Help my girlfriend move into my place \o/
Yeah, using a 9 year old work laptop as my home server. Then with the surging energy prices last year I decided to switch out that laptop with a raspberry pi 4 as server.
Conclusion: I now have a laptop and a RPI running 24/7 🤦♂️
I recently wrote a blog post about the new NAS I built myself and why I didn't choose for a RPI 4. https://jeroenpelgrims.com/diy-nas/
I think it terms of price it won't be much more expensive than an RPI NAS, but you'll get more performance and stability.
If you don't care about power usage and/or connecting stuff through USB you can also buy some older hardware instead.
Same for me.. After getting a new laptop we were supposed do deliver the old one to a recycling centre.
My first work laptop from that job served as my home server up until last month or so (about 8 years).
My second laptop I kept after quitting the job. I was also supposed to deliver it to a recycling point.
I quit that job about 4-5 years ago. I'm writing this reply from that 2nd laptop right now :)
Seems like a better use of resources than having it scrapped. I don't really consider it stealing, but I do get it's probably not 100% legal either.
Both laptops are Lenovo's.
I've been eating this as breakfast as well for probably over a year now. Can't say that I've been enjoying them because the taste is pretty bland, but they sure are healthy and help a lot with digestion.
I make them super bland though, just rolled oats with double their weight in milk.
Before I added some maple syrup to give it some flavour, but then I tried to reduce calories in my meals and this kind of stuck.
Yeah I usually mention that whenever I mention Zoho, guess I forgot it this time :)
I'm very happy with them, but every time I need to add a sending email alias I'm looking through 3+ places to find the right one where I can do that.
Ah so your setup is almost exactly as what I had planned :D (I'll use 1 SSD instead of 2 though, to be used as boot drive). I haven't made the box yet, probably in a few months.
Thank you for the reply!
Please do post your updates somewhere in this thread, I'm sure they'll come in handy when I start building my box.
"Ons moeder", which translates to something like "Our mom".
With the idea that if the robot cleans half as good as my mom does, the house will be clean enough to live in.
Traefik can't serve html itself though, can it?
It can route requests to a web server, but it can't serve the files itself iirc.
This Stack Overflow post seems to confirm this: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/46503797/is-there-a-way-to-serve-static-resources-with-traefik
I've also been using Zoho for a couple of years now and am quite happy, especially considering the low price.
The only annoyance I've had is how many menus/pages they have in their web admin. Always takes me a while to find the right page where I can add an email alias to be able to send mails from or to generate an app specific password.
This is interesting since I was planning on making my own RPi4 nas in the near future. Am I seeing correctly from the image that you have 1 (or 2?) 3,5" HDDs connected to some kind of HAT for the RPi (which has SATA connectors probably)?
What speeds are you getting now?
My plan was to connect 2x16TB HDDs to the pi through a USB->SATA cable, which probably is an even less stable setup than yours is but I was hoping it would be enough to do some basic NAS stuff.
I was also planning on using OpenMediaVault like you are.
Pretty funny that coming from a Norwegian because they still have the flag out many places in my opinion :)
It's actually one of the things that stuck out the most after I had moved there.
Especially at "hytter" (vacation cabins) I think the majority has a flag out.
Same for national day, you'll see a bunch of flags.
Compare that to Belgium, where I'm from. Even on national day it's a rare sight to see a flag.
And it's only very fanatic people that will actually wave it around on the street.
The moment you'll see most flags out is probably during the world cup.
I've been using Zoho mail for a few years now with my own domain linked to it and it works flawlessly for less than 12€/y. (less than 24€/y if you also add the domain cost)
