With no context, completely in isolation, yeah Overwatch 2 isn't the worst. But for a lot of players, it's not just about what Overwatch 2 is, but also about what it did and what it means. That factors into players' feelings about the game.

Yes but the advantage of Linux over windows is obvious. It's open source. Where's the advantage of FreeBSD? Companies can make their own proprietary fork and give nothing back?

I agree that it's better than the "open core" model because it limits by time rather than space, as they say, but it kinda misses the point of open-source software. The conflict of interest is that they effectively want to be the only ones who can profit off the software, while still benefiting from the free work of others, but commercial-use is within the open-source definition.

My real issue is that it seems like they're trying to spin it as a kind of "open-source", but it's not. If they were more up-front about that, I probably wouldn't care as much.

Also saying that it's less restrictive than copyleft is just outright false.

Number 3 is by far the most important, because most people just don't think about what web browser they're using. A lot of people don't even think about web browsers at all. They just think of the web browser app as "the internet", and that's it.

The idea is that you're not supposed to minimize windows at all under Gnome's workflow, and you maximize by double-clicking the headerbar to save space. You get used to it.

free-riding

If you're gonna have that kind of attitude, then you don't really care about user freedom.

I second the recommendation. I know a lot of people don't like the browser (although I find that a lot of that dislike comes somewhat misleading rumors or stories) but the search engine really doesn't have anything to do with the browser except that it's by the same company. I often switch between it and Duck Duck Go, and I don't use Brave browser.

For a 100% libre kernel, I feel like this is the more sensible option than Hurd, just to take advantage of all the effort that goes into the Linux kernel. I'm not knowledgeable on kernels in the first place though, so maybe a micro-kernel really is the best way to go once you figure out the proper architecture.

There's many different reasons (all of them ignorant or blatantly made in bad faith) but one that I recall off the top of my head is that, since Linux gives users more freedom and more control over their operating system and computer, playing on Linux makes it easier for you to cheat in games. They like that in Windows, there's parts of the system that Microsoft simply doesn't allow users to touch, because in some cases, they still can, so they can use that to implement things like rootkits sorry I mean "kernel-level anti-cheat" that users have no effective way of removing or bypassing.

This actually sounds like a really good idea! This could be big! I wanna try this for myself to get a feel for it.

Only a little. The only thing I'm really worried about is IBM (maybe secretly) forcing Red Hat to reduce or cut its involvement with Fedora to save money. Without Red Hat's help, Fedora might struggle, but I don't think it will die or be corrupted as a result of whatever's going on.

Also, while I don't have the full picture, I heard that the whole "closed source" thing was an exaggeration in the first place. So maybe there isn't really much to worry about. We'll just have to see of course. I like Fedora a lot, but I can just switch if I need to, so I'm not really letting this worry me.

after 90 days, they just send the BAT back to you. They don't keep it.

  • uBlock Origin (of course)
  • Tab Stash: It lets you organize your tabs into groups and keep the groups around in a sidebar that unloads them when you don't need them at the moment. Very helpful for someone like me who always has a bunch of tabs open.
  • uBlacklist: It lets you blacklist domains from showing up in search results. It supports different search engines. Every helpful to get rid of SEO spam sites and mirror sites.
  • Duplicate Tabs Closer: It detects when you have multiple tabs open for the same webpage.

Fedora is great! It ended my distro-hopping.

I use Nvidia's proprietary driver because the open-source Nouveau driver won't work with my display. Will this update break the driver, or just make it slower?

I'd love to stop using Nvidia, but I don't have much choice about using their proprietary driver until I get my next video card, or Nouveau starts working for me.

For something as important as your web browser, that's a pretty good reason to me.

Nvidia is undermining patent law. That should be an issue that big corpos can understand.

Why fight so hard to stay on a platform that clearly doesn't want you anymore?

Not trying to be defeatist, but I feel pretty confident that this stuff will be forcibly or "accidentally" removed soon before the canvas stops being editable, or it will just be edited after the fact. The admins have the power to simply wipe away anything on the canvas that they don't like.

The fact that this isn't the first time I've seen someone make that false equivalence demonstrates pretty well the problem that comes when a small number of instances have the majority of Lemmy's total users. I chose a small instance myself, partially to do my part in avoiding this issue, but the consolidation will likely continue to be a big problem until a good solution can be thought up and implemented.

If you want to be nitpicky about it, you could consider it to not be an "ad" because its not a company paying to put that text there. It's Ubuntu promoting their own product. But I don't think it makes much of a difference in this case, since it's a big annoyance either way.

I forgot where I heard this, but at one point around the same time, Microsoft was trying to get BASIC embedded into webpages for Internet Explorer as a competitor to JavaScript.

Would the internet really be better with BASIC?

I'm going off memory. Pretty glad that never took off, even if what we were left with was Javascript...

Because you can make sure it was done right. You don't have to worry about bugs or other issues being the result of faulty packaging if you're the one doing the packaging. Plus It makes reproducing bugs easier when everyone's using the same package, and declaring the flatpak as the official package makes it much more likely that people will use the flatpak.

I think this is about the formation of the Open Enterprise Linux Association, which Oracle is a founding member of.

I use Flatpaks and they're pretty great specifically for gui applications that don't need any kind of deep integration with the system. For terminal applications or for applications that do need system integration, they're not quite ready yet.

I've never tried snaps, but I hear almost exclusively bad things about them, so I'm not really interested in trying them either.

I understand and that was one of the things I was thinking of when I said "Valveā€™s done bad things in the past of course". But when you compare them to many other AAA publishers, I don't see how Valve is particularly bad. Especially when you start bringing up lootboxes. Unlike many other publishes that go these same bad practices, and at a larger scale at that, value has done some good too, and is generally much more permissive about things like fanworks, and that does a lot to build good will. I don't see what's "short memory" about this.

And I'm not even saying that I love valve or anything either, but the devil? Compared to other publishers?

How does this compare to waifu2x for anime-style images? Does it manage to beat it, or is this more for photos?

edit: it looks like it's much better

As someone who currently uses a note-taking app with tags, I'd highly recommended adding that as a feature if it's not out of scope. I couldn't imagine going back to taking notes without tags. It makes organization so much simpler.

Once you get used to it, single click just makes more sense. It's more consistent with how clicking works basically everywhere else in computer software as well.

The paid option would require a CLA, wouldn't it?

Are you getting them confused with another company? Valve's done bad things in the past of course, but they're still a lot better than most other gaming companies that I know of. I typically put Valve alongside companies like Capcom and Sega as "one of the not bad ones" in terms of malicious practices.

I do agree with you that 4-clause BSD is open-source, but only just barely, and I agree with GP that it goes against the spirit of FOSS even if it is technically "open-source".

Plus the advertising clause is just an obnoxious thing to have in a license regardless.

fwiw I remember reading around a year ago, a post by the KDE contributor Pointiest Stick that he actually thinks that Fedora has a better Plasma experience than Opensuse. I can't find the post where he said that though so take it with a grain of salt. But as someone who does use Fedora with Plasma, it feels like it mostly works fine. The only big issue I can think of atm is that the Plasma Discover auto-updater just doesn't work at all. It doesn't auto update. That could just be an issue specific to me though.

Fedora (with Plasma) and I don't plan on moving to another distro until something tangible happens. Switching my distro based on hypothetical situations would keep me from ever staying on any distro for very long.

That being said if I had to use another distro, I feel like I'd try out Debian stable, while using Flatpaks and Distrobox to get up-to-date software. That feels like it would be a good approximation of the excellent middleground that Fedora has.

Isn't Mumble voice chat only? It's not really a full replacement.

I was going to do the unbranded build option but from what I could find, unbranded builds don't get updates.

IIRC all of the games also have workshop support where you can download romhacks.

Wow! On Fish, it brings up a whole search bar with a colored grid of results and tab to select and fuzzy finding. This is cool!

He said brave search. It has an independent index, so that's a pretty notable difference from something like Duckduckgo which IIRC uses Bing under the hood. The googles features is also a really cool idea! I just wish there was a way to make private googles for just yourself.
