they'd never do that. then they'd be killing the housing bubble as well. think of the investors!

we have phones that don't break easily and we can repair them and replace the battery; with long-term support.

what we need are laws that makes it mandatory for all.

ah yes, because sailing the high seas was only a trend and had nothing to do with how much actual content netflix offered originally.

with less on netflix. the split to all these services. and themselves cutting their offerings. how the hell do they imagine people won't look elsewhere?

talk about bad decision making process lol.

it was already made public in the lawsuit some weeks ago that they are indeed slowing down youtube for firefox.

discord literally having a concurrent controversy (the name change); and they feel it good to go there?

besides. discord is useless as a reddit replacement. discord is not indexed and you cannot retrieve the data publicly; much like facebook groups which would be the same thing. i mean; who doesn't (or didn't) use +reddit in their google searches for the past 2 years?

discord has also been bleeding users lately.

and, it's another corporation. worse than reddit. with a poor track record.

but sure! let's move to there! sounds brilliant! i'm sure all will be well!

...what's next, facebook groups?

bs. discord is absolute trash for anything but live chatting. it does nothing different from plain old irc with a bnc and bots. they just took irc and made it easy for stupid people to use and slapped voice comm on top; which also already existed. using it as an archive, broadcast and support system is like trying to use a hammer to screw in a screw. people just use discord because people use discord. just like people just use facebook because people use facebook.

if you want to manage a community, you should use discourse. it's the most modern alternative. if you want a public chat, use any chat you want that supports public chat, the only difference between all of them is what level of privacy they provide.

eh? do people still use reddit even? last i heard they have employees actively create threads now to try and keep engagement going.

Linux Mint is hands down the most stable linux distro out there and has been for years. zero tinkering needed. everything just runs no questions asked.

My only grief with Mint is the most recent update where they changed the software centee and now it's slowed to a crawl. Why they would do this is anyones guess.

I'm recommending MX until such time that Mint sort their crap out - unfortunately I doubt they will, seeing as this change of software center was to resolve some other issues they (but not is end users) though they had.

MX is basically debian but with a lot of improvements. Sure it might have a bit of a learning curve for those primarily used to Ubuntu based systems, but it beats running any of the other Ubuntu distros by miles since they all struggle with the crap Ubuntu puts on top of Debian.

Manjaro is another great option if you don't want to deal with debian based stuff, and KDE is the default DE with most stuff under reasonable control. You can also use all the Arch resources if you ever run into trouble so it's a lot less of a headache than what I've experienced running OpenSUSE (i want to love OpenSUSE but I just can't).

nonsense, it's not like microsoft, google or apple is logging every input you do and scanning your shit at every turn!

it still amazes me that the whole globe is paying R&D taxes to microsoft, a private foreign entity, instead of, you know, what R&D taxes are actually supposed to be spent on. is it even legal?

Been waiting like 3 years for them to start selling their laptops to the nordic countries.

Still waiting...

i think he stopped working on groups because mastodon officially announced groups shortly after gis preview. not that they have delivered it yet (release target, q4 2023 - an no word for 2 years now).

buddy from the US moved to europe. kept whining about his local pizza joint. I assumed it was just crap but eventually asked what was wrong with it, "The pizzas got these weird ass names like Capricciosa and they are absolutely covered by toppings. WHERE IS THE BREAD?!?!"

agreed. but chats are there to keep in touch, collaborate, and communicate. so we don't have much of a choice, especially since most people just don't care about security and stick with Messenger or similar. in my circles though, it's a lot easier to convince someone to use Telegram unlike one of the many XMPP clients, and seeing as it runs natively, it's my only real choice.

personally, I'd be all over DeltaChat if it wasn't running on electron. brilliant idea for sure, as there would be no convincing necessary to keep in touch with practically anyone on the planet.

our taxes goes to fund resources and development. and a large part of those taxes goes directly to microsoft so our governments can maintain windows and office installs instead of developing a public solution; its a problem because we aren't actually getting anything from the taxes that goes to microsoft; which, unless you live in the US, is practically illegal unless specifically hiring a domestic corporation to supply the product (good ol' privatization).

oh sure. big bad china gonna get us. meanwhile, the US keep fucking with us over here in europe and breaking our laws in the name of american private enterprises.

but yes, europe should really stop relying on foreign corporations for vital infrastructure, and yet here we are, laws being broken, national security thrown out the window, and no one cares.

if you create a fresh new unlinked tiktok account and start swiping, most content will be vaccine propaganda, jordan peterson, and right-wing rhetorics.

they should, especially as a smaller business, as data leaks could run into GDPR problems. my ex-employer, for example, handled all customer data in plaintext and never delete data for people who were no longer customers. he also insisted on using non-secured channels for business related information/secrets. and zero backup systems. malware ripe for the taking lol. had one system crash and he went mental but refused to accept a backup solution. absolutely no understanding of IT and deaf to any recommendations because of fear that he'd be unable to replace me with a cheaper employee once i was done setting everything up.

three years later, three employees later, and the cheaper replacements were unable to do anything anyway and it's all broken now. but i'm sure in his mind it's all my fault.

so yes, they don't, either due to incompetence or to cut corners. but they definitely should.

at least you get to use whatsapp. i happen to be bound to the only two countries on the damn planet that near exclusively use facebook messenger for everything including corporate business support. i'd take whatsapp over facebook messenger any day.

of course, i'd take neither given the choice. but still.

i've been pushing mint for years because it truly is just that good. everything just works. easy to learn. lots of easy customization available by default for even beginner tinkering. there is no headache or issues with drivers, patches, or software, ever.

but unfortunately (most recent versions) have become more prone to heavy slow downs and the new store in the latest update is utter trash.

not even "still on facebook", since 2020, the surge of people moving TO facebook instead of away of facebook has increased tremendously.

the traditional second hand market sites are dying because facebook marketplace is taking over.

traditional websites and helpdesk/support channels are dying because companies are switching to facebook pages and messenger/whatsapp.

old school forums have more or less been entirely replaced by facebook groups.

alternative chat platforms have more or less died because of messenger.

branding is nearly gone everywhere and has been replaced by instagram.

the list goes on.

and imo the worst part is, facebooks policy and technical offering is inferior to the alternatives people are moving away from. and the only reason everyone is moving to facebook is because everyone is moving to facebook.

--

the day Mastodon offers Groups, I will be advertising the move to Mastodon and shortly shut down the groups I run. Though, Groups was supposed to be out already last year and yet we're in 2024 and nothing is happening. If they had managed to stick to schedule it would have been a golden opportunity because a lot of people were looking for alternatives (but found none), when facebook went ham on their policy. but as there was no alternatives, everyone's back on facebook just circumventing the policies (for now).

almost every hobby has moved to facebook and it's the same damn thing. utterly useless for the purpose people try to use it for.

i don't know what the fuck is wrong with people, but this is definitely one of the pinnacles.

Photopea. Not foss, but a free clone of photoshop.

people who like fast apps should care because like 99% of current software developers are building electron apps instead of giving us something that actually lets your high end computer behave like a high end computer.

the only modern chat application that doesn't run electron today is Telegram.

the only cloud note taking app that doesn't run electron is ...uh. doesn't even exist.

the only...

i can't even think of something i use that was released after 2016 on my computer that doesn't run at a crawl because of electron. fuck electron.

closed source.

plain text unless activated.

not at all. mint offers a bunch of features 'exclusive' to mint as an integration with their system. of course it's all open source and you could install it on any other system. but the key important factor with mint is that everything 'just works' with a fresh install, no customization necessary - which is something that can't be said about any other distro, including Ubuntu. it is the only distro i recommend for non-pc users as there is no chance they will brick it.

regardless, KDE is just a DE. you won't get the same mint experience of course, since it isn't officially supported (and indeed, only cinnamon offers the complete mint experience), but installing KDE on mint is easy enough if you insist on using it.

Zorin is designed to be a Windows replacement, but my personal recommendation is LinuxMint. Sure it's not trying to be a carbon copy of Windows, but it's designed to be easy to learn, stable, functional, and support pretty much everything from the get go (just not bleeding edge), with a readily available store that lets you download everything you need (that isn't already included in the install).

Yeah, even if searching content is atrocious, and it focuses on the latest posts by design (like reddit) so you have the same questions posted multiple times a day. And the tool doesn't even support the goal of the users. It's still a more appropriate tool than discord. Plus, it has the userbase.

an online store could operate from places where such laws don't apply. most people nowadays mainly do their shopping online anyway and physical stores have largely disappeared unless it doubles as a warehouse. i guess australia and NZ has the advantage of stringent import laws though.

but i suppose this goes for my earlier argument as well.

fairphone is doing pretty well. their new one is quite competitive spec-wise too.

obviously the meme is trying to be as unflattering as possible as proof that american pizza is somehow superior. in reality american pizza tries to maximize profits whereas european pizza is a food dish.

he doesn't actually have his wealth. it's estimated stock value; which would cascade to nothing the minute he tries to extract it. all he can do is borrow with stock as leverage; which would net him a lot of money sure; but there is no way they would approve billions in a loan unless he is very very specific on the investment goal.

There are currently a wave of people moving certain activities to Band of all fucking things (using it side by side with facebook due to facebook policies). It's basically a shitty korean clone of facebook but slower and with less stability and even less features.

They could have picked ANY of the platforms actually designed for the intended purpose. But Band? It's the OPPOSITE of useful.

People don't make sense.

tying up in assets such as property, land, etc. has real value though. you can sell a huge amount of land without the land losing value because of the sale, but you can't sell a huge amount of stock without the value collapsing while selling it off.

any exposure is good exposure. investors don't normally run away just because you earn yourself notoriety, they usually do the opposite - because the market is entirely made of make belief and fairy dust.

he isn't the richest man in the world. his "wealth" is stock. not actual money. and he can't actually use that for anything but leverage.

he is small fry in the world of the actually rich; people just give him the limelight because of notoriety.

using cinnamon. and yeah base software is largely fine. but non-base productivity apps are largely built in electron. cinnamon even offers a webapp tool so in some cases i can at least avoid it.

both use Electron (which is the problem and why Telegram is literally the only modern option on the market) so they aren't options either. If Electron wasn't a problem in and off itself, I wouldn't use either of those anyway since I could use DeltaChat, be secure, and not need to bother to "convert" anyone to use the client since it's literally a chat client built on the email protocol (which everyone on earth has).

electron slows everything on your computer down (by design). for each individual electron app you're running concurrently, you're burning another huge volume of resources and sacrificing performance that normally would have been shared. even well-optimized electron apps can't do anything to avoid this due to the inherent design of electron. because each runtime of electron has to load all its junk separately from one another. it's a burden on your hardware that developers just don't give a shit about because electron makes it easy to push out apps with minimal coding effort and let you ignore native platform support. if they did give a shit they wouldn't use electron. electron basically makes a flagship computer behave like a 90ies computer due to lazy convenience of the coder. i'd propose that any developer who opts to us electron can't be trusted because they obviously don't care (or know) enough to develop real software. almost every electron app is basically a patchwork put together from various github sources and frameworks.

regardless. even if i wanted to use one of the privacy focused applications despite electron, i would have a total of 0 users to chat with, making the chat app useless. people want their modern features and are beyond willing to pay with their privacy. so not only does telegram offer a non-electron native client on all platforms. they also offer all modern features and design elements users have come to expect.

and as said. if i had to pick one chat application i'd prefer over anything else. i'd go with delta chat. since i wouldn't need to convince anyone to install it and still be able to chat with them. but it's unlikely the delta chat developer will rewrite it. heck, most of the actual interface is just another lazy copypaste. so, i do me.

there is only really nheko in development among the non-electron alternatives and it's unstable. can't convince people to use software that only works half the time.

mobile is not the problem for many reasons. one being that apps offload so there is no system wide slowdown like you experience on a modern high end computer, caused by electron.

all those protocols only offer shitty electron apps on desktop.

i have a top end m1 mbp and it can handle 2 electron apps running concurrently at best. i won't even install electron apps anymore because i need to be able to actually use my computer for work. which is a bit ironic as most modern utility applications which would be useful for work can't even be used on most computers unless run as the single active app (great workflow, lol!).

i don't see the problem. just don't make your browser available in france? there's only 3 browsers to pick from anyway, firefox, safari, or chromium-based. if everyone makes themselves unavailable in france, what is france going to do? heck, iphones only have safari. the people would be pretty quick to burn down paris (as is tradition) when the web becomes unavailable.
