You can make "brand accounts" on YouTube that are a completely different profile from the default account. She probably won't notice if you make one and switch her to it.

You'll probably want to spend some time using it for yourself secretly to curate the kind of non-radical content she'll want to see, and also set an identical profile picture on it so she doesn't notice. I would spend at least a week "breaking it in."

But once you've done that, you can probably switch to the brand account without logging her out of her Google account.

Why is everyone up in arms about this? The abuse of their free service was rampant. This isn't a core project change, this is just a measure to keep a version of the project up for free without completely taking it down. They don't even have a way to monetize this. An alternative was to simply shut it down and only allow you to self host it.

I self host my Jitsi instance, but as a privacy nut, I don't see a problem with this. Absolute privacy cannot always coexist with free anonymous services. Don't blame Jitsi, blame the people who ruined it for everyone else.

Pictrs 0.4 recently added support for object storage. This is fantastic, because object storage is dirt cheap compared to traditional block storage (like a VM filesystem). This helps a lot for image storage, which is a large part of the problem, but it's not the whole problem.

I know Lemmy uses Postgres for everything else, but they should really invest time into moving towards something more sustainable for long term/permanent hosting. Paid Postgres services are obscenely upcharged and prohibitively expensive, so that's not an option.

I'm armchair architecting here so I'm not sure what that would look like for Lemmy (Cloudflare KV? Redis?)

Still, even my own private instance has been growing at a rate of about 700MB per day, and I don't even subscribe to that many things. I can't imagine what the major instances are dealing with. This isn't sustainable unless we want to start purging old data, which will kill Lemmy long term.

Not only did I add threads.net to my blocked instances list, I also went scorched Earth and outright blocked Facebook's entire IP range through my firewall. Don't want them "accidentally" reading any data from my server ;)

They didn't even address what will happen when Facebook starts aggregating data from instances federated with Threads:

Facebook is an analytics company. Even if it's not mission critical to the function of Threads, they will scoop up data sent to Threads, they will use it to create profiles on every single non-Threads user they can, and they will sell that data.

It doesn't even matter if it violates privacy laws; the laws are toothless to companies as large as Facebook. They'll just be made to pay a fine and carry on as they are.

In the Android world, the Sync for Reddit developer expressed some subtle interest in Lemmy, but has not committed to anything one way or the other.

This is because Lemmy uses websockets to retrieve live data from the server. I imagine this was a good thing when Lemmy was unpopulated, but now it's just in the way. It's also causing strange bugs, like the vote count rapidly changing to wrong values, or a post just completely changing into a different one while you are reading it.

Websockets will be removed from Lemmy in 0.18, which should fix all of this.

I don't think I've been banned, but I did a similar thing. I requested all my data from Reddit, then used that list of comment/post IDs to mass-edit them. I think I'm in the clear because I used the official third party API, with an official "app." If you used the private API or instrumented this via the browser, that may be why you were banned.

Anyway, if you or someone else wants their full history, Reddit will give it to you via a data export request.

This means that once the transition between Squarespace and Google happens, your data will also be removed.

I responded to this and basically said, that wording is ambiguous. Will my data be removed before or after the transition? They replied:

I'm sorry for the confusion. To be clear, Squarespace will not receive any of your Google Domains data. Only the active domain names, excluding the domain names that have been deleted or transferred out, will be affected by the data shift to Squarespace.

So if I trust their word, it means, if I've already transferred out my domains (which I have), Squarespace shouldn't receive any of my customer information, or even have a record of who I am. Hopefully that's true.

I still don't like how flippant they've been in every public communication. I read the ToS. It's short for a ToS, everyone should read it. They claim it was taken "out of context," but there wasn't much context to take it out of. The ToS didn't make this distinction they're claiming, there was no separation of Vultr forum data from cloud service data. It was just a bad, poorly written ToS, plain and simple.

They haven't taken an ounce of responsibility for that, and have instead placed the blame on "a Reddit post" (when this was being discussed in way more detail on other tech forums, Vultr even chimed in on LowEndTalk).

As for this:

Section 12.1(a) of our ToS, which was added in 2021, ends with "for purposes of providing the Services to you." This is intended to make it clear that any rights referenced are solely for the purposes of providing the Services to you.

This means nothing. A simple "we are enhancing your user experience by mining your data and giving you a better quality service" would have covered them on this.

We only got an explanation behind the ToS ransom dialog after their CMO whined in a CRN article. That information should have been right in the dialog on the website.

In both places, they've actively done vague things to cause confusion, and are offended when people interpret it incorrectly.

After spez (fuck spez) basically told all the moderators "fuck you" today, I'd say there is enough momentum to get at least a good half of the participating subs on board with an indefinite blackout. And with more moderators checking their inboxes and feeds tomorrow, "after the blackout," I anticipate seeing a second wave starting tomorrow and throughout the next week, as these mods return to reddit temporarily to coordinate.

I did. The benefits as I see them:

• I can still use Lemmy if the instance I would have used as my "home instance" ever went down.
• Even if a public instance doesn't go down, all this extra load is making strange bugs surface that I don't encounter (I still have the live refresh bug everyone has, but not this one).
• I have full control over my account.
• If I ever want to get to customizing my UI later, I can.
• Content I create originates on my instance, and I have full control over it. I can't stop other instances from caching what I post publicly, but this still gives me more data governance.
• I can curate my "All" tab to only show stuff I actually want to see, instead of trying to figure out how to block communities (not sure if that's possible for regular users).
• I get a custom domain which I think is pretty neat.

I don't need or want replication of my private projects to a peer to peer network. That's just extra bandwidth to and from my server, and bandwidth can be expensive. I already replicate my code to two different places I control, and that's enough for me.

I'm not sure who Radicle is for, but I don't think the casual hobbyist looking to self host something like Forgejo would benefit at all from Radicle.

Loading the source code for Radicle on Radicle also seems fairly slow. It seems this distributed nature comes at a speed tradeoff.

With the whole Yuzu thing going on, I can see some benefit to Radicle for high profile projects that may be subject to a takedown. In that respect, it's a bit like "Tor for Git."

I suspect that over time, pirate projects and other blatantly illegal activities will make use of Radicle for anti-takedown reasons. But to me, these two projects solve two different problems, for two different audiences, and are not really comparable.

Edit: There is already enough controversy surrounding Radicle, that, if I were someone looking to host a takedown-resistant, anonymous code repository, I would probably be better served hosting an anonymous Forgejo instance on a set of anonymous Njalla domains and VPSes. The blockchain aspect was already a bit odd, and what I'm now seeing from Radicle does not exactly inspire confidence. I don't think I'll ever use this.

OF requires strict government issued ID verification in some jurisdictions. Patreon does not, at least in the US.

That should be your deciding factor already. No one should have their privacy invaded just to send you a few bucks a month.

This doesn't solve the problem of sending Threads a copy of absolutely every bit of activity that happens on the instance. If I'm on an instance that federates with Threads, even if I put them out of sight/out of mind, they still get a copy of everything I do. A lot of people are on the fediverse for privacy reasons, yet here we are with people begging to hand Facebook this data on a silver platter.

Yes, they could. But a real-time feed of activity is more complete, easier to manage, and doesn't require them to go and build a scraping tool just for this.

If I don't want Threads to have any of my data sent to them, I should be able to choose without needing to leave an instance I've been on for potentially years.

It's caused by Lemmy-UI's websockets client. It does weird stuff like this when the site is under heavy load (we broke Lemmy!)

It's being removed in Lemmy 0.18 and being replaced with a more stable http client. No word on when that will release, but it looks like progress is being made fast.
