People hate Linux because shows they aren’t computer experts, they’re just Windows power users.
A linux distro is a linux distro. It’s you, who invests the time to experiment and understand, who unlocks advanced features. There’s no shortcuts to learning Linux than to use it and read about it and install it many many times.
Without a chronological feed or a feed of followers only, Threads is cluttered with extraneous content that gets in the way of what users want.
An article in the FT said this, and the missing direct messaging and hashtag stuff is all geared around the fact that Threads is merely a platform for brands and influencers/content creators. Threads can win since it doesn’t need to make a profit and it’s set up from the start to do revenue splitting.
Every website is looking at engagement to keep users whilst serving adverts. Before tik-tok that engagement came from socialising and online discussions. The social media era. Post tik-tok it’s literally just scrolling through mindless 10 second videos from small content creators and the directly social side is effectively second rate, and by design.

I’ve been on Reddit for 16 years and I’d say yes it’s very similar. Like Reddit back then it was very tech focused and quite liberal.
I do think people are a bit more vicious online these days than they used to be and a bit more polarised.
From a content perspective there used to be more blog content than tech news content, but it’s fairly similar. What I like about Lemmy is it’s far less commercial and the conversation is more genuine.
However I don’t think Lemmy will become Reddit in 15 years, I think it may languish in eternal obscurity and I’m actually okay with that.
Reddit exploded when Digg crumbled and the same could happen with Reddit crumbling but idk, there seems to be some stickiness to Internet websites these days.
I think it’s because TOTP requires some sort of initial token sync that is more complicated than entering a telephone number. There’s also no need to have people backup codes etc. To use Authy for example I need to photograph a QR code and have a smart phone.
Text message as a solution works on older non-smart phones so it’s possibly the “most widely accessible” solution.
From a backend perspective as well it’s just an API text $random to $phone.

I don’t think you should proactively “switch to Linux”. Instead you should “play with Linux”, ideally duel boot and a day will come when you can’t remember the last time you used Windows.
Same here. I’ve only a Linux machine for over a decade but I had to go out and buy Windows just so I could play on FaceIT. I’m praying that cs2 supports Linux and the MM experience is good enough to make FaceIT obsolete.
The first consideration is always your internet speed. If you’re building a pc then you’re self hosting from house. In many countries the internet is ADSL meaning the upload is very slow but the download is fast. However for hosting you need fast upload. You’ll need a fibre connection to stream video from home.
I rent a server in the cloud to do self-hosting due to the subtle difference in my definition of hosting, being that I control the services and data they hold, not that they are literal hosted at home.
Beyond that consideration I’d say everything else is trial and error and you should experiment.

As a senior developer I see it unlocking so much more power in computing than a regular coder can muster.
There are literally cars in America driving around on their own, interacting with other traffic , navigating problems and junctions, following gestures and laws. It’s incredible and more impressive than chatgpt is. We are on our way to self-driving cars and lorries, self-service checkouts, delivery services and taxis, more efficient machines in agriculture and so many other things. It’s touching every facet of life.
we’re at a point where we’ve seen so many wonderful benefits of AI it’s time to apply it to everything and see what sticks.

Processor manufacturers target their devices and sales towards cloud computing so they have a huge incentive to avoid having issues like these. It’s ridiculous to suggest otherwise.

For young people discovering Lemmy, as it is now, and discovering Linux subreddits etc, they probably get the same enjoyment/attachment etc.
The redesign of Digg downplayed it’s communities and put mainstream media first (as if Kbins magazine tool was restricted to famous newspapers) and thus it immediately felt like the community had been fractured. Reddit was growing with peoples own blogs and it felt way more community oriented. This is where I think and hope Lemmy will also find its own community.

I’ve used Debian Linux as my primary home desktop since 2005 and at work since 2008. I’ve never had a job that required a Windows machine and at this point it’s a deal breaker for me.
I specifically use Debian stable. In my first decade of using Linux I wanted the bleeding edge, cool stuff, but for me nothing interesting has happened to my machine since 2015.
I just want remind everyone that Windows 11 requires your computer to ship with TPM2.0 enabled. This will complete the circuit meaning remote streaming websites can ensure you don’t have DRM on your machine.
TPM is a security token loaded into the firmware of the BIOS put in by the manufacturer to ensure you haven’t tampered with the operating system as shipped and controlled by them.
That will be nice for those websites.

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 to be enabled. With this, Microsoft and Chrome have built a complete end to end DRM to the BIOS and hardware level.
This gives the end users nothing but is wonderful for Hollywood.
High speed trains aren’t practical for local transport. In my imaginary utopia we’d put poles down the middle of roads and suspend tram carts to them. People could own them, they’d drive themselves and even have drive ways. However by being suspended in the air, and driven by electrified rails itd be clean and safe and give us space on the ground to sit, play and have large shared spaces and gardens. Plus kids and coaches could be transported without a driver and stuff. In my own imagine the possibilities are endless.
If it’s based on the timing of replies it can be fixed in an iPhone update by simply waiting a few random seconds or minutes before firing a response.

How are you going to implement any mad ideas when you essentially have to return to your full time job to survive, once giving 5+ years of salary to Ukraine? Absolutely terrible plan here.
A better plan (in my opinon only) would be to buy the properlty you want, or put the whole 1m in a pension index fund, then immediately retire, taking a 50k per year salary for life (well based on historical average stock market return). Then living in people's air bnb's across Europe and Japan contributing to FOSS projects. 50k per year will pay for education, allow you to pay into charities and make FOSS donations depending on how you live.

The TPM module only generates valid tokens it if your boot sequence isn’t tampered. That boot sequence can force your machine to validate itself with windows servers to ensure it isn’t hacked.
A hacked copy of Windows may be prevented from working when you go online.
Even if you resist TPM and WEI, if you don’t have WEI for whatever reason I don’t think you’ll be stopped from using Google services and YouTube.. you’ll probably face a shut ton more captchas and 2FA checks whilst it wears down your sanity.
