Another, unrelated, example of the shift in thinking in the Dutch government is about an unanimously adopted motion in the House of Representatives. Last week saw a major storm, and the fire department send out an emergency text warning to people, urging them to check Twitter for the latest updates. However, this coincided with Twitter preventing people who do not have accounts from viewing tweets, resulting in people not being able to see emergency service updates

In mid-May 2023, the home of one of Kolektiva.social's admins was raided, and all their electronics were seized by the FBI. The raid was part of an investigation into a local protest.

Why are houses being raided over a protest?

To be fair, r/all would always have tons of NSFW posts before reddit started filtering them from the front page ~2 years ago.

Of the top five, sh.itjust.works seems to be the best. Definitely the instance that I would recommend to new users.

Please tell me what I can get on usenet that isn't on PTP, BTN, or RED.

I would bet that 99/100 releases are uploaded to private trackers before usenet.

Well I would recommend it since it works, hence the name, shitjustworks lol.

In all seriousness, you can't start a new platform and simultaneously expect to exclude large segments of potential users. Shitjustworks seems to toe the line better than other instances. They ban spam/bots while still allowing most content.

Generally, I recommend avoiding the top two instances if you are considering creating an account, and I would recommend avoiding beehaw for other reasons. So that leaves you at shitjustworks.

if you can

Everyone can.

I got in via an interview for what.cd, way back in the day. The interview process is still a viable way in for those willing to put a bit of time in.

Big fan of letsencrypt’s certbot with the nginx and cloudflare (or other dns providers) plugins.

Is there any reason to use caddy or traefik over nginx?

I don't understand the big push to defederate from other instances when individual users can block instances as they please.

I host from home but have a 10gb uplink.

Fuck outta here (as i cry in american)

Swizzin is definitely the most prominent solution for selfhosting a seedbox. I highly recommend it.

How does a nonprofit offer stocks?

Short answer, they are for profit now. It is complicated, but they are able to raise equity and sell shares.

  • The OpenAI Nonprofit would remain intact, with its board continuing as the overall governing body for all OpenAI activities.
  • A new for-profit subsidiary would be formed, capable of issuing equity to raise capital and hire world class talent, but still at the direction of the Nonprofit. Employees working on for-profit initiatives were transitioned over to the new subsidiary.
  • The for-profit would be legally bound to pursue the Nonprofit’s mission, and carry out that mission by engaging in research, development, commercialization and other core operations. Throughout, OpenAI’s guiding principles of safety and broad benefit would be central to its approach.
  • The for-profit’s equity structure would have caps that limit the maximum financial returns to investors and employees to incentivize them to research, develop, and deploy AGI in a way that balances commerciality with safety and sustainability, rather than focusing on pure profit-maximization.
  • The Nonprofit would govern and oversee all such activities through its board in addition to its own operations. It would also continue to undertake a wide range of charitable initiatives, such as sponsoring a comprehensive basic income study, supporting economic impact research, and experimenting with education-centered programs like OpenAI Scholars. Over the years, the Nonprofit also supported a number of other public charities focused on technology, economic impact and justice, including the Stanford University Artificial Intelligence Index Fund, Black Girls Code, and the ACLU Foundation.

I run my own instance and the one thing I will say is that I don't see as much content browsing all on my own instance versus all on lemmy.world. Not sure why that is.

Oh man, now I'm even more jealous.

I really like ansible and have played around with using it to deploy a seedbox. I still want to get it working, but I've given up on doing it all purely through ansible. At this point, I'm thinking the best route is using ansible to deploy swizzin with an environment file and unattended install

I didn't know that. Thank you for clarifying.

The download speed on any popular release will max out even the fastest connections. I assume the retention for less popular content is a lot better on trackers, but I don't have enough experience with usenet to say that for sure.

Torrents can be encrypted as well, and there isn't a need for a VPN unless you use public trackers, which I don't recommend.

What is the monthly fee for Usenet? I'm more in favor of decentralized systems with the use of seedboxes to speed up distribution, but I'm not against usenet either.
