Don't know if you'll get something for as low as $20, but a small thermal printer. Functions as a label maker on steroids, there is no ink, or proprietary* paper. Some thermal paper rolls have built in stickers, some are transparent, some have special shapes and colors, etc.

I've used it to label plants, tools, cables, boxes, so-so-many gridfinity boxes. It takes 1-2 seconds from hitting print to having it ready.

* not entirely the case, in that some have set sizes, or markings to automatically feed and count. However, these are low tech, and there are third party vendors.

Is the one I went for. I like the flexibility in being able to use different width rolls. I don't have a lot of suggestions other than that, since it depends a lot on which use case you have.

I think all of them use the same app (don't quote me on it), which had decent enough reviews: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.project.aimotech.printmaster

I'm sure there are other brands too.

To anyone wondering. Sauna boats are not common in Norway. It's not "a thing". Please don't add it to the list of Scandinavian stereotypes 🙏

Could "Billionaire X's latest stupid remark" not be considered "technology" news?

The more accurate description is "Israel's war against Palestine". And, given the power difference and stated goals: "Israel's ongoing genocide of Palestine".

And if you think that it sounds a bit too disturbing, just try to imagine a pile of 4000 children. It might ruin your day.

Until proven otherwise, I assume either ignorance or malicious intentions by those who want to rename these "problematic" terms. It does nothing to improve the actual issues.

The false pretense of having done something, is worse than doing nothing. It's just noise.

To be clear: I don't mind the changing of terms. I'm too old to care about trivial stuff like main vs master. But if the reasoning for such a change is dumb and potentially harmful, you've lost my respect.

Can you point to a way in which the actions, policies, or rhetoric of the Israeli government meaningfully differs from those of Novemberpogrome-era (Krystalnacht-era) Nazi Germany?

They spoke German.

Some years ago ago, I was a happy subscriber to Google Music. But, they added it to the graveyard, and instead grafted on some music playing functionality to YouTube and called it YouTube Music. So, I went back to Spotify.

Then I started paying for YouTube Premium Lite. It wasn't unreasonably expensive, although it was a bit annoying I couldn't just have "YouTube" in the household, like with Netflix. So if wife would cast a video to the TV, it would play with ads.

It was about a year ago, when Google starting cracking down on adblockers, that they also removed an option to pay for the service. I think YouTube Premium Lite wasn't a thing in the US (correct me if I'm wrong), but they removed YT Premium Lite, and the only option left was a twice as expensive YouTube Premium bundle that included YouTube Music.

Tldr: fucked up Google Music, then removed an option to pay for YouTube premium, leaving a fairly expensive alternative with the pile of shit they replaced Google music with. It'll be a rough time if they manage to force ads. I won't pay for it, out of principle.

Edit: I looked at the numbers again. I'd have to pay more for YouTube than for the highest Netflix tier. It's more than Prime and HBO combined. They also don't have to front large sums to fund risky projects. If they didn't include YouTube Music, I might have considered it. But with it, it just pisses me off, they can go get f.ed

Given that they are committing a war crime against 2 million people, which by some definition can be considered hostages... This is quite rich.

Hopefully we reach the point where we simply don't gaf about anyone's religion or lack thereof. Being offended is on you.

Here is my opinion on some FOSS software. PS, I'm too old to give a shit about team mentality, I just want stuff to work. Also, my motivation for liking FOSS is not so much "free", but rather "unencumbered and unrestricted shared human technology and knowledge".

  • GNOME, for the hate it gets, it comes close to getting everything right. I'd give it a 95/100 score. Windows a 30/100, and MacOS a 35/100. No verdict/comment on KDE as I haven't used it. I have good reasons for disliking W10/W11 and separate ones for MacOS. As desktop environments, they are both shit for each their own reasons.
  • Blender. 3D/Scultping/Drawing/Video Editing. Aside from Linux kernel, the most impressive and well managed FOSS project there is. I grew up with pirated 3dsmax, and what a dream it would be to grow up today with Blender as it is.
  • Linux as a OS kernel. One can argue about the desktop market share, but people don't know better. They think the software that runs on it defines it. But, there is a reason why 100% of top 500 supercomputers in this world run on Linux. I'd also mention the Arch/AUR community. Doesn't matter if you use Arch or not, arch/aur wiki is a goldmine.
  • Godot: 2D game engine. As a 3d game engine, it's not nearly as good as the non-FOSS competition.
  • Firefox: If it wasn't for Firefox, I don't know what I would do. I don't trust chrome one single bit.
  • Alacrity terminal: I'm sure there are plenty great FOSS terminal emulators, but the built in ones for MacOS and Windows are garbage.
  • Prusa Slicer: I think this one is as good as the commercial counterparts for FDM G-code generation.
  • VLC. Mixed feelings about this one, as I think it's UI is lacking, but since it plays almost everything the UX ends up being great.
  • LibreOffice Writer. Perhaps debatable. But the fact that you can trust LibreOffice to respect and adhere to the OpenDocumentFormat, and equally trust Microsoft Word to deliberately not do so in subtle ways, LibreOffice Writer is ultimately the better software IMHO.

Projects I wish had an edge over commercial proprietary software:

  • Gimp. It just isn't as good, even if you get used to it. Some things, of course, it can do much better (e.g the G'Mic QT filter pack). The lack of non-destructive work flows is the key part that is missing.
  • FreeCAD. It's good, and you can do wonders with it, but oh so rough compared to onshape/Fusion/etc.
  • Darktable. Not as good as commercial counterparts like Lightroom.
  • Kdenlive. Not as good as Davinci Resolve, or the adobe counterparts.
  • LMMS: Not as good as most commercial DAWs.
  • Krita: This one is actually not too far away from being best in class. I still suspect photoshop and has an edge
  • InkScape: A "best for some vector things but not all"-kinda thing. It's FOSS nature makes it the defacto vector editing software for certain kind of makers. But as a graphical vector editing suite, adobe's stuff is just much more solid.

Mobile stuff that I think is better than the counterpart, or at least so good that I don't care if there is a counterpart

Wasn't she also jailed in the US? I never understood why politicians there are allowed to do insider trading. Then again, previous prime minister where im from basically did the same, but said "sorry", so it's cool.

Since no one answered your question. I'll assume you were just curious about the numbers. It's easy enough to answer.

Around 23k civilians in Gaza have been killed by Israel since October 7th. On 9/11 2001, around 2.6k were killed in those attacks. So, around 8.8 “worth” of 9/11s.

Given 94 days since October 7th, it would be a “9/11 amount of civilian casualties” every 10.6 days.

Or perhaps:

A “Hamas October 7th” every 5 days. For over 3 months straight.

It's bonkers to me that one would subsidize an insanely profitable business sector. Smells like straight up corruption and stealing from public to private interests.

Oh wow. I checked the stats for Norway, which is at 12%. https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/norway Sweden and Denmark at <2%, Finland 4%, Iceland 3%. That is a surprising W for Norway.

I'm fine with a lenient punishment. If it turns out he did it to get attention, I'm happy to grant him that wish by an exceptionally harsh punishment, so much so that more little shits wanting to make society worse and being rewarded for it, will see that the risk is too high. Don't go into female only carriages in Japan, don't cut down trees, don't do dumb stunts against homeless people, etc.

Half the time it's paid actors, but when it's not, throw the book at them, or force extended community service to remedy the harm they do. Financially penalise any monetary gain made from such stunts. Etc.

It will happen sooner or later. It has no legal right to exist. It's much easier to destroy it than to repair it. So, it's just a question of when.

This is satire, right? Surely no one would put their name on that publicly?

Like someone working in a kitchen boasting about a life hack of not wasting time with hygiene.

Indeed. There are many still who are making big bucks on this misconception. The worst offender in my opinion is "The dog whisperer", who is likely the worst well known dog trainer, and has done (and still does) a lot of damage. The whole basis for his school of thought is based on this alpha/beta/omega hierarchy.

Based on social media the last week. Your comment isn't obviously sarcastic any more. It's just sad how horrible people are. And so many.

I miss the days with Opera. Not only could it group tabs, but it had previews too. Mouse gestures. Keyword searches. Page link filters and batch operations. RSS-reader. Chrome didn't even exist back then, and IE and Firefox are still playing catch up. Kinda amazing to think about it.

Vivaldi is the spiritual successor, but having to use chromium rendering engine, it's so many concessions and steps back. Has the mouse gestures, tho.

Are you thinking about daylight savings time? I'd agree there, but timezones absolutely make sense, and we've always used some version of it. "See you at noon" has a sort of built in timezone, as does sunrise and sunset. We (all human societies) relate hours to the day in a similar, albeit more regular way. If you did away with timezones, you'd replace a minor inconvenience with a monstrous one. Everyone uses what, GMT? Naah

The... UI in blender is really good. Have you used any other equivalent software or know how complicated it is?

It's not "good but it's a hard problem to solve". It is more "great and it's a hard problem to solve"

It saddens me that the best to have compatibility is to never touch MS Office. They are the largest player by far. Subtly fucking up or deviating from open document standards will always be seen as "well, the issue is non MS office".

I can also mention that it works flawlessly on Linux even with the GoG version (still through proton). It's uncommon for such games to be on GoG day one, and I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.

Orange chicken.

It was my comfort food while studying in the US. At Panda Express it was cheap, convenient, and delicious.

Then I tried making it. And... although I could make delicious-er, it was too much work. Then I forgot how much work it was, and made it again, and I swore, never again. I don't have a proper kitchen or a fryer, and it took me about two hours of active work (if you're serving 8 people). Most other food I make is max 20 minutes, and the rest is just time passing and heat doing its thing. Even dishes that take 8 hours to prepare, is usually still only 20-30 minutes of labour.

Without the right kitchen equipment. Never again.

I might make it again soon.

I'd be willing to bet good money that this is pretty fucking terrorising to the people who live in Gaza.

It's also predictable to see your username on every post about Israel doing evil shit. Always taking the apologetic tone. Not to wrap myself in tinfoil, but, you wouldn't be part of some propaganda machinery, right? Perhaps just a sucker for one?

Oh, and where were we on the "Do you condemn Israel for its genocide"? Ifs and buts, still, I presume?

Why do I get the feeling you might be younger than the average age here? Maybe missing an /s?

If you are genuinely asking, I can play Devil's advocate:

Because then they can set the price at 40 USD, making it more affordable, and possibly make back the difference with some (mostly) cosmetic premium content.

This is not so easy to argue for games that are sold at 70 USD, and premium content is much more tied to gameplay, and all the FOMO dark patterns are turned to max.

Joke aside, scales on earth measure force and show mass on the assumption of the gravitational pull on earth. On a moon colony, you'd use measuring scales with a different value for the gravitational pull, and get the same values for mass as on earth.

Edit: Also, if anyone finds this stuff interesting to think about. You can measure mass without any force of gravity, but having the measuring device accelerate (e.g. shake) the stuff you want to measure. From "F=ma", knowing F and a, you get m.

When you say "left wing". I assume you use the US political reference, right?

Just so you know, in a lot of places, "US left wing" is further right than the most (non-fringe) right wing party there is.

And as such, the perception of politics in the US goes from "insane but maybe a step in the right direction" to "absolute evil and/or destructive/immoral"

My point, which I'm not trying to make to annoy or offend you, but you might want to reflect on: A lot of what is considered "political left wing" in the US, is "common sense" elsewhere.

So, you running into discussion forums is not necessarily that they are "left wing", but rather not deprived of morality, and share a different set of common sense values of creating a society that is fair, the vulnerable and sick are taken care of, no one is exploited, etc etc. That just happens to be "socialism" according to Americans, and otherwise the full political spectrum in my country as to the nuances on how to best achieve that.
