Step 1: don’t tell the whole internet that you’re trying to create a torrent site.

Honestly, there won’t be a mass exodus and Reddit will live on. I’m sure a bunch of users will flock to other platforms but in the long run Reddit only care about people that are already using their new UI and their new app. And those users won’t be leaving.

Regardless whether Reddit survives or not I am glad I found this space and excited for the future of Lemmy/Fediverse.

Yeah, I definitely agree with that rule.

I have several friends that work at Reddit and from what I gather they ran all the numbers and determined that most mods use old.reddit and not 3P apps. So Reddit did their calculations and they have determined they will make more money in the long run by steering people to their new app. They know Reddit drama always seems bigger than it is and will blow over in a month. They know they will lose some users but they think the majority will stay, including mods and content creators.

I definitely understand why they made all these decisions from a business perspective but holy shit was this poorly handled by Spez. I think they could've given developers a longer shutdown period and they could've handled PR way better + the whole Christian (Apollo) debacle also didn't help.

Fediverse has a lot of them too

At least the promise with Threads is that you can move your account and who you follow to a different Mastodon instance in the future.

I’m all for shitting on big corporations but the fact that they wanted to create a platform based on activitypub is interesting.

Adam Mosseri seems to have good intentions with Threads (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/hard-fork/id1528594034?i=1000619512224). But Zuck/Meta is most likely going to derail that at some point.

I honestly don’t care for Threads in the long run. My only hope is to follow some people on Threads from a different Mastodon instance. Whatever else they want to do, I don’t care about.

People should be skeptical but competition to Twitter is good. And even better if that product is built on the Fediverse.

I definitely don't need more reasons to eat more cheese.

This is not true. Each Instagram account has the ability to log into Threads. But it's opt-in. If you don't want to use Threads then don't sign up for it. Meta is not duplicating Instagram accounts automatically into Threads.

And yes, you can't delete your Threads account since it is your Instagram account. Threads is more a feature flag that they turn on/off on your IG account. I agree that they should make it possible to turn that feature off in the future.

Your first point is an "initial limitation".

Your second point:" This is presumably due to most fediverse services not yet supporting reply restrictions."

Not sure why you are using select quotes without giving the full context to make a point that is actually not there.

ContraPoints rules!

Arcade Fire saved me from religion and now speaks to me on a religious level. M83 speaks to me on a celestial level. Both have deepened my love for music.

I think initially there will be some limitations. And there are definitely flaws and limitations with activitypub. Maybe this will push the protocol forward to be better.

But if they really break it, why not fork it and not worry about Threads?

I think it’s funny that people think that Meta will kill the Fediverse. Just like Google “killed” xmpp. I think neither is true.

I don’t think it should be two accounts because that will break interoperability between Threads and Instagram. But having said that I agree that you should be able to disable/opt-out Threads with your IG account.

When you first sign up into Threads it will ask you if you want to follow everyone you follow on Instagram. This will allow you to follow people that are already on Threads and it will automatically follow the people that will sign up for Threads later. But you can’t tag people that haven’t signed up for Threads yet. So it’s definitely opt-in but it has a discoverability mechanic built in to make it easier for you to find people + potentially follow people that may sign up in the future.

This is simply not true. Meta is not duplicating accounts into Threads. Your Threads and Instagram account are the exact same account. You delete one, you delete the other. There is no way to create a Threads account without first creating an Instagram account. And Threads is an opt-in application so you won't have it enabled for your IG account unless you sign up for it.

I think one of the biggest issues that Reddit has with third party apps is that they don’t have control over the user experience.

I think Reddit is experimenting a lot with their app to see what works and doesn’t work to get new users engaged. Note that I said new users. Reddit doesn’t care about old users. They only care about growing and getting new users engaged.

Reddit implemented features like community chat, community voice/talk spaces, subreddit suggestions, NFTs etc.

I think it’s harder for Reddit to keep experimenting and seeing what sticks when 3rd party apps won’t or don’t implement those features.

So yeah, bottom line is, Reddit wants more control and Reddit wants new users that are engaged.

I understand why they do it. I don’t agree with how they went about it. I’m mostly upset that they think 3rd party apps are riding on Reddits succes when Reddit itself is riding on free user content/moderation/voting. It’s our content and we should be able to consume it the way we want to.

Adam Mosseri (the actual person behind Threads) in the podcast that I linked in a different comment said that’s one of the goals of Threads.

I doubt it’s going to happen in the next week or two but it seems like they are embracing activitypub.

It’s a pretty solid interview. It’s a podcast called hard fork.

Of course Adam knows how to PR and take some of the things he says with a grain of salt but he seems pretty candid.

I am kind of disheartened at the amount of people that do not understand how this works and just scream "Meta = bad".

No and no as far as I know. But why would you want multiple accounts? Just use one account and subscribe to all the communities that are on different instances. You can even create + comment on posts with your account even if you aren't part of the instance.

The only real thing that you will miss out on is if you want to create a community on a different instance. I think you can only create communities on your local instance (Unless you sign up for an instance that restricts that feature).

You are being very aggressive for an opinion based argument.

Your original point is clear, but it's just not true. Meta isn't manufacturing numbers. They just make it super easy to sign up in Threads by enabling everyone that has an Instagram account to log into it. There is really no need to create shadow accounts since you can't create a Thread account without creating an Instragram account first.

I thought the combat was going to be slow but this combat actually looks pretty fast paced and smooth!

Threads != Facebook

If you don’t want to follow people that are on threads more power to you. That’s the beauty of activitypub.

Love Fastmail! I used Protonmail for a while but their development is soooo slow and they never seem to be able to deliver things on time. Promising features that are years late.

Has anyone tried this game?
