What if you could go and a rent physical DVDs

Well research teams have been working on it 10 years

It’s so weird how we look back on those things that were seen as inconveniences, driving to a physical store / rental time limits, as good things now.

It’ll be interesting to see if we find ways to kinda bridge those gaps.

On the science side it's a human from the moment of conception.

Citation needed

This basically underpins the whole thing and is pretty hand waved away

Another possible innovation would be people onboard to row

YouTube is the cable tv of 2023

Never going to happen. They’ve been going the total opposite direction for a long time

Honestly have no idea why Circle CI would feel the need to do this. Is there really that much external pressure from ???somewhere??? to suppress anti-Israel commentary?

I don’t think that really follows. Would you say molecules of fluid have a collective consciousness?

We might be picking up on things we don’t consciously notice that guide our movement but it’s still a local thing that doesn’t require a collective consciousness

This year I’m gonna Google wtf that means

I’m not seeing how this in anyway even really touches on this issue at hand. A paper on human development to show that “science says” we have a “human” at the moment of conception?

At the end of the day this is going to just be about what your definition of a “human” is rather than anything “science” has to say.

You will be in close quarters with a lot of people. People suck and will be inconsiderate fucks. Airlines are shit and have you by the balls in terms of delays and shitty service.

Go in with low expectations and don’t make yourself more miserable by getting upset about it

This is what Jon Snow did. Obviously real life works the same way

You were given a lot of proper responses despite your unhinged edit rantings

Things you do in school don’t socially matter? That is quite the opposite of my experience lol

That’s disgusting. Which particular sites are out of control?

Having robots to do grunt work and that somehow being bad for our society is just the dumbest timeline. Fucking cunts

Only if we continue to be dumbasses

We need to take universal basic income more seriously as a future policy

I’m not a proponent of this mindset but this seems like an obvious mischaracterization of the argument

My biggest issues is that it seems to exist only in direct response to “doomers” as they love to say. And are maybe right to criticize, but having the whole thing just being a counter extreme doesn’t work either. And there’s lot of hand waving about technology and history and markets correcting themselves.

But I’ve never gotten the impression that it’s just a cynical “I don’t care if AI fucks everyone as long as I make money.”

Money

Just spiteful. And ironic if you really want to claim to care about public health

So basically decline to use Facebook? I’m skeptical. People will just opt in to the tracking, most people don’t care. Or maybe they’ll post on Facebook about how they don’t like it.

Even if they did and chose to go to some other platform, they’ll eventually run up against the same business model decisions.

What are your hobbies?

For sure. Part of me would want to take a sort of principled stand and not fuck with anything meta. But if I can follow people on threads from Mastadon, that would be pretty nice, and I think that integration would lend Mastadon and federation in general some legitimacy to the normies (for lack of a better word).

There’s a bunch but I can’t find them

I have it pretty fucking good in the grand scheme of things so just remember that

The one you list lastly seems like the only actual reason. The others are things they DONT care about

AH. Well then… that makes a bit more sense lol

True. I do think this is a little bigger than “high school drama.” You go around farting all over the school and you’re gonna be seen by your peers as pretty gross.

Doesn’t mean you won’t have better social standing later in life and enjoy that. But it will likely be because you learned to start doing things like farting discretely.

I mean, I think it’s a little different in that there’s tangible AI products that millions of people are already using?

I have my own doubts about how the current architectures scale towards “general intelligence”, but seems like a very real breakthrough that is already producing at a significant level.

Idk man. It just seems like you’re saying “political issue” but what you mean is “doesn’t affect them”.

And I think the whole they’re not “anti” these people they just don’t care enough about them to vote for them to have basic protections is a tough sell. At some point it’s a forced choice, and sitting out isn’t really an option.

I guess maybe it’s how they truly see it, but it doesn’t stand up to much scrutiny.

Effective altruism is something that sounds good in principle, and I still think is good in general, though can kind of run out of control.

Sam Bankman Fried was someone who at least claimed to follow this philosophy. The issue being that you can talk yourself into doing bad things (fraud) in the name or earning money that you would then donate much of.

And more generally get into doing “long term” or “big picture” good while also doing a lot of harm. But hey the ends justify the means.

Again, I think the principle of being a lot more calculated in how we do philanthropy is a huge good thing. But the EA movement has had some missteps and probably needs to be reigned in a bit.

Funnily enough Wiki quotes Altman as one of the critics.

Christian nationalism is just the merging of Christian and American identity. “America is a Christian nation”. You hear similar often from pandering and or deranged Republicans

Ha, I could not be more the opposite. I want to be 75% done with my day by 1pm. I’d rather them be at 8am

The more fundamental issue is tying it to “humanness” at all. And I don’t think dependence on the mother really comes into play in terms of if it deserves protection. There’s really no reason you couldn’t have a concious parasite.

All of the highlights why it’s important to define what specific qualities we are looking for in determining the degree of rights an entity would have.

Social beings as well. I wouldn’t even say it’s about how you present facts. We are pretty bad at interrogating our own reasoning for things. We will quote facts when asked for our reasoning, but once you start really digging in it’s often not really about that.

I actually just finished reading “How minds change” by David McRaney and would recommend it to anyone.

But if I had to summarize my biggest takeaway: you can’t really change someone’s mind, you can just facilitate convo with them that leads to them changing their own mind to some degree.

I agree that we shouldn’t devalue it, and that was my initial word choice. That wasn’t the intent behind the choice, but I get it. I’m not sure “essential” is a good descriptor either. It is essential, but that’s not the defining quality we’re after.

I think “matters more to their generation” is doing some heavy lifting. They surely know how to navigate social media and chat servers and all that. And in a way that’s more important.

I don’t think that maps to being able to use Linux with any proficiency.

Kids are smart in some ways and stupid in a lot of ways that adults are. They’re largely being put in a battle they can’t win against YouTube and TikTok that systematically target their psychology.
