Hahaha next level pathetic!

Rust. It's so good, it can't be popular enough.

If jetbrains is that much better really depends on the language. Also, jetbrains shit is damn expensive, so not a fair comparison.

"trustworthy AI"

Why? Why can't we have even a single decent browser? Servo is my last hope.

Rust by a big margin.

That's a good initiative from google to put more tracktion behind firefox again. Its userbase and amount of supporters will skyrocket!

Edge is pretty good...

...for downloading Firefox.

I wouldn't even use a proprietary browser if they'd pay me for it. Let alone a chromium based one.

What's wrong with pocket integration?Nobody forces you to use it. Apart from that it stores user data e2e encrypted, mozilla has no access to your data (as opposed to chromes sync functionality). Imho, a browser should not block some content by default. But ad-blocking must be easy to enable/install. All of that's the case in FF so I see no reason not to recommend it.

Seriously though, why? Is there historic reasons for that? Did they have to pay extra for more letters back in the day?

That's application specific. In firefox you can set a main password to protect your saved passwords.

Some ancient protocols get replaced gradually though. Look at http3 not using TCP anymore. I mean at least it's something.

FCK DSCRD!

(They should use lemmy instead :-P)

Until someone can provide actual, techological disadvantages of systemd over currently available, viable alternatives, this is an irrelevant culture war for me. I feel like some people made hating system-d a core element of their identity and personality.

JS is horse shit. Instead of trying to improve it or using that high level scripting language as a compilation target (wtf?!), we should deprecate it entirely and put all efforts into web assembly.

Somehow, the "sparkling" part makes it even more gross xD

A chocolate starfish would be the perfect pairing dish to this drink I'd say!

20% is a LOT. That's probably because of the random shit that nobody ever asked for but windows is always doing in the background anyway. Building a search index, windows update (which consumes an insane amount of CPU for a completely unreasonable amount of time sometimes), other individual updater services (because there can't be one program that updates everything because every vendor does their own proprietary bullshit to handle updates), compressing and sending all you personal data to microsoft and of course the pre-installed McAffee (on trial license) that works hard to make your system less secure (that HP probably installed for you because apperently you haven't paid enough money for the computer, so you must pay with your patience and your privacy as well). Depending on the benchmark, the pathetic legacy file system windows uses might also play a role.

I don't understand what's not realistic about expecting from a company that markets itself as privacy focused to not add surveillance fascist services to their website. It's not like they demand system76 to implement something crazy difficult. Quite the opposite, they just want them to not do something. That shit doesn't add itself to a website. So just don't fucking do it and you're good. What's unrealistic about that?

Yes, I can't wait! Firefox usage will skyrocket :D

Simple fix: Install firefox and never use a chromium based browser again. :-P

Pure Debian is the way.

Hello world in Java:

    public static endangered therefore protected final void main(String[] args) {
        System.prepareTheOutputBufferForPrintingAsTheNextStatementWillDoSo(args);
        System.in.out.in.out.shake.it.all.around("Java is a programming language " +
            "invented by the intelligent monkeys " +
            "working at Sun Microsystems.");

    }

I can't help you but I just came here to say that I also very much dislike the trend that everything has to look flat. Imho visual, simulated depth (through shadows, gradients, etc.) can make UIs look actually much cleaner, because hierarchy, grouping of elements and differentiation between buttons/text inputs and non-interactive elements is often much more obvious on first sight.

I guess some "moderators from r/ModCoord" are Virgin Mods then...

Debian testing (more up to date than ubuntu, rolling release, much more stable than the name suggests, truly free as in freedom)

Is there an alternative meaning of the term "selfhosted" that I'm not aware of?

@lostlemmings

Rage against the machine never specified what kind of machine they meant. Now we know it was probably a printer.

Sorry, I know this is not helping, but I love that joke :D

I'm mainly using duckduckgo for 7 years now. If I can't find something with it, I try startpage, which sometimes helps.

Seriously, who on earth uses facebook? Lol

The only website on this graphic that has some actual value (apart from the fediverse of course) is youtube.

Unfortunately most plugins don't work on linux though. Hopefully that will change too. Bitwig is another amazing DAW that does have a linux version. You can even install it via flathub!

My GF is happy with Linux Mint Cinnamon! Even my parents use it :)

There is no "gnome" version of linux mint, but they probably meant the "cinnamon" version (which I would also recommend for a newcomer).

Since when is reaper open source software? Do you have a link to the repo?

It could be a tie or it could be a blend of the chairs arm rest and the background. We'll never know!

No!

Thanks, everyone knows they have a weird coc. It obviously only applies to the maintainers/members of the project though and is more of a statement than something that is actually enforced. As a convinced atheist, I also find it pretty weird but see absolutely no reason at all to avoid sqlite because of that. What matters is: Code quality/correctness (which is absolutely superb when it comes to sqlite) and license, of course. Why would I care about the authors beliefs? They don't even directly benefit from me using their product.

The webaite could be nicer, but I wouldn't call that a big problem. Plain debian is mostly used for webservers or by users with at least some linux experience. These won't struggle that much with clicking the right link on the website.

The upcoming (recently released) thunderbird version might be what you're looking for! It's not yet in most official repos though.

Servers cost money, nothing can change that. But you could use a computer at home thats running all the time and then use a dynamic dns service (there are free ones) to access your home server from everywhere. That way you've got the electricity cost of an always running computer, so it's not entirely free either. Maybe use a sbc like raspberrypi, bananapi, odroid or the like, these are very efficient.

If you consider using a paid VPS instead, I can recommend contabo, since they are very affordable and work like a charm, e.g. the 200GB SSD variant for 4,50€/month: https://contabo.com/de/vps/

I wouldn't use multiple partitions anymore. First of all, you would have to decide how large your home and system partitions are which can be annoying later if you either want to install large programs/games on your system or, say, download large videos into your home partition. Apart from that, SSDs life span is reduced if you partition them, because the controller then can't distribute writes across the while disk, so the cells will not get worn out uniformly.

Comparing browsers peformance is not that simple, due to the immense complexity. The only part that's significantly faster in chrome is the JS engine (V8). The CSS engine, for example, is much faster in firefox (try stylebench if you don't believe me) - at least it was last time I tried it. Here are some benchmark results for comparison: https://arewefastyet.com/linux64/benchmarks/overview?numDays=60

Also, firefox uses much less resources (CPU/Ram), so it consumes less battery and doesn't slow down other programs as much while it's running in the background.
