Why do so few apps (besides browsers) seem to support it? E.g. Win10 photo viewer and seemingly all my messaging apps

The format itself sounds good, and I see it everywhere online, but is there some reason it's unsupported?

Check out Ondsel. They're working on improving FreeCAD and making the workflow not suck.

Still definitely a work in progress, but the dimension/constraint tools and 3D feature naming are already lightyears better in their version.

As the de facto IT guy for my family, I block ads on all their computers just as a basic safety measure.

I can usually spot a fake download button and avoid scammy sites, but my parents and grandparents seem magnetically attracted to them

Yeah, good point. The others are mainly hosting text and some images

I sure want it to be

Federation and an open source code base should prevent one team's dumb decisions from being able to wreck a whole platform, like reddit, twitter, digg, and others before

Maybe EndeavourOS (a convenient installer for Arch) with a desktop that supports Wayland.

I run that with Gnome in Wayland mode on my desktop and with Sway (Wayland equivalent of i3) on my laptop and I've been very happy with that. You could also run KDE if you prefer

I use Joplin and sync the notes between devices (including Android) with Syncthing. There's lots of other options for syncing, but I already had Syncthing set up and liked it

Speaking of, got any good peertube channels? Tbh, I'm more familiar with nebula and floatplane - where YT creators made their own platform. Maybe that's where things are headed

I use DNS66 downloaded from F-Droid. It registers itself as a VPN, but it's actually a DNS filter, not a VPN. It works to filter ads on most apps, and you can individually disable it for specific apps if needed.

I also use the Firefox app, which supports a few add-ons (much less than the desktop version), including uBlock and some similar options

I'd recommend one or both. They're working great for me on a non-rooted Pixel 4a 5G

Fair point. I watch a lot of YT and block ads (though it sounds like they're finally cracking down on that). I support some creators on Nebula and Patreon, but I guess YT Premium is basically like those.

Arrange the M&Ms a little different and it's the infinity gauntlet

Links to external instances should automatically be transformed

100% agree. Getting linked to other instances where I'm not signed in is a really clunky experience. It seems like that's been happening less since I got on the Jerboa app (or maybe I'm just clicking on less links)

Transcendence 19% I'm a sucker for sci-fi with a cool concept like mind uploading

Green Hornet 44% It's funny and the fight choreography is cool

I have one too and also love it. Runs Linux just fine

I'm reading their FAQ here, but I'm still not sure how the money and hosting side works yet https://help.odysee.tv/category-basics/whatisodysee/

Edit: looks like it's at least partially open source, maybe fully. It's centrally-hosted and funded by ads, premium subscriptions, and some sort of crypto scheme that can boost a video's discoverability. I've actually heard of some of the creators though (unlike PeerTube), so that's interesting

With more automation showing up in all different fields, I'm warming up to the idea of UBI or something like it.

Theoretically, more production is happening per human being, so everybody should have a higher standard of living. But (among other issues) people at the top are hoarding an unfair portion of the profits, and UBI seems like a straightforward way to help offset that.

EndeavourOS on desktop and laptop. It's been working great for years

Thanks for the new vocabulary. That's a useful word

Libertarian-ish, I guess.

Watching the US and other governments going on a power trip has sure been pushing me that way.

I mostly don't want government involved in anybody's lives unless they're harming others. It drives me mad when bureaucracy, police, etc. show up to harass, jail, or kill people that were minding their own business. Plus mass surveillance without a warrant.

On the other hand, I recognize the need for appropriate regulations (to avoid harming people on a broader scale). It also makes sense for them to direct large scale projects like infrastructure and certain services.

So, I guess, make life better for people. Otherwise, mind your own business

Person, place, thing? That's called a Noun

Jokes aside, I think I'd call them services or platforms

I also like air conditioning

I can't ever find one good label for myself and here you are with four

Yeah, sorry. I meant one of the PC Yogas. I think mine is the C930

You actually probably could get a different Linux distro running on an Android tablet, but it would probably take more work than on a PC

According to this you can even follow a peertube channel from Lemmy, though I haven't been able to get that to work from either side. Curious if anyone else has?

Always wanted a pet Wingull since I played Emerald. I need to evolve it if it's actually going to fight though

Found Cynthia

Not really sure what the label means, but I'll join you on the less government team!

What podcast? I like a good podcast.

Yeah, I feel like that phenomenon happens elsewhere too. I read the book B.S. Jobs last year, and it talked about is all the (debatably) useless positions popping up at companies - extra layers of management, assistants to make the managers feel important, corporate lawyers that are only there to cause trouble for the other team's corporate lawyers. Just a whole lot of man-hours spent not making products/services/whatever.

(I wouldn't say I'm 100% on board with all the book's arguments, but it sure made me think)

Sway is great. What do you use for that top bar?

I removed Edge and IE on my work computer and the only time I had trouble was when I tried to open the built-in manual in some non-Microsoft software and it failed.

I think it used some embedded browser component that Edge or IE provides

Yeah, I wonder what the cost breakdown is for transcoding, storage, streaming, etc.

He'll always be #1
