Just reflect on it for a while

Did you know YAML is a recursive acronym? It stands for 'YAML AML MAML LAML'

The proposal [prohibits] the use, sale, import and export of food and feed "from cell cultures or tissue derived from vertebrate animals".

Am I missing something, is it a translation issue, or did they just ban meat?

Oh for goodness sake. 400MJ in for 3.15MJ out is not a net energy gain. I wish just once they'd be honest about what they do, it's ok to do basic physics research without pretending you've saved the world every six months.

Terf mindset is fascinating. It's like they need their conceptual models to literally be objective reality. Accepting even a glimmer of uncertainty into the perfect essential binary law of nature would just implode their whole world, and they know it. So nothing is off the table. The entire basis of reality is at stake and they'll sacrifice you, me and themselves to protect it.

With the way all the Maya stuff was presented as mysteries of an ancient civilization, it was a real surprise for me to find out the Maya are just, like, there. If you want to know the deal with the Maya calendar you can just ask them. They're the ones stood outside the archeological sites selling t-shirts.

Don't forget the psychic space nuns

Hey, didn't I cut a scene from one of those movies? Yeah that's the one. I want to put it back in. let's see. Ah crap, that guy there, what's his name? Jab..Jaffa? He needs to be a slug. Can we change that? What the hell, it's the 90s, we can find some computer nerd to do that. Needs to be bigger too. Like, erm, bigger than the frame? Will that work? Ah what the fuck keep him man sized, he's a space monster he can change size or some shit. That bit there - whassname, Sulu, he needs to be standing on Jagger's tail. Just make him stand on the tail. Cut him out and move him up and down it'll look fine. Yeah sure, I'd stand on a mafioso's tail - it's a power move, they respect that. What's this scene about anyway? Yada yada, removing the bounty, yada yada.. yeah I remember there was something about a bounty in one of those movies. It all fits. It's like I planned it all in advance.

Placebo buttons.

Some appliances like elevators or traffic crossings cycle automatically, but they still have (non-functional) buttons. If the buttons are removed, people complain that the wait is too long. Let them push a button while they wait, and they'll think it's much quicker.

I've found that for chatGPT specifically;

  • it really likes to restate your question in its opening sentence
  • it also likes to wrap up with a take-home message. "It's important to remember that.."
  • it starts sentences with little filler words and phrases. "In short," "that said," "ultimately," "on the other hand,"
  • it's always upbeat, encouraging, bland, and uncontroversial
  • it never (that I've seen) gives personal anecdotes
  • it's able to use analogies but not well. They never help elucidate the matter

If only the virus had a better sense of irony

I have not seen any obvious chatbot posts on Lemmy, outside of jokes like the top comment in this thread. Whereas by the time I left Reddit I was finding and reporting 2 or 3 per day. This could mean

  • no-one's seriously deploying chatbots yet on Lemmy
  • the chatbots here are better than the ones I saw on Reddit, or at least different enough that I can't recognise them
  • the parts of Lemmy I see, and the parts where bots post don't have much overlap
  • I was actually a bot all along

Wikipedia's figures for the last time they made this claim. The exact figures might be a bit different this time round, but I doubt they've found 99% efficiency gains. Livermore sends out this sort of press release pretty regularly and it always comes down to the same creative accounting

Basically, there's a whole load of input energy that they just don't count. Heat? Doesn't count. UV? Doesn't count. Plasma? Doesn't count. this diagram from the wiki might be instructive. There may be decent justifications for counting it like this - I don't know, I'm not a nuclear physicist. But I think the way they continue to report it to the media is simply dishonest.

It's called Guy Fawkes night, not James 1st night or Cecil of Salisbury night. We mark it by setting off explosions and burning things, just like Guido wanted to do. Guido gets the cool character design, and big screen reimaginings where he's a badass counterculture dude. Guido failed in his plot, but he won the PR war.

I lived in a city, had occasional need for a car. A car club would have been ideal. Don't need to spend thousands on a car upfront, don't need to deal with maintenance, don't need to secure parking.

Problem? The only car club in town was called whizzgo. Like, a toddler word for urination. Written on all the cars in big colourful letters. No thanks.

That's because your question was a non sequitur. Why is a raven like a writing desk?

They never gave me feedback on any of the scams I reported - they just removed my ability to report ads at all

It's endlessly vexing that there's only one first person form in English, or any other language I know of. There's my body, my conscious experience, my thoughts, my persona, my emotions, my volition, and none of them consistently play nice with each other. And I have to describe this mess with 'I' and 'my' and 'self' and somehow come out with a coherent sentence?

most people that search for videos of protestors, are looking to see them get owned.

Not necessarily so. YouTube are after engagement. As the mantra goes; comment, like, share, and subscribe. Sometimes that means showing people what they want to see, sometimes it means getting them hooked on a short term dopamine loop, and sometimes it means making them fight

Super secret Nazi numbers for the super secret Nazi club. 14 = 14 words of some tedious slogan that they're fond of, and 88 = HH = Howdly-doodly Hitlerinos

If you put a ! In front of the link, like this;

It should show inline that's the neat part, you don't

I think it was Cave Story that prompted the modern indie revival of this genre

In case you mean pictures like this; http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Milky_Way_Galaxy.jpg - they are not actually images of the Milky Way. As you've guessed, we can't directly see it in its full spirally goodness from the inside. Instead, these pictures are either artist's impressions based on scientific understanding, or pictures of different galaxies that are reckoned to be pretty similar to the Milky Way.

I have started;

  • Saving funny/relatable images like this when I come across them.
  • Texting them one a day to, basically the one person I'm still in regular contact with.

It fulfills the role of keeping in touch (like small talk does for regular people), without so far causing any of the anxiety, procrastination, out of sight out of mind, ghosting problems that typically plague my relationships. YMMV, naturally.

Isn't it more like, a guy who wanted to kill the Queen talked to a chatbot about it, and the chatbot rolled with it cos chatbots will default to rolling with whatever you give them? Just seems the likely scenario to me ..

Yep, this BBC article has a couple of the chat logs. If they're representative, the bot is no more culpable than if he asked a magic 8-ball.

Boys? Don't dig deeper than you are tall, ok? Sand can fall in on itself. If it's up to your neck, we dig you out. If it's over your head, we don't get to come to the beach again.

Got that, boys? Okay. Grab a spade.

They would fall through the center of the earth, continue back up through the mantle, pop up momentarily to spook someone on the opposite hemisphere, then repeat the whole trip in reverse with a period of about 40 minutes.

It's not specifically about those same individuals, but I want to mention Dan Olsen's documentary In Search of a Flat Earth, which touches more on the ideology of the flat earth movement, and how it's developed in recent years. No spoilers, peeps!

in case you're being serious

I don't know what sort of person could be an active Lemmy user, on the Blahaj instance no less, and not ever have encountered tankies or terfs. Frankly I'm jealous

And don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone?

It hides your placket. You don't want people walking around with their plackets on show do you?
