I honestly feel like - and this is just my thought, no data to back it up - all the major companies or sites felt like they were the only ones around, there was nothing to replace them, so they could make whatever decisions they wanted to make.
Like when we all left Digg for Reddit - Reddit was already a thing so it was a relatively "painless" switch. With this one it's like... Musk took over twitter and I sort of heard about the fediverse but I'm personally waiting for Hive to get a desktop - but once Reddit started doing it's thing it was like "yeah I really need to move now" and kbin had a much better landing page than any of the other fediverse things I'd stumbled upon which really helped with the onboarding... And it's been nice watching it grow.
But yeah previous to this it was like...there was nothing else available so why did they have to care about what they did if we were "stuck" there with the decisions they were making anyway.
lol...and yet here I am on kbin so - yeah looks like that plan (assuming it's at all correct) didn't pan out entirely like they were hoping.
I don't expect it to have much of an impact on Reddit/u/spez's decision but it /does/ help show Reddit's thought process/response patterns as they take more and more draconian measures to try to "bring the subreddits under control."
I'm *half expecting - and would be amused by - them forcibly opening a subreddit and then "demanding" that "everyone go back to posting normal memes" - like the collective mob/reddit's population is beholden to their whims.
Hopefully, as each decision continues to ripple out, more and more people discover alternatives like kbin. I've been working hard to avoid reddit as much as possible but I'm getting more and more the desire to reach out to the mods of the subreddits I miss and ask them to move over here.
I remember there was a specific thread in /r/darktide that I commented on and, while I will admit that the overall topic was potentially volatile given the community - or at least possibly against the collective hivemind of 'tide players - the negativity I got in that thread continually baffled me. I'd attempt to explain and re-explain over and over again and every time it was met with this..."wall" of almost.../hatred/ that I just couldn't wrap my mind around.
One guy I swear felt like he was legitimately getting off on the hatred he was spewing - to the extent that a whole other poster commented on how messed up his responses were.
I eventually /think/ I figured out people were latching on to like a single thing I'd said in my multiple paragraphs of responses but...yeah. It was like people were only looking for that one little bone they could hang on to to be as negative and visceral as possible. It legit took me aback. And I'm only slowly beginning to realize I /don't/ feel that over here.
I've played and am a Concierge level supporter. And one who's waiting for the nascent /m/agazine to kickstart itself to life (among a few others filled with tumbleweeds and sadness :( )
I love the game. I find it highly immersive. And oddly calming - I'm a trader and running the shipping routes with the sound of quantum quietly thrumming in my ears is soothing in a way that listening to the ocean is. That being said I'm not playing atm but that's mostly because trading has been bad for a while and I'm waiting for improvements. I'm waiting for the Railen (I feel like that's going to be my primary ship once it launches) and I'm waiting for Pyro - because I feel like with a new system we'll have more trading outposts and that should hopefully help balance out things.
Also what I'm very keen to see is the introduction of NPCs on ships. I've been toying with the thought for a while but it will drastically change the balance of the verse once any and all ships can hire on NPCs to man previously abandoned Turrets.
What will be really interesting, at least to me, will be the Connie. Dangerous enough on her own, if you can hire three NPCs (one per turret and one for the snub) she'll be an incredible pocket-carrier/force multiplier in a "relatively" small package.
lol, so yeah. That's what I'm interested in. But I really want to get my hands on the Railen. The interior picture of it is literally my work laptop background.
8700k/3080tI/64gigs of RAM. lol, I need to upgrade my processor but she's solid enough to handle the game even with my G9.
I've /thought/ about the eye tracking stuff but haven't looked into it yet. Given that I consider the G9 basically on the edge of VR (my monitor wraps around my head vs wrapping around my eyes) that may be something to look into. Also I've thought about getting at throttle. I use an ergo setup? Logi MX ergo - which I oddly really love for spaceship control vs a "normal" mouse, but I've really been on the edge of getting a throttle just for that last little bit of control. Especially if you're making Cargo drops over and over again and landing on moons all the time.
But yeah...I haven't quite pulled the trigger on the eye stuff but that's mostly because I'm currently not in SC atm (waiting for a couple things to come online for my gameplay loop and have other "toys" to buy on the backend [-.- and a CC to get down after the toys I buy -,-])
The big thing, if you're trying to get into SC though, is the RAM. You /need/ at least 32. 16 is technically playable but upping to 32 (SC runs on my laptop too which has 32RAM) makes a huge difference. That and having it installed on an SSD.
I don't want to go back. I miss my subreddit - hell let's be honest, I miss /Reddit/ - but... Seeing how spez has acted and treated... /everyone/...
Like... We used the site, we provided the content, and the conversations, and the knowledge, the info, the jokes, the memes... That was all us. And it's like... I dunno he wants to eat his cake and have it to. He wants us there both for the content we provide as well as to monetize us and in a way I get it but it's like... ... When reddit was just the background... "the background" you didn't really think about it so much, you know? But it's like when Elon took over Twitter suddenly it's not just "Twitter" in the background it's now "Elon musks Twitter" and it's front and center and sleezy and scuzzy and you just want to not be a part of it anymore.
That feels like reddit now. Like how spez has been acting just makes it all feel dirty and horrible.
And I /miss/ reddit, I miss my subreddits. I miss googling any random idea and aphending reddit to the end of it and not even thinking about if it would show up on there because you just knew it would. Like it wasn't even a question... And I /miss/ that. So much. ... But it's like... /tainted/ now. I hate seeing reddit results from Google searches now.
And learning about how federation works reminds me of reading shadow run back in the day and how the matrix worked there with little nodes of info all talking to each other. In a way, then, the fediverse, to /me/, feels like the future...
So I'm willing to stay here and wait for it to grow and comment a little more than I ever did on reddit. Because I don't want to go back. And I don't think we should.
