They don't care about cause and effect, they are just angry and dumb.

Next year is going to be worse. And the year after that even more so. And it will continue like that for decades, probably centuries.

Even if I could tolerate dumbasses who don't think CO2 emissions (and destruction of multiple natural CO2 sinks) are the driver of all this, it's still infuriating that they don't seem even concerned that the world is getting hotter and more deadly and are focused on some nonsense topics that no one in their right mind would give that much of a shit about.

I just want the GOP to get absolutely pummeled for once so we can move the overton window back in the right direction. No I don't like the dems. Yes I will vote for them every time as they represent the closest to what I want.

A couple people recommended Fedora spins but I'd recommend just sticking with the big distros (that have up-to-date graphics drivers readily available - so not Debian.) A lot of the gaming-focused distros are only saving you a few terminal commands and increase your risk of running into issues; they're good, but they may not be as 100% stable as you'll find in major long-running distros like Fedora or Mint.

I have settled on Fedora with KDE Plasma. Here's basically everything I copy pasted for gaming:

# install steam, discord, nvidia drivers
sudo dnf install https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm https://mirrors.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-$(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm -y
sudo dnf config-manager --enable fedora-cisco-openh264 -y
sudo dnf update -y
sudo dnf install steam discord akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda

# install bluetooth Xbox driver
sudo dnf install git dkms
cd /tmp
git clone https://github.com/atar-axis/xpadneo.git && cd xpadneo
sudo ./install.sh

I also had to enable Legacy X11 App Support through the settings gui so that Discord could receive push to talk presses without having focus.

Yup. Realistic result of things becoming automated is that we have several decades of social strife grappling with the fact there's too many people for the amount of human labor actually needed, until there's enough possibly violent unrest for the powers that be to realize "oh, maybe we shouldn't require people to have jobs that don't exist "

There is a tool library near me and it is $45/yr. It's amazing. These are really good services and this comment section has no idea what it's talking about.

I pay Google for Google domains (shutting down, being transferred to somewhere) and YT premium and they didn't tell me either of these things.

I have been using KeePass for eight years. Used to just shuffle the file around with Google Drive, now I have it sync'd with Syncthing across a few devices. I use its notes feature to store associated data like S3 keys and it stores my SSH key and KeePassXC can automatically add it to an SSH agent.

I don't really have any complaints about it.

As of the last few days I've been trying out Linux gaming for the first time, and the prospects seem really good. ProtonDB suggests all games I care about are native or run fine and I've tested several, and I was able to use bottles to get an old MMO I play running incredibly easy.

Only thing I really have to dual boot for is Valorant.

Personally I just want more trees and for big mega parking lots to be ripped out

Very sadly we just aren't in a climate for third party candidates to do anything. I would suggest getting involved with ranked choice voting advocacy groups if you really believe in it.

The venture capital free money train is gone and they're realizing their revenue models make zero sense.

Iirc he didn't even get 'too excited' he just had the mic too close to his mouth.

It worked for me last year. Put 5% on a home near a major city, purchase price $425k

Some areas like LA are just a special kind of fucked, but you don't have to live there.

$1,000/mo in savings is pretty difficult for most people.

$300/mo, invested earning 8% for 40 years, does get to a million though (10% rate of return + 2% interest safe assumption.) This is as $60k/yr job, contributing 3% to a 401k with an employer match, not something that's particularly rare.

I know prices are high and people are hurting... but there's a lot of people who are just not really trying.

Avoiding corporate software companies and abandoning established communities on principle isn't something your average person does. Also, wrapping your head around the Fediverse, even if the sign-up process is as simple as other platforms, can be an obstacle for most people.

Unironically iTunes

Works for me, running about 30 containers. The Philips hub has recently been replaced by a Conbee II

Very interesting! Also methane, of course. Should have shorthanded to GHG.

The relationship to your lender is very similar to a renter’s relationship to their landlord

Is it though? Landlords typically have hot opinions on what you do with the property. Banks don't care so long as you don't literally destroy it. When I rented I felt stifled in things like modifying my place, adopting a dog, painting walls, etc. Owning my place feels a lot better even if it costs a lot more.

I get what you say kind of from a financial sense but even then it's radically different. You can pay extra every month to get a mortgage finished early. Each year you get more and more equity and are in a better financial spot. When a lease renews your landlord has the option to say "I want more money, so you have to pay extra now" or just straight up refuse to let you live there anymore, and at the end you have nothing. And a foreclosure is a much lengthier process with more outs for a homeowner than an eviction is for a renter.

They legitimately do think they know more than NASA. At least your average conservative voter. Conservative politicians probably believe at least some of the science but deny it to keep getting voters. Conservative voters think climate change isn't real because it still snows in winter and people who have studied climate their entire lives are just part of a conspiracy to take away their trucks.

That's a pretty frightening belief. Earth is just some bus stop your soul sits at waiting for heaven, so why take care of it and why fret about all the suffering that takes place on it.

For all we know, death may be total end of your soul/consciousness/whatever and Earth may be the only place with complex life in the universe. And we're trashing it.

Same reasons here. Also, if you regularly watch Youtube on smart TVs/streaming boxes, etc. it's just the most hassle free way to not get ads there.

Bing's copilot is genuinely pretty good, the AI answer is often pretty accurate and the way it's able to weave links into its answer is handy. I find it way more useful than Google search these days and I'm pretty much just using it on principle as Google is just pissing me off with killing their services, a few of which I've used.

I don't think Microsoft is some saint but copilot is just a good product.

Well, I bet they didn't lobby for fossil fuels at COP28.

Docker cp piped into restic, uploading to wasabi. Works well, I recently recovered from a hard drive failure and everything just worked.

A nice email from Google explaining that would have been lovely.

I loved the puzzle dungeons of the previous games. The shrines feel like just puzzles, with no real dungeon.

Yep. Used to be my fiance's college laptop.

Vikunja has become my whole life todo list app and I throw server stuff on there too. I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

Related to OP's question: is it possible to have the 1B boot from something other than an SD card?

I ran it as a PiHole for awhile, until it chewed through two SD cards. I'd like to use it for the GPIO functionality but I don't want have it randomly crap out again.

$61/mo actually.

In Linux it is possible to turn the screen off after a timeout and keep the system on with the lid closed.
