use case is for things that are simple to do but take too much time to be economical for humans (ex. counting products, plants, trees, cars, disease detection...) and using additional data to make better decisions.

Generative AI (for writing text, coding,... ) is of course no where close to being useful, but it can interesting to try. It is just a toy, expensive one, but still a toy.

Yes, most people give up as soon as something does not work first time.

Maybe there are enough of us to be enough abd to fix those annoying little things that make lemmy complicated to use.

A lot if issues got resolved, apps are here,it is getting better fast.

Or are just being given slow and aweful low end android phones. IPhones will be faster and better in every way.

It was the same with laptops 10-15 years ago, people were comparing cheap 400USD laptops with 1500USD macbooks and saying thise are better without ever seeing 1000+ USD PC.

It is about money/status and performance too.

I can freely laugh at a colleague with new 1.5k USD macbook with soldered 8GB ram + soldered 512GB SSD while using my three year old thinkpad with 48GB of RAM and 2TB SSD costing the same with upgrades.

I visited reddit yesterday.

For me it was visit to Louis Rossman https://youtube.com/watch?v=Shn7LdIrViQ

Truth is, I didn't know of Linus than, was only fan of Louis, but the way Linus was acting throughout that video was just unpleasant for me. I wouldn't wanna be in Louis' shoes than.

Second was recently in that Linux challenge where, I was convinced, he was working hard to find that bug and show to everyone how bas he is. His complaint of Linux was that it allowed him to delete software Linux told him not to delete. Yeah... cool.

Keep in mind that it all started 20 years ago with Pulseaudio. Pottering was not really a nice guy (on mailing lists ofc, I don't know him personally) whose software I wanted on my machine.

Problem was never speed or even technical, problem was trust on original author and single-mindedness that they were promoting. Acting like it is the only way forward, so anyone believing in freedom part of free software was against it. Additionally, it was looking like tactics used by proprietary software companies to diminish competition.

It looked scary to some of us, and it still does, even worse is that other software started having it as hard dependency.

All of this looks like it was pushed from one place: Portering and RedHat.

While after 20 years I might have gotten a bit softer, you can imagine that 15 years ago some agresive and arogant guy who had quite a bad habbit of writing (IMHO) stupid opinions wanted to take over my init system... no, I will not let him, not for technical reasons but for principal.

I want solutions to come from community and nice people, even if they are inferior, I will not have pottering's code on my machine so no systemd and no pulseaudio for me, thank you, and for me it is an important choice to have.

I was on that moment for years, just there was no real substitute. Hopefully, lemmy will remain big enough.

I'm curious why especially lemmy.ml wouldn't wait for full release - surely after 6 RCs the full release is imminent?

lemmy.ml is official developer instance, makes moste sense to test it out here after dev servers.

It is unbelievable we do not have standard document format.

While title is click bite, they do say right at the beginning:

*Right now, it is pulling through only because of Microsoft's $10 billion funding *

Pretty hard to miss, and than they go to explain their point, which might be wrong, but still stands. 700k i only one model, there are others and making new ones and running the company. It is easy over 1B a year without making profit. Still not significant since people will pour money into it even after those 10B.

Same here, I don't understand people buying phones without SD card and than complaining about it.

They sent a message to manufacturer that they don't want SD cart slot and of course in the next year evel less phones will have it.

Thing is you also stop sharing and commenting and engaging with other users. If it wasn't useful they would pull the plug long ago, nothing technical is preventing them.

It really depends on your needs. 3D printing community is very satisfied with FreeCAD, and GIMP is great for my needs when I need to find a way to increase visibility of some features in drone images and than make python script to repet it hundreds of times. No way I could do it in in PS. Making it run under wine already takes too much time.

And it is not only about money for license but about freedom.

I always see coments like this, and while I appreciate sharing of experience it is just being boring. At least add something specific and don't be a bot.

We call it something like 'half circle turn'.

Other advices are good, talk to him and explain how hard it is on you.

My suggestion is not to expect fast change even if he understands the problem. This habits are hard to change, but possible. Just talk to him and talk again and again until he changes it.

Another idea is that he is, unintentionally, projecting his stress onto you. I would guess he dies have some anxiety or depression issues, maybe evem he is not avare of. This is socially acceptable way of showing it to his partne.

I can not watch the video now but I have read description.

Thing is I see them more as entertainers than IT professionals, so I don't expect any valid data from them. If not before, it became obvious with the whole Linux for a month fiasco where he complains that it's Linux's falult he deleted important packages.

But I get it, youtube is forcing this dramatic, often, high performing videos on all creators. You can see it explained very often by various youtubers.

Of course they care more about quantity, because Algorithm will punish them for not publishing and they will disappear.

No one living from youtube can not be trusted right now, they are all forced to publish often clickbity dramatic videos.

I don't know what will AI suggest.

I work in sustainable agronomy R&D, yes we most certainly can. Just by changing agricultural practices we can achive a lot. Not all of a sudden, but slowly we van change it in few decades.

We can also go back to small and efficient cars. Looks like electric cars gave us right to pollute more and ignore problems electric cars are bringing and we don't have solutions.

We can also produce and buy locally.

We can add tax and real price to plastic producers, corn producers, meat producers, coal, nuclear. Real and complete price they have on environment and society. Don't use uranium from slave mines in Africa, or lithium from undeveloped countries and say "it's cheap".

Develop and use public transportation.

So we do have a lot of knowelage how to reduce pollution, but we just don't like consequences.

So the right question is if we will do something about it and in that I am not certain. Until now I see no movement in the good side.

I understand she wants freedom in a house she lives in.

But if you go to visit your parents it is not of her concern. She can not get both.

She might be worried about some fantasy she has, but it might not be too bad in the end.

I am in this situation. My parther is close (physically and emotionally) to her family and I wouldn't want them visiting. But I am happy for her (without me) to go.

Problem arises when she wants me to go too and that's where fight starts. Either eight away or after visit, wether I go or not.

No advice, just my experience.

I like that this question is generating resoonses.

My opinion, as a "techie" (although not even close to rich one) with a lot of aritists among friens, is that the resson is the same as to why artists don't contribute to open source software.

We don't have the knowledge to understand it, and my feeling is that most art is created for other artists. Whenever I go to some new exhibition, it is utterly borring if none of my educated artist friends are not with me to explain me why is something interesting and how. Also, why something else is utterly shit.

Artist world is not doing nearly enough to educate non artists and help us understand what is being created.

Also, looks like you don't count games, music, movies and who knows what else as art.
