Switching between "Active" and "Top [1h/6h/12h]" at different times of the day has provided me with enough content & interactions to make Lemmy my new home. I always was a lurker on the old site, no comment nor post, not even an account. Now, I'm slowly trying to break from this habit. Being on Lemmy feels like I'm not shouting in the void; when a platform gets too big, you get lost in the crowd. It's always nice to see recurring usernames on different communities.

How to be a company in 2023

  1. Make a controversial move to please your shareholders without caring about your loyal customers.
  2. Don't use a proper PR team, just use the same apology template on Twitter that everyone is using.
  3. People are angry... Could anyone seen that coming? 🙈
  4. Undo some changes without addressing the root problem.
  5. ????
  6. Profit (if by profit, you mean loose every inch of respect people had about you)

Rinse & repeat, because we're all humans and we can't learn from our mistakes. Surely, this won't happen again... right?

Everyone should use uBlock + Facebook Container. It's still far from perfect, but every step counts.

Same story with Twitter users going to Meta's Threads instead of Mastodon. Most people don't see privacy online as an important matter because it's non-tangible for them. They go with the "safe/popular" option only for the story to repeat itself later...

You must switch back to English (US) after installation if you want access to Microsoft Store (and even if you don't, you probably should because most apps are now there).

I've seen a few tools to suppress most telemetry such as ChrisTitusTech's winutil or O&O ShutUp, maybe you could give that a try. Microsoft is really pushing hard Bing & Edge...

Also, as a Linux user, I must obliged to the rules and say there's alternatives out there if you want to try something new. :-) !linux@lemmy.ml

I'd say lack of marketing and higher price tags. Money / Performance ratio is also better with a decent Thinkpad.

Some of these options can't (or not without high markups) be bought and shipped to Canada.

Because it use common hardware and bought "en masse" by enterprises; they tend to be more supported with FOSS than other options.

I've been happy with my used T480 so far.

No registry edit necessary. Just use the email no[at]thankyou.com, write any password. Windows will throw an error, press continue and voilà, you can create your local account.

Rufus also has an option for local accounts and for removing TPM/SecureBoot requirements.

Saving this post for later! I got started yesterday with Miniflux and didn't know where to look for good RSS feeds. Can't have a better timing than this haha!

...and no one is surprised. [KilledByGoogle]

VideoLAN (organization behind VLC) is in France, which is outside US juridiction. The methods used by VLC are authorized/legal. Software is also not patentable there. That's why it's still up after all these years. You can learn more on their site: https://www.videolan.org/legal.html

Valve, however, must obliged to US juridiction meaning they can't do the same as VLC. Software can also be patented when meeting certain technical requirements.

Another one bites the dust. Sad to see Mojang digging their grave like every other company these past few weeks... I keep seeing MineTest poping up, might have to give it a try soon enough.

Goobye Netflix, hello Plex/Jellyfin! 👋

Good analogy. The battle shouldn't be about forcing abandonware to be opensource. We should focus on DRM, it makes games almost impossible to play when servers shut down.

OP should have compared it to other medias such as movies. When you buy a box copy, you expect it to work long after the authors/studios/etc. are gone.

The issue is about the lack of legal ways to play older games as time moves on. It will only grow bigger in the next few years with even more games relying on DRM and online servers.

Sorry, I thought it was obvious I was sarcastic about their "mistake". They want to be seen as the victims like they didn't know in advance the outcome of their decisions. Backing down on the changes only to show something "less worst" is only a way to make the pill easier to swallow. Unity cannot be trusted anymore.

I'm using a mix of Sync and Eternity. I was using Infinity for Reddit before the migration.

Because Sync came first, it's still my default way to navigate Lemmy but Eternity is slowly growing on me. I prefer to alternate between a few apps to stay up to date on the alternatives, and to ensure I don't become dependant on a single app/interface.

I've also tested a few times Photon, great web UI which can be installed as a PWA.

Windows Terminal + WSL, everything related to Xbox if you're using Gamepass or "Play anywhere" titles (Xbox/PC cross-buy).

Most basics apps are from the Microsoft app store too; calculator, calendar, paint, etc.

It's been a hot minute since I've used Windows, but you'd be surprise how much apps are now updated through that app store.

If your device use Windows in S mode, all your apps must come from the store & you must use Edge.

Why am I not surprised it's been done. Mad lad.

I paid for Tilla, it's a great app to manage subscriptions. I get notifications when the next payment is due. Pretty simple UI but that's what I like about it. You can check how much you spend per week/month/year.

It always has been a service problem. If you're trying to make it harder to access the content I pay for, I'll go right back to sailing the high seas. They must squeeze every penny out of their customers.

Pls Shigeru Miyamoto I NEED that Waluigi weenie amiibo in my collection 🥺🥺

They owe you nothing, stop sucking corporations balls. You won't be compensated for your "efforts".

Don't give Todd any idea. The world would crumble if Bethesda was to port Skyrim again.

From what I've seen online, it must be done during installation. So short answer, no.

As others have said, you could also backup your data and do a fresh installation (from a boot media, not from Windows itself just to be extra safe).

ThioJoe also has a video talking about this English (Europe/World) thing and also provide a Powershell script to delete Windows bloatware. This option could be interesting if you don't want to reset your whole installation.

A mesh system would be better or even an old router in AP mode. That's actually what I'm using to get full speed downstairs. It works really well, with no latency even for complexe things such as my Plex server or VirtualDesktop (wireless VR with my PC).

Wired is always better than wireless. You'll get better WiFi speed with AP than Wi-Fi repeater.

Recently used Porkbun for a .xyz domain for reverse proxy / DNS challenge. Price was about 2-3CAD$ for the first year, renewal at +/-10CAD$/year. My usage is pretty simple, but it's been great so far.

Almost done with Eternights. It has its janky moments but for a first game by a one person studio, it's surprisingly good!

I'm also halfway done with Gato Roboto, it's a great (but short) game where you play as a cat in a mech suit à la Metroid 🐱🤖

Maybe the web browser and going to an Invidious / Piped instance, but the experience probably wouldn't be optimal...

You could also change your DNS settings to AdGuard or PiHole. This would block ads even outside the YouTube app. Try this: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-block-ads-and-trackers-xbox

It use the same path logic as YouTube. You only need to replace "piped.video" with "youtube.com".

Ordered LE ~20 minutes after launch. Currently stuck on "Packaged items", and refreshing way too often to see the same message...

Our distributor has hit a processing backlog for orders to Canada. We are actively working through the issue and will ship your order as soon as we can. You will receive an email with tracking information once your order ships

I'm hoping this backlog won't be too long. 🥲

It's not really bad per se, it's the default on most Android devices these days. The problem is that almost all modern browsers are Chromium-based which give Google a lot of power to implement changes (see manifest v3 & web DRM). Personally, I'm trying to slowly reduce my usage of Google products. I'm using Firefox on desktop and a mix of DDG+Fennec on my phone.

Same scenario for me! My laptop only serve to have a device when I'm on-the-go, but at home, I use my desktop. It was one of the reason why I went with an older Thinkpad, it's well supported and with no dedicated GPU, it's dead silent most of the time. I'd love a 16:10 screen, but the options are pretty expensive and often not as repairable as my T480.

It's times like these that you remember how the Internet has become filled with advertisements to the point that it interferes with normal use. Not suprising to hear older folks still getting random crap on their devices when it's shown in their face every moment.

Can't complete the collection without both.

What's the theme? I tried a few but they didn't look as good. Yours seems to fit great with Gnome 40+.

I've been playing Neon White for a few days, it's been in my backlog for a while haha. I had a lot of fun replaying levels to get an Ace & gifts. I'm currently at chapter 7. The story segments are cringy, but that's part of its charm.

It's been in my backlog for a while (it just keeps getting bigger & bigger...). I try to switch genre every now and then just so I don't get bored of the sameness, but given the appreciation this received online and your comment, it's been pushed to the top of that list haha :)

Doom on the wrapper, it really can be played from anywhere. Now that's peak gaming.

I've never really though about this aspect, it's been easy for me but that doesn't mean it is for everyone. Most people I added over the years where already on Discord so it was as simple as clicking the invite button. Never had much trouble IRL too because they were pretty active on Discord and knew their discriminator, or I would simply give mine.

Even if I'm still a bit sour about the change, I can totally see why it would be easier for most people.

Anyway, my initial comment wasn't to bash you or anything. Clearly, my exemples weren't the best. I now have better outlook on this username change. Thanks! 🫠

I'm halfway through the first Witcher book. After being disappointed with the Netflix show, I had to read the original source. I'm enjoying it so far. My goal is to read them all and play the games afterwards.

It seems really dumb to play on such a device, but I've been playing a few rounds of Bejeweled 3 when looking for something in short bursts. There's a controller profile that works surprisingly well with the dpad + face buttons.

For laid back / cozy games, I recommend A Short Hike, TOEM, the Frog Detective trilogy & Dave the Diver.
