Yeah--I constantly read about how people liked reddit back in the day, or liked digg, but don't connect it to the fact that the reason why they were better back in the day was because they were smaller and more intimate (for lack of a better word).

I'm excited for the fediverse to grow, but for me it's already reached that critical mass for it to be engaging

I'm torn on defederation. In theory I like it; a user can join an instance that moderates to the level that they agree with. Beehaw is a pretty good example of this because a lot of users like having a slightly more restrictive community in order to maintain a certain vibe.

But there is a more pragmatic side of me that thinks that the average user isn't super informed about this stuff, and are naturally going to gravitate to the larger instances. No doubt there were more trolls coming from lemmy.world, but there are far more regular users that have no idea what's going on.

I think Beehaw's decision is understandable though, especially given the lack of moderation tools. They've already mentioned that they are willing to (re?)federate in the future when trolls/bots are easier to deal with.

I mean, there's a lot of content here already.

Yeah it's not the same endless dopamine drip feed conveyor belt that is Reddit, but there's plenty of content to engage with.

While steam does work, I'd highly recommend going GOG for the DRM free files

Oh absolutely--that's really the only reason I was able to stay on reddit. I do miss some of those smaller communities, but have resorted to actual forums now (if applicable), or just going without.

Shoutouts to the fiberglassflyrodders.com forums

I'm mad they cowtowed when it came to the AP courses that involved Black history--but I'd rather they be wrong before and change now than to continue to capitulate to Florida's whims.

I think the biggest problem with de-federalization is that transferring your account to another instance is impossible (or at least obtuse enough that I can't figure it out). Being able to have your account hosted on an instance that matches your moderation views is good--a lot of beehaw users like the more curated approach--but there needs to be a painless way to migrate to a new instance if the one you're currently on makes changes that you don't agree with.

Never was a huuuuuge fan of the heavy Gizz stuff (liked Murder of the Universe alright, didn't care for Infest the Rats Nest as much), but this might be a top 5er Gizz album for me. I was a little skeptical of Gila Monster when the single dropped, but I think it sits a lot better in the context of the album.

Stoked for their next album--supposedly more synth heavy, so I image the end of Flamethrower goes into the first track

Al Franken still makes me sad. The Dems are always like 5 years behind the curve in how they deal with the Republicans. All the "gloves off Dark Brandon" shit is how we should have been messaging for years but it's like the Democratic party is only JUST NOW starting to acknowledge what they're up against.

I believe that Al Franken almost certainly wouldn't have been pressured to resign if the "scandal" had dropped this year.

I really like the way Silverblue handles it--with flatpak being the standard for GUI applications and toolboxes being the standard for CLI applications

You're in for a treat. Saw them at Red Rocks last year and it was one of the coolest concert experiences I've had.

Out of curiosity, what couldn't you figure out? Haven't tried setting up an account on Lemmy, but I just created an account on Kbin in a minute and was up and running

Caldo de Costilla is a staple at my house because of how easy it is. Basically a "throw everything into the pot until it tastes good" hangover stew.

Kenji was mentioned; he has a ton of Colombian recipes since his wife is Colombian if I recall correctly. He had a recent video with another really unique and cool looking soup that I haven't gotten around to trying yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFLzI\_Tq8P4

Ah yeah--that is confusing here. I think there's a lot of UI improvements that are sure to come. For some reason there are two searches--a post search and a magazine search. The post search is the one that's visible on the top bar, and the magazine search is in the magazines tab (that lists all magazines), and in my experience is pretty good. If I search "tech" I get results from all sorts of instances.

All in all there's a lot of room for improvement, but it's such a young piece of software that I'm pretty confident it (and lemmy) will improve pretty rapidly in the coming months/years
