Gaming related: while true Proton put Linux gaming on the map, most problems are anti cheat related. Some games run even better under Linux IT related: this really depends on your job. I work 100% on Linux machines but my client is indeed a Windows machine with regular fuckups because of shitty Updates or things Windows does for no good reason or even worse no proper error handling or logging. Non power user related: most stuff happens in Browsers Today so watching Videos, browsing the web works the same and doesnt need that much bloat and spyware Windows delivers by default

Thinkpad is a excellent choice for Linux as Lenovo supports Linux on some machines. I am rocking an old intel 4th gen Notebook as sidekick to my main machine. Works like a charm and was cheap.

SELinux should not be an issue if you stick to common directories and use :Z flag after the mount path with docker, afaik podman uses the same mechanism. There’s even a tool for selinux container policies: https://github.com/containers/udica

Regarding firewall stuff, disable it on your machine and you are fine. Port forwarding in containers is necessary to connect to services, now way around.

Surprised that nobody yelled Proton yet? Lots of Windows games running pretty good, some close to native, some even better on Linux through Proton. But here is the thing you mentioned which could be a problem: anti cheat. It works on Linux but depends on the developer to enable it. Some major games simply does not support it. You can check them here: https://areweanticheatyet.com/ , for general compability check https://protondb.com , even non Steam games can run through Lutris with little to no hassle. Proxmox with GPU passthrough seems like a big clunky overhead in terms of gaming but maybe you got that game that will never run on Linux.

True but it depends on your usecase- of you need all the fancy new stuff and want to move on quickly you should go another route instead of fucking around with forced software you do not want. Maybe Debian testing or Fedora? If you do not care about the newest stuff I guess Mint is a perfect fit.

It is hard to adapt Windows habits to Linux for some cases. E.g. you sometimes use Adobe Photocrap for editing photos. Reasonable that ppl want to use what they know, so they will try to use it with WINE and obviously will fail. „Linux sucks, it cant run the properitary shit subscription software, going back to Windows!“ if someone really depends on such software then yes stay the fuck with Windows. For most other tasks there is a solution available. And for the fear of terminal: I bet most users never ever have to see or use it once since there are GUI tools available for such crucial tasks like updating. Mint does a great job in terms of windows like experience for beginners but also is a full fledged GNU/Linux distro. But yeah if you want to change to Linux it is not just the desktop that changes, it is a whole philosophy that opens up a new world if you are curious.

Looking for speed and some other neat things (DKIM and modify headers) I setup postfix on Debian and I guess this system is still running. Quickly after that I explored NGINX as a reverse proxy for yet again shitty Windows IIS webservers. This was my entry to open source and Linux in general.

You'll break things if you do more and more stuff suggested inside this thread without testing it. Maybe executing ldconfig was enough, but if you try more and more stuff you don't know what you did. Linux is very hard to break, especially when you didn't mess around with things like packages and libraries by yourself, there's mostly a way back. But if you're scared use the time and make a backup and a live USB stick with a Linux distro of your choice to rescue the system if something's terribly messed up.

I gamed on both green and red. Nvidia drivers messed things up very often back then. I built a new gaming rig one year ago and went straight with amdgpu, no matter the question. Never had any issues. Bad thing atm is that GNOME is still working hard on VRR. There is an AUR patch available which is either buggy or outdated atm. Thats why I switched to KDE to use FreeSync. Performance related I think they both good, to me it was more a choice of compability and less hassle.

Yes but is that affecting you businesswise, for example using terraform for proviosioning infrastructure for a customer? As far as I understand this move it affects companies like gruntwork who makes a business on top of terraform with terragrunt. Dont get me wrong, I do dislike this change also but saying „it is not open source anymore“ is just wrong. It is still open source but its usage changed for companies making a dollar here or there with technologies they dont develop.
