The illusion of Privacy is Mastodon (or social media in general)

There's a reason why when you go to "private mentions" on Mastodon, this appears:

While yes, we should be able to delete our content if we want, but it's a bit naive to think there could be true privacy in any decentralised social media platform.

There's a reason why one of the think people tell you when you come to the fediverse is not to share personal and sensible information.

The only decentralised social media that has some level of privacy is Matrix, and that's why it has it's own protocol and only federates within/between its own servers.

Cool things on Firefish/clackey, that Mastodon and most of it forks don't have:

• Quote notes (Misskey and Akkoma, a fork of Pleroma, also have them)

• Antennas. They allow you to add words, tags and accounts to lists and create parallel timelines that you can see whenever you want, without having to follow this accounts

• You can create personalized timelines for certain accounts to appear in.

• It has a drive section where you can upload files.

• Channels. This are public local group that the members of a server can create, join and interact within.

• Private chat groups. Local only.

• Emoji reactions

• Clips. These are collections of notes ("note" is the name post receive in Misskey and Firefish)

You can create multiple clips and manage them by giving a name and description to each. You can also choose to make your clips public to make them available to other users.

• You can create custom web pages. For now they don't federate.

• Customisable (by admin) character limit.

It's not the responsibility of one instance to get the threadiverse into a "self-sustaining population"

Specially when say community is:

• Comprised mostly of marginalized people.

• not completely open to registration, but requires your solicitation to register to be approved by an admin/mod

• choosing quality over quantity, and has no intention to grow so much or to become a Reddit replacement.

There are more than 300 instances on Lemmy alone (to that you have to add the kbin instances, of which I don't know the number)

The problem here, and what really is stopping any kind of growth, is the lack of distribution. People are going to the same 5 communities and expecting them to be responsible for all the content creation (by hosting communities/magazines), when part of federation is the ability for every instance to have their own community for a topic.

Well the fediverse works. The fediverse is what internet was meant to be, before corporations sized it and made it the nightmare that centralised social media is. The "metaverse" is just Zuckerberg's desperation to maintain his decadent model of social media afloat.

Any server that federates with threads, a product of Meta a company known for their low quality moderation and lack of ethics, is clearly not a well maintained/moderated one.

It's not a new rule. The admin is just applying the sites rules as they are, instead of making exception for threads as many of the techbro admins that are getting their servers excluded have been doing.

They're so accustomed to centralised social media that allows them to troll and bait without caring for the people in those platforms, that, when, they find instances here, like Beehaw, that do not want to have contact with people and instances that promote that type of attitude, they feel confused and betrayed.

They expected the fediverse, Lemmy, Beehaw to be a replacement for Reddit, not only as content/link/information aggregation platform, but as a place to continue acting like they acted on Reddit with no consideration or understanding that they aren't in Reddit anymore.

The fact that many are calling Beehaw admin/mod team "snobby" "snowflakes", etc just says it all

The great benefit here is that, because the nature of decentralisation and federation, even if bigoted people exist within the fediverse, they are in their own isolated instances and we never see them; while in centralised social media "the algorithm" is designed in such way that we are forced to see bigoted posts/people

This makes the fediverse much safer for and attractive to queer people and other marginalised groups

Do you really think Meta wants to be "one of us", that they plan to be on equal ground as the rest of the already existing instances managed by individuals and not by corporations? Are you that naive?

Beehaw's registration process is quite easy, asking you only to write a few words on why you want to join (which could just be "it seems like a nice instance"), in comparison to other registration processes I've seen and done.

I've been through registration process where to guarantee that you've read the rules and anything required would hide words in the post containing that essential content and then asked you questions of which the answers where those words. Sometimes with the addition on asking you why you wanted to join.

Beehaw didn't left the fediverse, it defederated from two Lemmy instances over the more than 20000 that exist in all the fediverse. The number of instances that Beehaw defederates from (which, of course, is bigger than two, as there are intances that are globally defederated) is tiny in comparison with the size of the whole ActibityPub -based fediverse.

Make sure you understand how the fediverse work before resorting to lying.

Defederation is not toxic, it's an essential tool. The ability to choose what kind of contents and account you can see is one of the best part of decentralised social networks.

I mean, there had been news about reddit forcibly removing mods and making private subreddits go public again, so I don't know how many of the subs actually left the protest.

The point of federation is that you can create community with people all over it, no matter what software the server they joined is running.

Mastodon being too big to the point that 90% of it users things it's the whole fediverse is not positive nor contributes to create an stable community. Many people coming from twitter run from the fediverse, because they're told there's nothing other than mastodon, which they find hard to use, lacking and extremely toxic.

Misskey, Firefish, Akkoma, GoToSocial, Microblogpub, etc give people other options that may fit their need for/usage of a microblogging platform better than mastodon does, as each (including Mastodon and each of its forks) has it's own "profile"

No. Some pets do have dietary restrictions. This dietary restriction can be permanent or momentary, but they do exist.

My youngest (in age, and also the last in being adopted) cat, who had lived three years on the streets until she appeared at our doorstep, came not having eating well (or at all) for who knows how much time (she was malnourished) to the point that she couldn't tolerate the food my oldest cats ate, so she was prescribed special food for her, so she'd have an easy time adjusting herself to eat everyday ones again (or for the first time, as we don't know if she ever had a home before, or if she was born in the streets). Regulation of user registration and defederation are key to the fediverse, not against its purpose.

The purpose of the fediverse isn't to be a replacement for any centralised social media, it's to be a safe alternative free of corporations and bad actors (who are isolated in their own servers). If you just wanted a Reddit 2.0 maybe a centralised alternative would have been better for you.

Whatsapp is so big here that it's not just that everyone uses it, you are practically require, forced, to use Whatsapp.

I think you're mixing up the people that take part on thread of communities hosted on Beehaw (who belong to hundreds of servers, both in and outside of Lemmy, not only to Beehaw) and the registered members of Beehaw as an instance. I'm talking about users registered at Beehaw.

Beehaw has the largest communities because people aren't creating communities on their instances, instead recurring to Beehaw-based communities. But there's a difference between participating in Beehaw-hosted communities and being part of Beehaw as a instance, a register user of Beehaw. This is not the responsibility of Beehaw, which is closed to new community creation. Federated social media is made by its users and here users have the opportunity, the possibility, and the ability to diversify Lemmy and the bigger fediverse by creating communities in other instances and participating in the communities that already exist in other instances.

Beehaw as a instance aims to be a nice and safe space, and as such attracts marginalised people to register into it. Yes, there are people that are registering in Beehaw without even reading what the instances is about, only because it's a big instances. These are the people that are now "feeling betrayed" or "unable to understand" why Beehaw is defederating from instances that allow trolling. They chose a community that wasn't the best for them, but I don't put them as fault because, just like it happened with the twitter migration, people are being suggested the larger instances and aren't being explained that being on a smaller instance also allows you to federate, sometimes way better than in larger ones that are often blocked/muted/defederated by small(er) instances for simply getting too large.

So content needs to be kept even if the account that posted it exist no more. The contain remaining when the account gets deleted is a feature, because otherwise important information could be lost.

Maybe it's because I have experience in the fediverse but I specifically searched for an instance like beehaw, joined knowing what they were about and what kind of behaviour they allowed and which they didn't allow, and expected them to follow through and respect their own rules and guideline.

I'm not disappointed nor I'm surprised. This is what I signed for and how I expected the admins to conduce themselves and the instance.

I choose the fediverse over centralised social media owned by corporations and billionaires because instances with administrations like Beehaw's, that do not accept nor promote shitty behaviour) exist here. Because here it's easier to avoid people who only want to troll or cause controversy than it is in sites like Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, etc that facilitate that kind of negative interaction.

Reddit had/has the same problem. It's just that federation makes it way more obvious on the threadiverse.

Copyright should protect the artist, not corporations. But it's become a business, with companies made only for the sole purpose of (sometimes falsely) claim copyright of works.

We can see this with videos being copyright strike when they were making clear use of "fair use", or when some years ago there was an issue with channels about Classical Music having their videos taken down for copyright claim coming from a company that alleged to have the rights over different pieces (not the performances, that are protected by copyright), but the piece itself, from different eras/centuries (20th and 21th century compositions are protected by copyright, 19th, 18th, 17th, 16th and 15th century compositions are not)

There also have been cases of an artist/author losing the right to reproduce their own work after getting out of a contract because the publishing house/music company got full right on their work. Sometimes getting to the point that the artist couldn't perform because the music company had the right to the image of the artist.

So, how can copyright be shaped in a way that upholds the right of the artist, but doesn't allow for any kind of corporative abuse to exist?

Basically, Lemmy communities and Kbin magazines are federated as groups to the micro and macroblogging fediverse. People in friendica, mastodon or Firefish can interact with Lemmy and kbin by mentioning a community/magazine in their posts and following them the way they do with other types of federated groups (like guppe, chirp, friendica forums, etc)

Pixelfed didn't have federates group support, meaning that its federation with the threadiverse was bad, not to say practically non-existent. Supporting federated groups and even having its own type of group will allow people on pixelfed to interact with Lemmy and Kbin the way other fediverse software do: following them and tagging the community/magazine handle in posts.

short summary: It means better federation between Pixelfed, and Lemmy and Kbin.

I think Calckey/firefish, because of it history and characteristics, tends to have more themed instances. Many of the so called "general" instances, are multi-topic or multi-fandom themed instances rather than actual general purpose ones.

I think someone not used to these things would see ‘Coming Soon’ and just leave it as not launched yet.

It's probably not launched yet. The main instance hasn't open (or rather moved from calckey) and other intances are moving from either old Calckey or foundkey.

Firefish has already set up a new site and infrastructure under their new name. The flagship instance of Calckey.social is in the process of moving over to Firefish.social. The migration effort is intended to retain users, posts, credentials, and data. The move is expected to officially happen over the course of the next few days.

I would say to wait at least a week to check the official instance.
