Hopefully migrating to @thegiddystitcher@lemm.ee , come find me there

Ok so TLDR for people who don't quite know what this means.

Beehaw are going for a walled garden approach and cutting off our access to content from some of the bigger instances. This is fine, it's their right as instance admins and it creates a safer space for anyone who was only browsing Beehaw local communities anyway. It's best they've done this now before even more people join, but it does suck for those of us who already built a nice feed.

As users we now have a decision to make. If you're an active member of a community on one of these two instances, you'll probably need to migrate your account.

If you're an active member of a community on another instance, bear in mind if that instance grows large you may then be in the same position.

The bad news is there's no easy way to migrate accounts here like there is on Mastodon, and we're going to have to resubscribe to everything all over again from whichever instance we move to. Unless anyone knows any handy tool or anything?

(p.s. It seems like I can still click through to my communities on, say, lemmy.world but presumably they'll no longer update. This is going to really confuse people as there's no visual indicator that the community is blocked from my pov)

I'm on Beehaw and managed to join this one ok. I think there's a delay when the first person tries to search for an instance, before it actually shows up in results. Not ideal but maybe try it again now?

Honestly it is a bit weird, yes, but you do you 😄

I never did Twitter so can't say what's different about Mastodon. But I have two accounts there for two separate main interests, crafting and gamedev.

On both of those accounts it's just a nice way to see what other people are up to within those topics, share my own projects, and generally meet new people and get into conversations around our shared areas of interest.

You can do that here on Lemmy too of course, this just lends itself better to longer in-depth discussions while Mastodon is better for more casual chatter.

I like them both and am happy with my life choices 😄

I'm hoping for some specific craft communities, but for now it makes sense to huddle together in !creative@beehaw.org. We do love to show off pics of all our projects though so I expect it won't be too long before it makes sense to start splitting that up.

That's true, but tbh even with quite a techy background I looked at what's needed to do that and noped out. Hopefully we'll get to the point where you can just buy pre-made instances from a host, that would do a lot to mitigate some of these issues I think :)

They look great! Love the idea of a unified theme 🐝

The easiest way is to search for hashtags and click through to profiles that look like they post interesting stuff. You can also check out https://fedi.directory/ where there are suggested accounts to follow for all kinds of different topics. If you've not made an intro post there yet, do that too with the tag #introduction and any other tags you're interested in, that way people will come to you!

Also what kind of crafts and do I already follow you there? 👀 lol

It's a whole new frontier! :D

Kbin seemed to be pushed more on Mastodon than Lemmy was, during and in the run up to the blackout. Lots of people giving new things a go this week, even from places other than Reddit!
