Thank you for the amazing job, as always! Cloudflare is a solid solution :)

Fantastic news! Can we please do the same on lemmy.world? Please?

Sorry for those

It's not your fault :) We know you admins are working really hard to keep the server as stable as possible.

Lemmy is my new home now and it'll stay that way.

I'm not going to be drastic on reddit yet, I intend to make a GDPR request to get all my data, but I''ll immediately unsub from all the subs I'm currently in save for a few very niche that are hard to replace (for now).

I'll probably check in every now and then those niche but I'll definitely stop posting.

I'll stay here, I don't tolerate being treated like sh*it as they did, it's totally unacceptable. Even if they apologized, they shown their true colors, we know they would be lying.

I came here a couple of weeks ago and since then I did my best to be involved in lemmy communities so as to not miss reddit, and you know what? It worked :)

I'm not deleting my account because I want my data first (sent a GDPR request), but I don't really care anymore about what they do, nor I care about reddit as a platform, engagement here is much higher quality.

Still following news because it's entertaining, I love how the community got creative with the protest.

I'm taking the opposite approach, that is, instead of blocking what I don't want to see, I join what I do want to see.

Blocking is not effective if you want a "curated" feed IMO, new communities are being created all the time, especially now that many are migrating over from reddit, you might never "end" blocking stuff.

OP post is a different situation though, that kind of content is illegal in many countries (especially EU), just being federated with them could pose a legal risk, it's not just stuff some people don't want to see.

I honestly wouldn't want that, a feature like multi-reddit would be much better IMO.

I personally don't want to be "automatically" subscribed to all tech communities for example just because I joined one, nor I want to be flood by an immense feed because all communities of the same type are put all together, that takes away individual choices IMO.

We had exactly the same problem on reddit, but multi-reddit solved that very well by leaving the choice to individuals instead of being forced by admins.

EDIT: for those who don't know, multi-reddit is a reddit feature that allows you to create different "labels" into which you can combine different subreddits, which label to create and which subs to combine is totally a user choice, those labels become "tabs" into your UI that you can use as they were individual subs.

So for example, I can create a label/tab called "linux" and use it to combine r/linux + r/linuxmx + r/xfce, etc., than I can create another label called "games" and combine r/MMORPG + r/wow + r/guildwars2, etc., and so on.

multi-reddits can be private, that is only the user who created them can see them, or they can be made public, so if some user doesn't want to create their own, they can use multis created by other people.

Came here to say the same, it's BS, all mods asked their communities, most with polls, other with closely monitoring feedback in the blackout announcement threads, no mod acted on their own, they were all supported by the overwhelming majority of their communities.

Why? This is like going to a foreign country and demand they change their laws because you don't like them.

It's fine as they are, it doesn't take much to understand how they work, a few days of confusion won't kill anyone, having everything spoonfed to you all the time is detrimental to the mind.

Do they hope to pick up all other 3rd party apps users? Not that it matters much to me since my reason for quitting reddit is the way they mistreated the entire userbase (I don't use apps), but I'm curious nonetheless to see how this ends.

Looks pretty dumb to me, but hey if they want a walled community they have the right to have it.

It doesn't align with me and it makes me super happy of being here instead of there.

Thanks a lot for the explanation and also your other example comment, super useful!

As for me, I'll simply unjoin their communities and find the same somewhere else, I feel a bit sad tho for open users there that will have to create a new account somewhere else.

Yeah, this new thing will be botted to hell lol.

I don't have any idea of who they are, but I don't get it: we're not preemptively defederating from Meta because it would be closed minded to do so (as per your admin decision), while Meta bad behavior is well documented (they've been fined by EU several times already), and we want to preemptively defederate from these people without even knowing how they will actually behave? Why? Shouldn't they be "innocent until proven guilty"?

Lmao, so much for him telling everyone it was just a noise, it'll be done in 2 days, it doesn't affect us :D

THIS is actually the best piece of news from that article: https://www.quippd.com/writing/2023/06/15/unofficial-subreddit-migration-list-lemmy-kbin-etc.html

In my opinion we shouldn't, it would look like retaliation and that's never a good thing.

Let's stay open and welcoming regardless of what other people do.

It's public trading, it's financial slavery, you're forced to grow your profits and cut costs more year after year and that's totally unsustainable in the long run, they should change the parameters used to value companies but that's not going to happen in the world we live in.

I hate what's happening on reddit as much as everyone else but it's very understandable from a business point of view, they're going public later this year, their only purpose right now is to please investors, everything else doesn't matter.

Anyone in spez's shoes would indeed do the same tho most probably in a smarter way (I don't think he's very smart, judging by what he did and said so far).

If you're EU you can All those in EU can ask reddit for the entirety of your data as a GDPR request, much easier than downloading it yourself, especially since some apps have limits to how many posts they can fetch.

How to request your reddit data

it was only at 20k three days ago.

It was less than 500 when I joined 10 days ago :D

The server itself is pretty new also, I think Ruud created it the first few days of June, huge props to him!

My much simpler stance is: they don't want lemmy.world users on their instance, I'll respect that, I unsubbed from their communities and found the same elsewhere.

They're not the only Lemmy servers in the world, Lemmy is still new overall, I don't see any problem in "rebuilding" the 2 big subs they have somewhere else, I'm already putting my effort in contributing to make it so.

edit: typo

That always happens when a new platform is born.

Tech/nerds are always the ones moving first because they don't mind the quirks, they're not scared of bugs or instabilities.

They start building up communities until the platform is ready for the rest of the people, it was the same for reddit, tho it happened so many years ago the new people wouldn't even know about it.

4 more...

The protest has been already very successful IMO, for once, we showed we can literally crash the entire platform just by flipping a switch.

Then there's the significant drop in ad revenue as you said (there was a Verge article about it) and we probably also ruined the IPO (Reuters, I mean fuc*king REUTERS, said the IPO is premature and reddit should reconsider for the time being).

But the most important thing, the protest made people aware of valid alternatives, I didn't know anything about the fediverse before the protest begun and now I'm happy to be here, many other people like me.

I think people saying the protest is not working are those hoping reddit changes, they're being delusional, reddit won't change, but even it they did change, I really can't grasp how some people want to be treated like sh*it like reddit has done so far.

Reddit is being abusive towards their users and that alone should be more than enough a reason for moving out.

That's the reason why I switched to iPhone after many years of Android, security updates are vital nowadays with all the sensitive data and apps we use on our phones, Apple is the only one that guarantees al least 5 years, iPhones are not too expensive if you don't buy the latest models and I'd rather avoid supporting companies that don't understand the importance of security.

31 more...

At this point mods should just quit moderating altogether, there were more than 20 thousands participating in the protest, good luck replacing them all.

Let subs derail and see how investors are happy about what kind of content reddit hosts.

No need to be so rude, noone is forcing you to answer questions, you know?

Thanks for the work you're doing :)

Community fragmentation (hatred even) is a problem on reddit too, yet reddit as a whole lived pretty well regardless.

The same will happen here, when there are a lot of people some drama is bound to happen, a few communities will cut themselves out from the rest of the world, but it's ok, the rest will thrive nonetheless.

Valve then forwarded us the statement from Nintendo's lawyers, and told us that we had to come to an agreement with Nintendo in order to release on Steam.

We all know Nintendo is a bitch and there's nothing illegal in emulators, but Valve's stance looks reasonable to me, it would be serious damage to Steam if they were involved in legal litigation.

I don't agree.

The software is opensource, noone "owns" that kind of software, many people contribute to it, anyone can fork it, modify it, and setup their own servers with it, regardless of the belief of the one who started the project.

Lemmy devs made that software opensource, that equals to donating it to the entire world, they don't control what you do with it, in any way, it's not that you can't use it if you don't agree with their ideas.

Now, telling people to avoid the "main server"/"grad whatever" is fine, because those are the servers in which those "political views" are expressed, if that bothers you better to avoid it.

But any instance of it? It doesn't make any sense, other server are not maintained by lemmy devs, and there can be those who don't agree at all with their political views.

Same goes for donations, you don't donate to people, you donate to the maintenance of the software that you're here using.

Did you use reddit? Yes?

Well know that Reddit got investments from Tencent, a Chinese company, do you know what the Chinese government thinks of human rights, don't you? Yet we're were there using the product.

You can't "categorize" everything and everyone based on the views of a few, but if you're still set on it, then you should quit lemmy altogether, it wouldn't be coherent otherwise, in my opinion.

Though if you want to fork lemmy, you're totally free to do it, that's what opensource is about.

I vote for enforcing the rule.

Someone created /c/general for our general posting needs, let's use that one instead of spamming this one.

It's most probably IBM forcing it, but yeah it's dumb.

I don't because no antivirus can protect you from yourself, I learned that the hard way while I was still using Windows many years ago.

I had antivirus and antimalware on Windows and I kept them updated and ran scans regularly, almost religiously, than I got a malware that antivirus couldn't detect (they take a while to be updated with new viruses/malware that constantly come out) and the only way to remove it was a blank new install following a specific procedure to clean it all.

That day I understood that no matter how attentive you are about your antivirus, you're never really protected until it's you who learns what to do and what not while accessing the web, so I did a bit of research about how to better configure my PC, how to better recognize phishing/scamming, using adblocker, don't download random software, stuff like that.

I basically learned "how to behave". I stopped using antivirus/antimalware on Windows and I didn't catch a virus since, then I switched to Linux and I still apply the same principles of "good behavior".

That's not to say I'm immune to viruses, I'm certainly not, but my mindset now is that if I ever catch a virus, it will be my fault for doing something I shouldn't have done, and I'll do my best to learn from it instead of relying on software to do that for me.

Try this: go into your user settings, change Type from Local to Subscribed and Sort type from Active to Hot (or New if you prefer that).

Then click on Communities on the top bar, switch the list from Local to All, and find communities you're interested in, you can also search for specific names.

Avoid names ending in @beehaw.org if you see them, they defederated us so we can't interact with them anymore.

When you find something you like, click on the community name to go to their page, on the right you'll find the Subscribe button.

After you subscribed to enough communities, close lemmy and open it again, see if it's better that way (it is for me).

Apparently some idiots from here think it's fun coordinating a troll-attack on them and they don't have enough mod power to deal with it, so they removed their connections with us and sh.itjust.works.

As I understand it, API charges are for everyone, Apollo for example showed the app is within the limits, I think other app devs did the same.

While not wanting their data to be scraped for AI for free is indeed a valid reason, if it was the real reason they would have come up with different tiers of pricing like every other paid platform does.

Edit: Apollo was within the limits, but reddit changed the rules apparently ...

Innocent until proven otherwise.

There are many years of proof already about facebook/meta acting very maliciously, actively breaking laws and being fined for it, is that not proof enough? How many more do you need before you can say they're not innocent at all?

Are mastodon users really going to to use meta alternatives? Isn't the purpose of the fediverse to escape corporations control?

Why would anyone in their right state of mind, go from a free alternative (as in free speech, not free beer) back into the hands of a corporation?

You're not missing anything by not using apps, as other people said, many people came here because reddit apps stopped working and they're looking for replacements.

I never used apps on reddit, old.reddit on desktop was by far the best experience for me, I don't intend to use apps on lemmy either.

Spez later revealed an exciting new idea for a system where users will be able to vote moderators out of their positions and install new ones. This type of pure democracy on a site like reddit is bound to be wildly successful and incorruptible. But, there's only one problem: At the pace it takes reddit to develop new mod tools and systems, it'll be years before such a system is ready. That clearly will not do in a society built on instant gratification.

That is why the r/PoliticalHumor mod team would like to announce that starting today we are bringing pure democracy to the subreddit: All users are now mods, and as such, are part of the "Landed Gentry". Welcome to the club.

That's brilliant!! 1 million and 500 thousands users, hilarious.

public debate platform like Lemmy without controlling who enters is a horrible idea

Reddit is a public debate platform (even before Lemmy) and they don't control who enters in any way, is that really a horrible idea as you say?

If I wanted to see facebook shit I would use facebook, I stopped using whatsapp when it was bought by facebook, I don't want to see their content overwhelming the fediverse, that's why I'm here instead of there.
