In short, no. To explain: you have a bunch of beneficial bacteria living inside your digestive tract. These little guys help you digest your food, and in return they get a free meal. This basically means that the food you eat ferments into poo. Fermentation always results in gas being released (think how the plastic wrap on a bowl of dough can puff up as it proves.) So to sum it up, unless you drank a strict water-only diet, anything you eat can give you gas. (Even then, you would probably still naturally swallow some air with the water, and some would make it to the other end as a fart.)

There are a lot of communities across the fediverse based off of r/196, where the only rule is that you have to post something before leaving. I ended up blocking most of those communities because of the spam.

Not to get on my socialist soapbox, but we’re so tired and exhausted from work that we don’t have the time or energy to make friends and other connections. The only relationships we really have are romantic ones and even then it’s basically only allowed because it makes more babies to eventually exploit.

So my advice to you is this: don’t worry so much about romance. Try and cultivate relationships online and in person. If you have friendships that will increase your happiness. Plus you will then have a pool of people who share most of your values, and one or two might emerge as romantic partners.

Unfortunately money makes the world go round. Part of the meaning of “no ethical consumption under capitalism” means that no matter who you are, no matter what kind of service you employ, no matter what you try and do for yourself, somewhere along the line capitalism comes in and causes someone to suffer. It’s pervasive and insidious.

If instances are completely supported by user donations, that’s great. But they will never match the billions of dollars that corps can toss around.

The only real way to prevent corporate influence on anything is to abolish corporations and/or capitalism. In the meantime, though, we as users can take steps to mitigate their influence: discuss proactively, agree to defederate at a moment’s notice, and server admins can refuse bribes/offers/etc.

Hi from Lemmyworld 👍

Dating sucks. For every nice person you meet and make a connection of some sort with there’s three or four who drop off the face of the planet. I get it’s easier to just ghost but it’s pretty shitty. (And this is speaking as someone with social anxiety who has definitely ghosted before lol oops)

Some do, I’m sure, just like some humans get addicted to it.

There was a community on the old site called 196, where the only “rule” was that you had to post something before leaving. It leaked over here because of a few splinter communities here popping up on the All feed, but if you look closer most of those posts will be to various 196 communities.

In other words, it’s not actually an enforceable rule, just one of those social things that pop up.

I don’t have an issue with social media companies entering the Fediverse, at least on the surface, because it’s ultimately more users and it’s in line with the ideas of free exchange of information and content. My problem with it comes in when they try to buy instances, communities, or what have you. No one should have a monopoly on the Fediverse, and it shouldn’t be pay to win.

So, my answer is this: because no one can stop anyone from making their own instances, users decide whether to defederate their instances from Meta’s, or Twitter’s, or anyone else’s. Join an instance that doesn’t federate with Meta, or start your own if you have the know-how. Just like anywhere else on the internet, you don’t have to interact with content you don’t want to interact with.

I am not a microbiologist. However I do know that bacteria are pretty resilient, and most pathogens and parasites can live for at least a few hours outside of a host. Plus your skin is really not all that smooth at a microscopic level, there are all sorts of little nooks and crannies to hold onto.

Drowning wouldn’t really be a concern for them, imo, but additives like chlorine are specifically meant to be disinfectants.

Kbin kbin kbin kbin my friend

I read a toot about it last night when I was very tired. Apparently there is some sort of (anti-)privacy protocol in universeodon’s source code that is getting implemented to Masto main source soon.

I wasn’t able to find the relevant post, but I do remember that it can only be disabled by toggling ‘Discoverable’ under account options. Evidently Eugen said something along the lines of “it’s what people expect from social media” but the point of Mastodon was to be a divergence from traditional social media, no?

“Science” isn’t a monolithic entity like a deity is. It’s simply a belief in the natural cause and effect of the universe we live in. In other words, science is merely a way to describe and explain our world, derived from repeated observations. When people say they “believe in science”, it’s not blind worship- the idea is to present findings and observations in such a way that anyone could theoretically replicate the experiment, given the proper equipment.

On the other hand, faith is the opposite- “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (“Religion” is a system of hierarchical institution based on spiritual faith or beliefs, btw.) Scientists ask questions about the world, and strive to find the answers, but religious folks are content to let those answers simply be “because God”.

So, to disbelieve in science- rather, the scientific method- is purely a rejection of reality. You can, in fact, reconcile spiritual beliefs with scientific truths to an extent but ultimately, learning more about science leads to its own kind of spiritual understanding and beliefs that tend to reject religion. This is upsetting to diehard religious folks because hierarchies demand constant subjugation of inferiors, and to reject that “place” in the hierarchy is an act of major rebellion in and of itself.

Hello! I’m trying to transition away from smoking myself (I use medically and recreationally) because smoking is bad for your lungs, but nothing really beats the instant relief from smoking some flower. I personally haven’t tried one yet but I’ve heard a lot of people use a dry herb vape to some success.

If for example you’re on lemmyworld and they defederate from Threads, you won’t see any Threads content, even if you sub to people on, say, kbinsocial who boost Threads content.

If you view those same profiles from say, shitjustworks, and they haven’t defederated, you will see all of their content plus the Threads content.

Nothing wrong with browsing how you like, but apps are usually more accessible for mobile.

I am on Instagram which quite frankly is more than enough for me, thank you.

So far I’ve been using Mammoth and Metatext. I like them both but Metatext is edging out at the moment.

Pros of Mammoth: *Plenty of customization options *Nice interface *Translation features

Cons of Mammoth: *A little clunky *Some trouble uploading pictures *Custom emoji/emojos don’t show up (on my phone at least)

Pros of Metatext: *A bit smoother *Nice interface *Custom emoji appear

Cons of Metatext: *No translation options (that I’ve seen) *Some errors when starring posts

Both are pretty decent apps, but once I get around to updating my iOS I will probably try a couple others on for size.

I’m actually pretty interested in pixelfed, but for now I have three new social media I am trying to learn (kbin, lemmy, mastodon.)

I mostly have instagram as a means of communication with a few key people. It’s also kind of my anchor into “mainstream” social media.

I like microblogging but I prefer a text-first approach; I generally try to avoid using it other than as a messaging app. Lately I’ve been posting a lot on my side account (which is just pictures of my pet snails.) When I do scroll on my main I like my friends’ content (their selfies and art) and I follow a few of my favorite personalities as well (drag queens, local restaurants, Bake Off contestants, etc.)

It took me a minute

Correct me if I’m wrong but if individual admins allow their instances to be indexed wouldn’t the instance itself have some sort of metadata identifying it as a Lemmy branch?

Probably uses the Lemmy API to detect which instance you’re logged into or you log in directly when prompted.

Built in HUD for sure. It would be great if I could just check how I’m doing like a Sim. I need an inventory. Let me change my party members

We say that we as humans have “higher reasoning” but most of, if not all of, our reasoning is predicated on animal instincts. People are capable of thinking through their actions and emotions and such, sure. Those same people also don’t always do so. How many times have you or someone you know let their emotions get the better of them, even if they are “aware” of them? That’s not really any different from a spooked horse running off or a hurt dog trying to bite the person trying to help.

“Higher awareness” is much the same. In fact many animals have senses far greater than ours (like a dog’s sense of smell) or which we lack entirely (like sonar.)

All mammals at least have similar brain structures with the same general set of glands and functions. Even the way humans think and feel and reason is different from one another, but we can still identify core emotions in one another. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that just because animals don’t experience the world exactly like us, doesn’t mean they don’t have similar feelings and reasons for feeling those things.

Even back on Reddit I tended to call them groups, communities, fora, etc. Sublemmy is a cute word but I’d hate to have to say it to a nonline person, and I feel like it gives Reddit too much sway if we just migrate all the terms to this new space

I think it’s supposed to be a lemming. I imagine its name is just Lemmy, tho I call him Lem for short. Honestly though any small rodent is going to look like a rat or mouse to me (and I love animals lol.)

There’s this idea that things will just “break down” in the garbage but in reality past a certain point in the landfill heap, there’s too little oxygen to fuel decomposition. And that point keeps rising…

So theoretically you should be able to make one account and view a majority of content. This is barring of course any instances or communities defederated from your home instance.

There’s merit in making a community for your interest on your home instance even if you’re subscribed to it on a different instance, for reasons like outages and a diversity of content. Lemmy being bigger than other instances just means there’s more content available here, but if you like the layout of kbin or Mastodon or what have you better you can still see it all.

Plus, just because two instances are federated doesn’t mean the users actually see all the information exchanged. You have to actually opt into it which is cool- ie if an instances particular community is problematic you can just block it and sub to the rest.

Edit: got so wrapped up in my TED talk I forgot to mention- I’m currently trying out Lemmy, sh.itjust.works, and kbin.social until I can settle on one (hopefully kbin gets an app soon lol.)

I think for now it’s working as intended. There is an unprecedented amount of new users, after all. I imagine that over time, probably by the end of the year, communication between instances will be much more seamless once bugs get squashed

Glad I could help!

Someone recreated that community here!

I think this is another feature that is being worked on, but at the moment there are a LOT of features being worked on lol.

I’ve been using and enjoying both. I’ve used Lemmy way more because it has a public API which means mobile apps. Kbin is a bit more to my liking and it’s great on desktop, but it regrettably doesn’t have a public API at the moment. Mastodon is okay as a Twit stand-in but having to brute-force a feed is a learning curve.

You left them in the door?

I really like the sense of optimism and camaraderie here. I hope it lasts! I hated posting and commenting on Reddit because people there are downright vitriolic.

I wouldn’t stress too much about it, friend. If you’re really stuck just make an account on a Lemmy instance- there are plenty of apps in dev, there is a sizable user base, and it has a good layout.

I would also recommend making an account on kbin and Mastodon, though, just so you can try different layouts. You should be able to view and subscribe to any federated content, but those instances have different posting styles and vibes you might (or might not) like better. Once you have a handle on where you might like to settle you can simply deactivate your extra accounts.
