Mastodon is a piece of software. I don't see anyone saying "phpBB" or "WordPress" has a massive child abuse material problem.

Has anyone in the history ever said "Not a good look for phpBB"? No. Why? Because it would make no sense whatsoever.

I feel kind of a loss for words because how obvious it should be. It's like saying "paper is being used for illegal material. Not a good look for paper."

What is the solution to someone hosting illegal material on an nginx server? You report it to the authorities. You want to automate it? Go ahead and crawl the web for illegal material and generate automated reports. Though you'll probably be the first to end up in prison.

When it's tech execs, they are "stressed out". If this about regular people the title would say they are alcoholics and drug addicts.

And that wouldn't even be inaccurate. You don't take pain killers for stress. If they wanted to manage stress, they would be taking benzos. They are just drug addicts.

but being able to decide after the fact that you want a heated steering wheel isn't one of them.

No one is bitching about being able to decide that you want a heated steering wheel. You can decide to install it on literally any car brand or model.

People are bitching about the hardware that they have paid for and they own being locked behind by a software paywall. This would cause a riot with practically any other consumer electronics. Imagine if the fingerprint scanner on your smartphone was an extra $50 to unlock? Or quick charge being an extra $75?

That would be the most anti-consumer horseshit we've seen, and that's exactly what Tesla is doing.

"Megacorporation Wins. Consumers lose again. "

Would be the correct title.

He hasnt fallen. He's always been an arrogant asshole of average intelligence at best.

Reddit/Twitter were just ignorant of it because "cool electric car space man!" He just kept the crazy mostly under wraps. But the arrogant and stupid was always on display if you bothered to look.

He wasnt being 80% Elon. You were just unaware of how shitty he was back then because everyone was kissing the ground he walked on.

He's always been a massive PoS, he was just better at keeping on the downlow.

I can 100% guarantee that the replacement system has already been designed and it's over the top scummy.

They are spreading out the negative news to leasen the PR impact.

Don't we already have pretty robust laws when it comes to person's likeness?

I presume most contracts cover this aspect mainly for the purposes of marketing and future references. Of course the actors probably didn't expect the extent the current technology could allow their likeness to be exploited.

It would probably make sense to require more specific contracts for this purpose, and have previously signed general contracts become insufficient for using actors' likeness for this purpose.

Musk is a manchild who can't handle being told "no", so that's a given.

But it's smart of her to put that out in advance. It informs Musk that she will stay out of his way, and she doesn't have to take the blame for idiotic decisions made by him.

What?

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202303

Under Standard Data Protection photos, general drive storage and device back up are not end-to-end encrypted. Meaning that Apple has full access to reading and analyzing them.

Under Advanced Data Protection which is an opt-in feature available since iOS 16.2, you can have those files end-to-end encrypted.

End-to-end encryption makes the user responsible for keeping an encryption key safe, irreversibly losing their data if they lose the key. It's not practical for the general population. I would guess its use is in low single digit percent of apple customers.

And this feature came out in December 2022. A bit over half a year ago. Unless your friend's NDA was super short, I presume the conversation took place before it was released. Either your friend was bullshitting you under an NDA or he's an idiot.

A $100 brother laser printer (2280dw but it has been discontinued). It's like a printer from an alternative universe where printers aren't evil.

Had it for about 6 years now. Printed thousands of pages and only needed to replace the ink cartridge a few times. Had no issues with 3-rd party cartridges. Surprisingly never required any maintenance.

Other laser printer brands that can probably perform similarly, but I can only vouch for this one.

get your credit card stolen.

Let's see... I don't provide my credit card to anyone when pirating. The only way they are getting my credit card is breaking into my house. (no, mkv files can't have viruses).

But I do need to provide my credit card info to HBO, which they store, on their likely poorly secured servers.

The number of credit cards stones from data leaks very likely exceeds the number of them stolen because someone got duped when trying to pirate.

"AI" is already handling the search for you. The big search engines are probably the first mass scale adopters of machine learning.

And they have lost the war with SEO spam to a hilarious extent. What makes you think the same won't happen with chat bot AIs? Bad actors (including PR agencies) will inevitably figure out where and how to spam comments in order to bias the AI models in favor of their agendas or products.

If the data they consume is filled with something like "fossil fuels don't cause global warming because XYZ", the chat bots will repeat it. They don't have the capacity to reason.

There hasn't been a reason to flood the internet with low effort spam because it's easily detected by humans who read it. But the ML algorithms will be a lot easier to trick.

As someone who would never pay for reddit coins or premium, it's still pretty easy to identify with them.

They paid for a product and now it's being removed with no compensation or refund. That's total bullshit regardless of what the product was.

Compression artifacts will exist as long as we use lossy video compression. You can however eliminate visible to the eye artifacts with high enough bitrate, but that has always been the case.

Considering the ungodly size of raw video or even video with lossless compression, we will need lossy compression for the next century.

It will only change if the bandwidth and storage become practically free, which would require some unforseen breakthrough in technology.

What in the fresh fuck are you talking about?

The overwhelmingly left leaning administration of Reddit want pro-Nazi spam accounts to convert the vehemently left leaning userbase of reddit into Republicans? This is some Alex Jones level shit.

They just want to force people into using the site and their app so they can serve ads and harvest user data. They are trying to IPO so they are doing everything to make it seem profitable in the short term, they don't care about the future of the site.

"I want it anyway, waaaah!".

He has the emotional maturity of a spoiled child. Once you see it, everything he does makes 10x more sense.

Using twitter for any kind of emergency communication is a very bad idea in the first place.

Twitter is doing everyone a favor by demonstrating exactly why that is.

The author of this article is a grade A dumbass, or it's a paid smear piece. Honestly I can't tell.

If he's comparing theoreticals, why not include the theoretical 44000Gbps of a fiber optic connection? If the author is somehow reading this: 44000 is more than 20!

No sugar added usually just means it's full of sugar originally found in the product. A "no sugar added" apple juice will still have an insanely unhealthy amount of sugar.

I don't know why you think it should mean no sweeteners. (most) sweeteners are categorically not sugar. If you want something not sweet, the label you're looking for is "unsweetened".

Besides, sugar is much worse for you than any artificial sweetener.

He's a selfish prick who will talk over you about whatever dumb shit comes to mind because he only cares about himself. He will also guilt you into feeling bad shit like not saying happy birthday to him

???????????

They can't. Not without removing the part that makes reddit worthwhile, which are small dedicated communities.

Sure, an AI can moderate shit like /pics /politics /funny /gaming. Those are basically just garbage article/repost feeds anyway.

Can an AI moderate say... buildapcsales? Where you need a human moderator to verify if the deal is valid, add additional info to the flair and mark deals as expired? Technically yes, but it would require a specially trained AI, that knows how to scrape particular websites and avoid detection, which is not a great look for reddit and is also a ton of work.

What about a TV show subreddit? There has been instances where episodes were leaked, and the moderators had to protect the community from spoilers. Can an AI do it? Again, if it's manually trained on this new data it could. But are reddit employees going to illegally download leaked episodes to feed the to the algorithm?

At that point, you'd be spending more time and money on babysitting each AI than if you just moderated manually.

It's their "use in case of emergency" tool.

It was popular so they are bringing it out as a distraction.

As opposed to moving to a decentralized instance?

Every lemmy instance is centralized, it's not a bloody blockchain.

The difference between "possibly cancerous" and "fully cancerous" is that the former is not confirmed to have the property of causing cancer.

Radiation on the other hand is known to be carcinogenic.

To use your analogy, we know that there are bacteria that cause infections and bacteria that are harmless to humans. Let's say we have bacteria A that is known to cause infection but not always in everyone. Then we have a bacteria B, which is potentially able to cause infection. We don't know for certain that it can, but we also don't know that it can't.

And yes, it's a pretty fucking useless designation, and WHO is wasting everyone's time and causing undue panic. Let's not forget how they completely fucked the world with their atrocious handing of Covid in the early stages of the outbreak.

A burst of traffic doesn't mean much if it doesn't stay. It's a safe assumption that most people participating in "fuck spez" already had an account, so they aren't getting many new users from this.

Maybe he prefers to hand over his data to Google rather than Microsoft.

That could indicate a lot of things. It would be very difficult to distinguish a torrent from something like cloud folder sync. And that would still be a statistical guess. No ISP is going to go after customers because their VPN traffic is potentially torrent traffic.

Besides, even if they could detect that torrenting is taking place, they will not know what data is being transferred from and to where. It's a meme, but torrents are actually sometimes used for non-copyright infringing data.

I would agree if Onlyfans creators put even a shred of effort into their content. Most of all it is just them sitting in front of a camera for a few minutes.

They aren't making money by making porn, they are making money by fostering parasocial relationships with people desperate for intimacy.

Most of them anyway. And no, I never subscribed to any, I pirate it. And the noise to content ratio is like 99 to 1.

Only 7.1 billion out of 44 billion is from outside investments. The remaining ~36 billion was paid by Musk.

People need to stop with the conspiracies. Musk isn't playing 4d chess by tanking Twitter, he's just an idiot.

The intent is to provide moderators with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Governments should build their own emergency communication channels instead of relying on platforms that are entirely out of their control.

If anything, it's a good early wake up call.

The percentage of users that solely used the 3rd party apps to view and comment was relatively small.

Reddit doesnt produce any content itself, so viewing and commenting in general isn't particularly important. What matters more are valuable contributions. I would posit that 3rd party app users provided disproportionately more valuable content than the official app users.

There is already an army of repost bots which aren't going away. The bots don't care about the health of the platform, so we can assume they are at maximum repost saturation.

And reposts still require new content generation to make reposts. You can't repost the same stale content perpetually.

I don't think reddit is going to just die. But it's popularity and userbase can dwindle over time. Tumblr still exists, but it's a shell of its former self.

Why do you have mixed feelings? Has massive industry consolidation ever benefitted the customers in the long run?

The US hasn't shown much interest in breaking up big companies in the past two decades. Once this is done, it practically can't be undone.

Microsoft is more powerful than most world governments. And it keeps expanding and growing.

Vivaldi is chromium based, so it's pretty much chrome with a different UI.

Yep. You can't tell me you don't know a manager who would completely unintentionally do just as shit of a job as Musk.

Well, Musk is that manager when he's unrestrained. The way he was publicly arguing with software engineers who built the software while himself being clueless, should have been the last confirmation anyone ever needed.

Musk is perpetually sitting at the peak of Mount Stupid of the Dunning Kruger scale.

So then buy unsweetened tea. We already have a term for things that aren't sweet.

https://www.amazon.com/Pure-Leaf-Unsweetened-Brewed-Calories/dp/B015Z6WJDY/

I seriously don't understand why you want the "no sugar added" label to have factually incorrect requirements.

You're paying for premium, but you're not paying it to people producing the content you enjoy. You're paying it to a middle man parasite. Content creators get a tiny fraction of your money.

Paying because they made it deliberately difficult to use without paying is akin to giving the bully your lunch money because it's better "money value" than standing up for yourself. That's not something I can do without losing respect for myself.

And my "trying to side step the ads" has so far taken a total of 30 seconds - installing uBlock origin, which I would have done anyway.

Besides, to use premium you need to be logged in. Being logged in Google outside of a contained environment is idiotic if you have a shred of respect for your own privacy.

I am all for "gig apps" being required to pay minimum wage.

But the minimum wage in New York is $15 as far as I can tell. Why are delivery apps seemingly being required to pay a different minimum wage? I am not aware of any other case where the minimum wage depends on the profession.

I find this kind of policy very troubling. Would anyone be ok with accountants having a $25 minimum wage and teachers having $17 minimum wage?
