The researchers believe it affects all VPN applications when they’re connected to a hostile network and that there are no ways to prevent such attacks except when the user's VPN runs on Linux or Android.

Once again, Linux with a win!

Even without being a programmer, associating Free Software with a MASSIVE purchase is bonkers.

Using gentry as a slam indicates he views himself as royalty. Gentry is defined as "people of good social position, specifically the class of people next below the nobility in position". FUCK SPEZ!!!

When I say "don't think of a panda", what do you think of? Pretty much the same thing with saying "don't recommend me FOSS options" lol

Apparently, if you go through the "privacy" settings in Windows and turn everything off, it still collects more data than KDE with all telemetry turned on 🤯

I'd recommend https://privatebin.info, https://toptal.com/developers/hastebin, or https://rentry.co. All are open source and awesome replacement options. PrivateBin is a software package you download, while the other two are webapps.

More like doing whats best for everyone, which sucks for it to be considered shots fired...

Since Fedora is upstream of RHEL I'd like to think it'll be unaffected from the move. But only time will tell

I don't feel like anything is wrong with systemd, but options are apart of what makes Linux so awesome.

With the original Beeper app you made an Apple ID through Apples website to use for setting up iMessage. This does require folks having the email in order to use iMessage, so definetly worth setting up an alias. It still works, while Beeper Mini doesn't apparently.

There was one earlier this year or at the end of last year which provided invidious links for YouTube post, but then I stopped seeing it around. Apparently now there's many bot's being utilized or will soon be from the sound of it.

Word is Microsoft quietly killed Cortana, so Windows has that going for it now!

It's anticipated to slow things down unfortunately

I'd argue for a basic use case most distro's would work well, right? All come with a browser, a PDF reader, and some word doc/spreadsheet program. I truly hate using windows at school, so I just plug in a USB, restart, and boot from the USB. Otherwise Firefox always needs updating, which results in freezing 1/10 times, and I need to make an adobe account to simply read a PDF.

It's really just a PR way to say the pilots are on the same page, as far as I see it at least.

QKSMS has been great over the past year and change I've used it. Simple, clean and customizable. Simple SMS Messenger is another solid option as well.

Ya, implying recommending FOSS options is an involuntary action was tongue-in-cheek.

The influencing aspect here is almost certainly tied into the drop of search engine efficacy recently. Big tech finally collected enough data from you and everyone you know to now be able to alter what answer you find for the question you asked. Wildly, this same question now generates different results depending on the profile they've assigned you. MullVads Total Surveillance paper published last October highlights this explicitly. This is why data collection matters, not due to ads, but the ability of Big Tech to change how you view the world. Your data impacts the search results you see, as well as everyone similar to you...

Edit: Here's the link to the MullVad paper https://mullvad.net/pdfs/Total_surveillance.pdf

Kubuntu or Mint are great distro's to begin with when starting your linux journey. It's good to know down the road these should really be moved on from, but they're great to get the ball rollin for sure!

Nobara is a great gaming focused distro, it's a fork of Fedora by a well-known Red Hat employee.

You can pick what search engines are sourced, which is fanatic, and it's fully anonymous. My preferred instance is disroot's (https://search.disroot.org) as they are a super trustworthy nonprofit in my book.

Linux runs on will power!

Curious why you'd choose closed-sourced apps when there are phenomenal open-sourced options which accomplish the same tasks? The list of trackers for CamScanner alone is wild, I'd expect most of the others to be similarly invasive too.

Edit:

  • Snapseed: 0 Trackers
  • Glasswire: 0 Trackers
  • 1DM+: No Exodus Report
  • Accubattery: 6 Trackers
  • AppOps: 2 Trackers
  • Bouncer: No Exodus Report
  • ACR Call Recorder: 2 Trackers
  • CamScanner: 18 Trackers
  • Clipboard Pro: 2 Trackers (cost $2.99)
  • DiskUsage: No Exodus Report
  • HiBy Music Player: 5 Trackers
  • MiXplorer: No Exodus Report
  • MX Player: 18 Trackers
  • Nova Launcher: 2 Trackers [Lynx Launcher is a much better choice for this list]
  • OfficeSuite: 12 Trackers
  • RAR: 0 Trackers
  • ScreenMaster: 4 Trackers
  • SD Maid: 1 Tracker
  • Wavelet: 0 Trackers

Would Linux not be a better call? Both upfront and maintenance cost would be much lower without question.

Local, that's what's so rad about it!

You may want to dual boot, especially if your classes are online. I've seen issue after issue using a Windows VM for online exams. But, for me it'd be worth asking a buddy or using the computer lab to get around an invasive OS as your daily driver.

I know www.open-assistant.io was looking for help from anyone to put the final touches on their AI a little while back. Haven't kept up recently but it'll be a solid option once live.

If you enjoy KWrite & KolourPaint, give Spectacle a go for screenshots. Works amazing on my end and it's built into most KDE OS spins along with KWrite and Kolour. While I know the name Flameshot, I've never actually needed it as Spectacle is solid!

You support concepts which average Americans despise entirely. It's not surprising when the stuff you & your "friends" aren't supposed to say aloud, then do, are quickly retracted. Open your mind or leave the rest of us to suffer. Seems like you've made your choice already though

Based on my understanding, Fedora will be unaffected but Rocky & Alma are in some hot water along with Scientific Linux. RHEL is based on Fedora while the others are based on RHEL.

Use edit & retract the first part of the first sentence! There's quality simply in the extent of time it's been a workable alternative for ya!

While this is all news to me, the biggest difference seems to be that MarkNote allows for rich text notes. I'm curious to know what I'm missing, cause I'd think they could have just added this to KleverNotes.

I use JabRef which is another open sourced bibliography tool. I use it regularly and truly have no clue what I'd do without it at this point!

It's about subbing to anything in your wheel house and sorting by new. That's the only way it made since before the migration and still does. At some point it wont make much sense, but not quite yet.

Classic example of judging a book by it's cover I guess. The fact big tech is embracing open source software more and more, you'd think this assessment should no longer be the case.

You'll want to use the terminal and run "sudo dnf upgrade". If there's any issues after that, just run "sudo dnf distro-sync" to ensure everything's using the final release repo's. The sync command is strongly recommended but not always necessary.

Standard Notes is the downright best notes software, highly recommend it as a OneNote alt!
