Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter, TikTok. Most people I work with think I'm totally out of touch with reality because I don't use any of the big social media platforms and then they watch the same 12 ads and 3 videos on 5 different apps.
the pair’s private chat history
There is no such thing as a private chat on a platform you do not own. And even if you DO own the platform it is only as private as the participants decide it to be. Hopefully people start to realize this before complete non-privacy becomes the accepted norm.
I repurposed my 2008 ThinkPad as a server, saving it from the trash for yet another year!
The are a requirement for distributing a document that has to look the same on every device. I don't love them and Adobe can go take a flying fuck but if I NEED to make sure that my boss doesn't alter a document it has to be a PDF.
When plastics were first introduced to consumers it was sold as indestructible, it will never wear out, never degrade! People were actually concerned at the time, why anyone buy disposable products that never break down, won't they just pile up forever?
After much lobbying the concept of recycling plastics was introduced to help consumers stop worrying about all this indestructible waste and help push the sales of cheap plastic products. Your mom has the right idea, not buying it in the first place is the only way to drive demand down.
Electrician here, came to upvote, realized I should be posting. My formal computer training ended with Java and qBasic in 2003.

When using solar directly to heat water how much more efficient can you get than a black container?
Yeah, that's pretty much it. I don't want to use a kit/show car for commuting.
Ubuntu has a bigger market share in the support department. Makes it easier to find advice that applies specifically to your setup.
Nope, I have a hard enough time thinking about my consciousness being "the same person" even after sleeping. No way am I getting taken apart and cloned by choice.
Arthur C. Clarke covered it in his first published story.
I don’t travel by wire! You see, I helped invent the thing!

It's also not obsolete.
If it weren't for VirtualBox I would avoid them all together. It's just so damned convenient though.
I moved from Vegas to kden and while not painless I am not missing any features. Would recommend!
Canada is right behind the USA in this respect. Our politicians are transparently corrupt, our health care is only good when compared to the US and we have an assbackwards vocal right who would vote Trump if only they were given the chance.
millennials
Do I really have to read past this word?
Change directories in the command line with this one weird trick!
Customizing all-in-one distros is a shitty uphill battle that isn't worth the trouble, so I get how Arch is worth the work there. But recommending a kit car when people are asking for a commuter just bugs me.
Debian, sudo, at least when ever I install it without a desktop.
edit: I'm dumb af, it tells you right in the installer, I just never read it
I map them every day.
It requires active user participation. Windows, Mac, iOS and Android will all "work" even if you have no idea what you are doing and no plans to to learn. Just keep running the apps or downloading .exes from cnet.
You can stumble your way through Linux as well but it's a lot less forgiving. If something doesn't work immediately it's up to the user to search the relevant keywords and see if there is a is a fix. That can be frustrating if you aren't so great with a search engine, you don't know what the relevant terms are or you don't know how to implement a fix that is not for your exact setup.
I don't care if I have to see unobtrusive ads (not overlays, not popups, not unskippable videos) ads help keep many web services free, sometimes I even find it helpful when ads are relevant to my recent searches or the page I am looking at. But having companies build up profiles about me and then share that between themselves is bullshit, that kind of behavior would be treated as stalking if done by an individual, why is it ok for a business?
Except for my AMD 1800x that was 4 years old when W11 launched and not supported.
There are some communities that never transitioned to Lemmy, so I'll be using them untill old.reddit is disabled.
I wish the "Dark Web" hadn't turned into shit show, Just looking into it now gets you onto some fuckin watch list but it would have been a perfectly viable place to set up a proper censorship-free web. It also takes care of the user-quality issue by being slightly harder to use than a button that says "INSTALL APP NOW!"

Fixed your code :D
Company I'm at runs Windows server. Kill me.
That does explain my dislike of semicolons and case-sensitive variable names.
Type the first 8 chars and see if you can still log in?
The only encrypted file I have is my kdbx.
If you use strong passwords and keep an eye on your logs you are no less safe than any other public facing entity. I've had a bunch of services exposed since 2020 so far no one has even bothered to brute the basic auth on Apache (though bot nets take a run at SSH a few times a year).
Guess I'm a low-value client.
I was about 16 and made a Slax CD to get around my schools locked down WinNT/XP installs. After school I ran Ubuntu on an '06 Acer laptop for a while but later switched to W7 for gaming. When W10 launched with ads in the start menu I moved to Debian and have been totally happy since then.
There are plenty of friendlier distors out there that have novice users in mind and help them learn the basics. Debian is the distro you choose because you have a specific goal in mind, could be a server, a dev machine, or to build your own distro, but not as 'my-first-install.'
Check eBay for ThinkPads from 2-3 years ago. They are usually from offices, in good shape and reasonably priced. I used a W500 for 10 years with Debian and it was awesome, then I used an X220 for 5 years with no issues at all.
I know there are other factors it just feels like the only people getting screwed are the little guys. In Canada the rates that third party ISPs pay and charge are dictated by the giant telcos. Our regulating body even allowed the telcos to raise prices to the point where reselling is no longer viable. Fucking the little guys again.
Whenever humans aglomerate, non productive humans require handouts to live. If they do not receive then they die. If they don’t want to die, they will steal.
Yeah, we know, politicians.
Hey, this isn't where I parked my car.
100% Ubuntu. They have great hardware support and spend a lot of time making sure the user's experience is smooth. The snap package thing is annoying but can be worked around.
Running Zoneminder so my GF can keep an eye on her shop from her phone (without paying someone a subscription).
Arch, I want to get some work done not save 3 extra CPU cycles on boot.
