But I think I'd miss my dogs way too much.

I imagine a lot of people would end up like homelander. Only playing the superhero role to get likes or feel loved but being very evil when no one would know.

Personally, I think I would give the superhero thing a go as I do like helping people, but very likely I'd end up like Red Son or Injustice Superman. It would depend on the powers and if other supes exist, but it is very believable to end up going to extremes to just try and make the world a "better" place if no one could stop me. What's a few lives here or there when you believe you are saving so many more?

Fuck, I wish my company moved that fast. I'll likely be dealing with trying to get hundreds of systems upgraded or replaced to Windows 11 sometime in 2028q4. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ At least it gives me some time to breathe. We just finished our last upgrades to Windows 10 last year. 😢

The problem with this take is that you are assuming there is a potential job or hours there to begin with that never existed in the first place and never will. Walmart has always had 15 checkout lanes and only two cashiers, even before self checkouts were a thing.

I guess you have a private chauffeur because you wouldn't want that person to not have a job due to you selfishly driving your own car around.

And how many porters do you employ to carry you around all day. I know you wouldn't want to cost any of them their jobs by walking around on your own two legs.

As technology advances, some jobs are going to disappear, but hopefully, those new technologies also add new jobs that didn't exist before. Back in the day, it used to take a whole lot of people to harvest a field. Now it's all done by one guy and a big tractor or two. But people need to build those tractors, program the controller, repair them as they break, etc. More kiosk and self checkouts are going to need techs and repairs. It's just how things work. It probably won't be long when some store switches back to using actually staff because it's a unique feature when no one else has human staff anymore. Like how people buy Amish furniture now because it's like the only way to get handmade furniture today.

Saying to leave a mess so a company "has" to hire a janitor is just a dumb way to express the idea that there needs to be more jobs.

I get the fear that if automation keeps picking up, there may be a time where there truly aren't enough jobs to go around, (A.I. is really fucking scary at how fast it is improving) but hopefully if technology advances that far we'll also see improvements in agriculture, housing, and power generation to the point that people don't need a shitty $15 an hour job or a "free" paycheck just to not starve to death in the street because hopefully providing clean water and food won't be as hard as it is now.

Universal basic income is just a dumb idea. You are taking money from someone who works hard for a living, making life harder for them, just so someone else doesn't have to work for a living. It is the core concept of communism. What happens when no one wants to work because they can just get the free income? Did your teachers really never do the average grading experiment with you? Instead of getting the grade you actually got on an assignment, everyone just gets the classes' average grade. No one should fail, but at the cost of a few good students getting worse letter grades. It lasts for one or two assignments before most people just stop doing the work and now everyone is failing because the few people that are still doing the work can't get high enough grades to average a whole class of zeros out to more than Fs.

If it's something you are really concerned about, then really try to find a solution that doesn't involve forced labor on one group of people, so another group can benefit. Our ancestors did that shit for years back when it still took people to harvest a farm, and most people are still pretty upset about it to this very day.

Completely ignoring that a lot of guns are used for hunting and even more are used for sport (hey, just like a baseball bat). Guns are a deterrent and an equalizer. They increase a person ability to defend themselves and others from threats stronger or deadlier than they would otherwise be able to face or defend against.

I don't know who you are, but let's pretend you are a 4'10" 100lbs girl that lives in a small 6th floor apartment. What do you do to defend yourself from a 7' tall 280lbs man that just kicked in the door to your apartment? Do you grab a gun and try to put as many rounds as possible in his chest or do you just sit in the apartment and let him have his way with you until the police show up and then continue to stand outside because they think it might be too dangerous for them to actually help you? I mean, what if the man has an illegal gun? Imagine! A criminal with the audacity to have an item that you, a law-abiding citizen, are not allowed to have because they, as you put it, are only used for violence, something criminals are known to not take part in. 🙄

Guns are the best defense against someone or something that is trying to do you harm. That's the reason it's so high up on the Bill of Rights. Because life, liberty, and justice are only possible if you have the ability to stop someone from taking them from you. It's like our forefathers knew what life was like to come from a place where you were nothing more than a peasant and everything you had and were could be just taken away if the person with the shiny crown wished it or some back alley ripper would stab you dead for your pocket lint alone.

Also, sports is a secondary usage for guns. They were developed for violence.

Violence was pretty much the only thing contributing to human advancement until about the 14th century. Funny enough, the first gun was made around the 11th century.

More than TWELVE times, the number of people that die from guns, including the suicides. Almost 4000 more people die a year from just living in a country with smokers than those who die due to gunshots.

Really let that last sentence soak in! 41000 people died not because they chose to smoke but because other people then themselves decided to smoke near them. Only around 38000 people died from guns in 2019, and out of those around 23000 of them killed themselves, I can only assume so they wouldn't have to put up with people like you that are really going to try and skip around all this other information just to try and take away people's right to defend themselves using the best tool for the job.

Guns aren't safe. They aren't supposed to be safe, or at least they aren't supposed to be any safer than any other tool. They are a tool that is very specifically designed to grant their user an increased ability to injure a target with ease from a safe distance. This ability grants the user an increased ability to hunt, to defend themselves, to defend their property and family, and yes to harm or kill other people and predators.

A hammer, a knife, a blunt object, and a car can all provide these same abilities with differing efficiency, but we still have them, too, even though they aren't necessary. You don't need to drive. Walk or take a bus. You don't need a hammer to drive nails. Use a rock instead. Although there is a famous story about a guy named Cain, that makes a strong argument for getting rid of rocks, too. No one needs a baseball bat. Those are only used for recreation, so it should be easy to get rid of those dangerous weapons, right? I'm sure we can get rid of those dangerous knives, too. Our ancestors didn't need them to survive, so I'm sure we can do without them to make the world a safer place.

This is why we have a rule that none of these things can be used for that thing about killing other people under threat of harm or death unless it was done under pretty specific circumstances.

You are statistically safer around a gun than you are around a ladder, but I'm guessing ladders aren't on your list of things to rid the world of for some reason.
