Until we live in a world where people have equal access to information and essential technology piracy is a moral imperative.

Should something which costs a few hours worth of work in the developed word cost three weeks worth of work in a less developed country, just to make a publishing company worth tens or hundreds of millions of dollars a few extra bucks? Of course not!

Every other argument is a moot point to me. If I hadn't pirated Photoshop and other software when I was a poor kid I wouldn't have the six figure career I have today. The ultrarich steal from us every day in more ways than I can count. Maybe when they start being held accountable I will start caring about their bottom line.

I didn't find this to be overly dramatic or sensationalized. I enjoy knowing when one of the people I regularly watch are in fact assholes. Note, he didn't say they were assholes. He merely repeated what they did and called out issues. He said he wouldn't be covering the channel anymore after their response. Just decent journalism in my opinion.

I tried to watch the Thursday night football recap yesterday and accidentally opened YouTube instead of smarttube. I was shocked. I watched a minute of ads to start and one minute in I had another minute of ads. YouTube was basically unwatchable.

"... not going to change anything"

Yet look what happened to the fediverse. I wouldn't be here without his boneheaded move. So it already changed things for me and thousands more like me. I don't plan on going back.

Side note: I don't know if I was clinically dead in any of these.

I have three experiences. When I was 10 I was hit by an SUV travelling 50+ mph while walking across a highway. It knocked my shoes off and threw me dozens of feet. I still don't remember anything. Apparently I was unconscious for awhile. First responder said they saved my life while waiting for an air lift to take me to the hospital. It was the kind of nothing when you sleep and wake up.

The second I mixed a bunch of drugs. I think I was on 5 different ones. I took an absolutely massive rip of air duster and instantly my body was gone and so was anything resembling reality. I remember thinking ohhh I'm dead. My being and/or individuality was melting / merging into this infinitely recursuve fractal pattern. The sense I was an individual was an illusion. Then I snapped back into consciousness.

The third I definitely don't think I was dead, but it was a very relevant dream. The kind of dream that is so vivid it is indistinguishable from reality. I was completely sober at this point in my life (in part because of the experience above and another experience with hallucinogens where I saw the exact same thing the VFX artists made in the exorcism of emily rose, but I saw it before the movie was even made).

The dream started with me at my own funeral. I was for lack of a better word a spirit. I've never had dreams like this before or after.

The most fascinating thing was the sense of need and/or desire was completely gone. I felt the most free I had ever felt in my life. But I did have tasks. I had to visit my best friend Brant. He was in a very dark small place that I kind of transported to he was dead/ a spirit too. He apparently hasn't had a source of light here and I apparently had a small bit of shine. Because the room lit up a bit when I entered. We laughed about how weird it was that there were shadows even though we were semi transparent. Then my dad (whom I never saw but apparently was guiding me through my tasks) said I don't know how long you have left you need to go. So I left and I visited/transported to my mom who was also a spirit. We danced together. She was skinny and wearing a bright red dress. There was more light here but it was still nondescript. Then I woke up .

I sobbed like a baby for probably 30 minutes when I woke up. The biggest change was that I had desires again. I desperately wanted to stay in that state I was in during the dream. The best I can describe it is if you had a good job, had great sex, ate an amazing meal, than sat in your most comfortable chair next to the people you love, for a brief moment you wouldn't feel any base human level desire just a vague satisfaction. It was like that but times 100 and it was just the default state.

Since they dream I've only told it to strangers and Brant. Brant had since died via suicide at age 25. My mom who has been obese most of my life, has lost significant amounts of weight and now owns a strikingly similar dress. Honestly I don't know what to make of it. It still spooks me. It changed my life.

Programming teams I've worked with are a joke.

Company A: We got hacked and the lead dev argued for days it wasn't a hack. Malware was actively being served to customers during this time period because she refused to deal with it and there was no security team.

Company B: programming team was the IT guys nephew and some random UI designer who hadn't finished college and was never able to be employed after finishing college..

Company C: We interviewed a candidate who was way over qualified and would make our life so easy because he was eager and hungry. Instead we hired a bootcamper who had never heard of docker (half our infra is docker), react, or anything other than vanilla JavaScript. She failed our practical but still got hired because the hiring manager wanted and assistant. She has become a glorified project manager, but still has the title software engineer.

Bin Laden was terrible but I don't know about him and hitler in the same category.

He watched thousands of his own people and civilians get killed by the US before he reacted. Was his reaction wrong? Yes. Should he have stood trial in the US? Yes. Is he on the same scale as hitler? Not even close.

You realize the people who attacked them are also semites right? Semite doesn't equal Jewish. Israel doesn't equal Judaism.

There are Jews in the US who are critical of the nation state of Israel. Curious how that fits in your framework. You think they are just ethnomasocists?

There was a time that I thought people didn't understand the consequences. Now I realize that most people are just entirely apathetic.

I've been using cuda for cracking hashes without issue. Now if someone at Nvidia could work on not making their driver suck at daily driving on Linux it would be great

When Windows 10 hits EOL we might actually arrive at the year of Linux. I've been daily driving Arch (obligatory, I use arch btw) for the past 7 months and aside from a few hiccups where I tried to tweak absolutely everything and NVIDIA shenanigans, neither of which was the fault of the underlying kernel or OS, it has been dreamy. Never going back.

It's like saying airplanes are completely harmless. Compared to cars sure, you are much less likely to die in one, but it isn't a nill chance.

It took me way too long in life to realize you can't change other people. There is a famous Persian poet (Rumi) who stated "when I was younger I wanted to change the world. Now I want to change myself." Really it's made me a lot happier as well. No more stressing over why people don't believe me or spending hours in pointless arguments. Just focus on what I know is needs improvement in my life.

I should have left reddit a long time ago and I even tried a few times, but the lack of an alternative to keep me connected (it was my only social media) always had me coming back. So I'm proud to say I'm at least a week without any reddit whatsoever, not even peaking in my rearview mirror at this point.

Remember you are not dealing with a massive corporation.

Some random dude made this app. This same dude was just tasked with managing dozens of contributors to the code base. Well organized and establishped companies struggle with increasing a department two fold overnight.

I think the dev is doing great. I understand your concern and it is a valid one, but I think we should try to set the tone around people joining that this is not reddit and due to the way it is structured and developed there will be different kinds of hiccups. Also it wasn't like reddit didn't have issues with updates breaking things.

Pretty much every company 90% of the tech infastructure I've worked for is held together with 10 year old sun dried rubber bands.

I've been working on switching careers for the last six or so months. Made a lot more progress after the protests and have a final interview on Thursday. Please send prayers and/or good vibes my way. Switching from Marketing to Cybersecurity. One less talented marketing person makes the world a little less cluttered with people buying shit they don't need.

Besides that specifically since the protests started I've been researching and thinking about learning to play piano. It's amazing how much time I wasted scrolling endlessly on Reddit.

Only one million. Apparently the IRL answer is come talk to me when your company makes the fortune 500.

Is there a government that isn't shitty? American here. It's all I've ever known. Strongly considering moving to South East Asia because it's a little less imperial-y. But I fully expect to be disappointed by the government in all kinds of new ways.

My friends started calling me a cat because they said I had 9 lives. lol

This. I attended several concerts and recitals when I was in college. A girl I was seeing was actually music major. Now I'm a hick who just happened to get a degree and enjoy classical music. But I felt like a fish out of water before and after the concerts. Concerts themselves were excellent.

Yes but what if the people choose a terrible representative. We need a system that limits their options to people we choose. Ideally they only get two options we vetted.

But I'm afraid that won't even be enough, we should come up with a system where the people aren't directly voting on those representatives but other people will then go and vote on behalf of the people. That way we can divide things so even if the people vote with a majority we can still claim they didn't get enough electoral votes to win. Since these are next level voters we can call them something like a college of electors. We should also make sure these electors are not distributed equally among the population.

I'm afraid that still wouldn't be enough for the ruling class to maintain power. Maybe we should also divide their votes into arbitrary lines. We can call them districts. They won't correspond to any other districts and we can arbitrarily change districts when it's in our favor.

Even with all that I think we will have to occasionally come up with more measures. Maybe we can jail people for minor crimes more than every other nation in the world and take away their voting rights after they've been jailed. We can target specific groups and make new laws that allow us to remove from the system those whose votes would be unfavorable.

Perhaps then and only then will we be a beacon of freedom and hope to all those who wish to be a nation ruled by the people.

Cybersecurity and Penetration Testing/Hacking is more skill based than most industries. It's just a matter of learning the tools and getting good at it.

Such a noob didn't even pipe it through grep to block advertising. Get outta here corporate shill.

A lot of that has more to do with modern politics than with religion, most of that is a reaction to Western Imperialism. Look at the way women dressed in the 50s and 60s in Tehran. Even Indonesia, the country with more Muslims than anywhere on earth had a female prime minister before Hilary even ran.

I think it's the fact that it isn't mainstream is what makes it tolerable. Once you get everyone on a platform it turns into garbage. Just dumb people amplifying other dumb people.

So I'm interested to see how federation plays out long term. I don't think the majority of reddit will come here for awhile so at the least I'm enjoying it while I can.

How are you finding Palestine in general. I'm planning a trip in a couple years to visit the done of the rock and although I'm a Muslim in a very white blonde hair blue eyed American with very limited Arabic skills.

Wow I'm definitely out of the loop. Any reason why?

I don't see how it is relevant, but if that is very important to you then you should also know that the Israelis attack the Palestinians basically every Ramadan.

This isn't true. SEO has been optimized to find good content that engaged users. Long gone are the days of cramming together keyword lists and throwing a few meta tags to rank high. Write high quality (preferably long form) content and it will pay dividends.

Any culture can be harmful and secular people can and often do good.

Jerboa working good for me after the update.

I'm sorry but in a "democracy" if neither candidate represents my main viewpoints I won't vote for either of them. My viewpoint is that corporate lobbying and the military industrial complex has systemically ruined politics in America. That's it. Fix either of those glaring issues and you get my vote. Republicans and Democrats have never delivered on that in my life. The "lesser of two evils" mentality means you are voting for evil by your own admission.

This is a very narrow viewpoint in my opinion. I'm not denying religion has caused harm, but a large portion of people have found it to be a means to do good (and I mean legit good that almost everyone can agree on, things like foodbanks, stopping addictions and so on)

All the Obama to Trump voters did that because they are sick of the political establishment. The danger to democrats isn't third parties but their inability to pass legislation the vast majority of Americans agree on.

Personal fireworks are illegal in my city as well. I personally love that everyone collectively says nahhhh we are going to do it anyways.

I don't set any off but I enjoy watching people have fun and it tends to be a pretty good show.
