The special power supply is a complete and total deal breaker for so many reasons. that eliminated so many use cases for me. And the lack of a standard hdmi port (or even usb c video output) is just the shtty cherry on top.

That's a great instinct to have in the current landscape, but keep in mind the rise of machine learning is happening. And there are a few really cool and good use-cases for it. So it might be a hindrance to yourself to automatically throw out anything to do with "AI", you might find something cool to use it for.
For instance, as a hobbyist graphic designer, I use a local instance of Stable Diffusion these days instead of Photoshop to make quick photo edits, saving me hours of manually masking out objects and filling in the blanks.
I've been doing this exact thing!! and it's refreshing to see this attitude on Lemmy, which generally seems to really really hate giving the creators of the content they consume any money. People here act like they're entitled to free content and piracy is some moral obligation. Piracy is and should be just a little bit shameful. it's not like it's evil or whatever but you're not supposed to be proud of doing it. Bflix, Sflix, Putlocker, soap2day etc etc etc. we've come a long way from the Limewire days. i used to have a whole Plex server and hundreds of files with subtitles, box art, descriptions, all hand curated over 100s of hours. Now i just use free pirate clearnet streaming sites
it's because it's literally the only non chromium browser that's a viable alternative. At this point there are literally just 2 options for browsers: chromium based, Firefox based. That's pretty much it.
if you want desktop icons just configure and install something to do that. that's the best part about Linux is that your distro literally doesn't matter, it's just a good starting point to jump off and customize

which distro did you end up on? I started 2 weeks ago with Arch (bad first choice, but i learned a lot), moved to Ubuntu (seemed way too bloated and hard to customize), then PopOS (worse than Ubuntu), and now I'm moving from Manjaro back to Arch. I think that's where I'm gonna stay now that i know how to fix it up and use it.
The only thing i miss from Windows is Adobe, everything else is so much better on Linux. I love how i can customize literally anything and everything, and if i need something specific i can just make it
