What is your definition of stability? I have used Arch for about ten years without any major breakage, but sometimes you do have to do some manual tinkering if a package stops working. So it's stable enough for me, but maybe not for others. Since it is a rolling release, packages are generally being updated quite rapidly.

I think that any modern rolling release distro would fit the bill though.

A P1 sensor. I have recently entered the rabbit hole of home automation. One of the things I care about, is to be as private as possible, so I went for Home Assistant.

A P1 sensor is a small thingumabob that you plug into your electricity meter and it measures electricity and natural gas use. It comes with its own webserver and it integrates seamlessly into my HA energy dashboard. I did not have to subscribe to any cloud service and as far as I can tell, it does not phone home.

Hard disagree here. My daily driver is a 5 year old Motorola phone here that cost me a whopping €159 back in 2019. It is fast enough for the things I do with it. If I'd bought a flagship phone by then, the OS updates would have stopped long ago (but things appear to have improved since).

I don’t think the BBB has a lot of momentum left either.

I wish I was as optimistic as you.

What kind of society or culture considered being friendly towards children a red flag? Spoken as both a father of two and former child: you can be friendly to children without being a creep.

I have bouldered for a few years and will agree with the friendly atmosphere.

My vote goes for J.S. Bach. One of my shower thoughts is that he would make a great experimental IDM artist. He would give Authechre a run for their money.

Having lived in both, I prefer the big city. Aside from numerous reasons already mentioned in this thread, I notice that big city people are more open-minded and more diverse. Being slightly different for whatever reason is more of an issue in a small community.

It somewhat sounds like 'Ace of Spades'. I am a bit old school. If I hear the name Lemmy, I am reminded of Motorhead.

Football (soccer for Muricans), both as a participant and as a spectator.

Many moons ago, I worked in a building that was next to a truck garage. On a hot summer day, a truck limped in full of animal entrails. One of its axles broke and the contents of the truck spilled all over the place, just in front of our entrance. In the sun. It was only cleaned up after several hours and the smell lingered in our office building for literal months, as the air circulation in this building was almost non-existent.

The smell itself was comparable to a very strong blood smell with a metallic, copper-like undertone.

Godzilla. The 1998-ish version.

YES! He's a massive idiot too.

I insulated my own house despite not being particularly skilled (to say the least) and absolutely loathing DIY.

A bit more context. I live in a house that was built in the early 70s. When I bought it back in 2009, there was hardly any insulation and due to the way it was built it was draughty and cold. A few years ago, I had the walls insulated, which made the major rooms a bit warmer. However, the house was still cold, part of the problem being the crawlspace and concrete floor. Last year, I got all the debris out of my crawlspace and put a thick plastic film on the sandy floor. That had instant effects: not only did the humidity drop (and some occasional musty smells), but we also needed to use less natural gas to heat the house. This year, I finished that project by insulating the bottom of the concrete floor with thick rock wool. That job took me several weeks. First, i had to glue wooden slats to the bottom of the floor and then I had to apply the rock wool.

My DIY skills are poor. I did this alone. It was a hell of a job which I do not intend to do a second time. However, the rewards, both in terms of comfort and savings are great.

As a fellow Dutchie: I miss the early 90s optimism. Nowadays, people are disillusioned and the hidden bigotry among which I grew up has become explicit up to the point of us having a fascist government.

I also miss not living in a neoliberal dystopia.

I am not sure that both are not connected.

I started running some 20-odd years ago. It helped me get stability and self-confidence and helped me get my shit together.

Phil Collins's solo work is mind-numbingly, eye-bleedingly, toe-curlingly boring and awful.

I bought a Tuxedo two years ago. They have affordable (and highly configurable) Linux laptops, some of which are aimed at gamers.

I upvoted you, but you are not entirely right in my opinion.

Not all classical music is created equal. I am quite convinced that if J.S. Bach had lived today, he would make music like Squarepusher. However, somebody like Gustav Holst would probably be in some kind of doom metal or progressive metal.

Excellent decision! I wish you many healthy and injury free kilometers!

Rami Malek comes to mind. If I am not mistaken, he is Egyptian, so not your typical Hollywood white mail.

As a random dude from the Internet, I am proud of you! :-)

Physical. I love the smell of paper.

I do occasionally use a Kobo, which is a very convenient little device. However, I prefer a paper book.

Early 90s eurohouse and/or hiphouse. I listened and still listen to many genres, but the kind of music I refer to, is not even worth being a guilty pleasure.

I use Lemmy and Kbin simultaneously. I prefer the term 'Fedditors', which I recently read in a similar thread..

"Mof". That is the Dutch equivalent for "Kraut" as in the slur for "German". My grandparents lived through the second world war and went through some traumatic experiences.

Ecellent choice! My personal choice is "threads" from their third album.

I have several actually:

  • As mentioned earlier: Portishead - Threads. Actually, the whole album is perfect for a certain desolate mood.
  • The God Machine - Picture of a Bleeding Boy
  • The Cure - End
  • Joy Division - Komakino
  • Nine Inch Nails - The Wretched

Another vote for Vampire Survivors. It feels like a game that has given the developer so much joy to make.

+1. I am an avid runner and on running days, I wear briefs. On rest days, I prefer shorts.

As a motorcyclist, that's a definite yes. On long trips, it is the wind around the helmet that is one of the most tiring things. Custom plugs allow the rider to hear traffic while being shielded for wind noises.

A good friend of mine has concert plugs and he swears by them, but that has been said earlier in this thread.

You may have got me there. It was overhyped. So. Much. Merchandise. It drew people to the cinemas too, at least where I live. I do not remember whether it was actually praised though.

BTW: I hated the sound track. Anything with Puff Daddy or whatever he tries to call himself nowadays should not exist. Most lazy music ever.

That sucks. Back here, the company that maintains the electrical grid actively stimulates the people to use such sensors. All in the name of saving energy. There's even a page with vendors on their website.

Same here.

At home, me and the wife try to split chores as evenly as possible. When she was struggling with burnout, one of her problems is that the house explodes into a mess, thanks to two children. One of the advices she was given by her therapist, is to block a few minutes a day for the entire family just to do minor cleanup chores. The mess remains, but it feels a bit more manageable now.

Confetti's, T-99, King Bee, 2 Unlimited, Quadrophonia, LA Style, To be fair, even at 14 years old, 2 Unlimited was too cringey even for me.

Take a look at Group-Office. It has a community edition that is self-hosted and a paid professional edition. You can either self-host or host in their cloud.

Full disclosure: I am one of the developers.

Dutchie here: tobasco style hot sauce.

The God Machine. They were a shoegaze band from the early 90s. Sadly, one of the three members died, so they never got big.

I have a friend who makes his own piña colada. He always makes way too much of it, so occasionally the odd bottle ends up in my liquor cabinet. I am normally not too much into sweet drinks, but I absolutely love that stuff.

I hate that kind of not-invented-here syndrome. The project I am helping develop is partly open source and has its own server-side framework, its own ORM and its own typescript based framework. Community-wise we are dead in the water, because nobody wants to adopt to the own frameworks.

Incidentially, I used OpenERP5, which is an early predecessor of Odoo. I hated the interface with every fiber of my being. Due to some custom development, we were not able to upgrade to more modern versions.
