It does feel a little dead here. Right now it’s mostly memes, meta discussions, or Reddit hate. And the crowd is a very specific type of hyper aware internet dweller (myself included).

Reddit isn’t worth using without third party apps, and it’s the only social media I used before Lemmy, so I’m spending a lot more time off my phone nowadays. I only check the daily top on Lemmy once a day instead of compulsively every time I touch my phone. Guess that’s a good thing.

I think there’s a lot of self selection going on. Most people who migrated here did it based on principles (or a persecution complex), so of course they will have lots of political opinions, often extreme. Frankly, it’s getting a little tiring seeing it everywhere. Even on gaming subs it seems like every other post results in a discussion about the evils of capitalism.

Lupe Fuentes. What’s worse is that she was already registered in multiple US studios since she made films here, too, so the prosecution could have easily verified her documents, which the defense attorney asked her to do. Instead, she had the CBP agent who made the arrest and an “expert” doctor testify that Lupe couldn’t have been more than 13.

Good article on it here: https://reason.com/2010/05/03/porn-star-saves-man-from-incom/

I disagree. While I do like that the discussions and top level comments are not nearly as homogenized as Reddit eventually became, I’m really missing the niche communities. I wasn’t subscribed to any large subs on Reddit, so my feed was basically just a curated list of discussions for my hobbies. No memes, news, pop culture, internet drama, or politics. Right now, that’s just not possible on Lemmy due to the low population.

There’s a ton of these accounts. They gather karma with scripts that randomly repost top 100 all time posts on big subs and then delete them so their account looks clean. Then they sell it to ad companies that post client sanctioned posts and comments and get paid based on user engagement with the brand.

Check out r/hailcorporate. A huge portion of Reddit is just guerrilla advertising.

To that end, Google recently unveiled a new feature called Perspectives, which aims to surface discussion forums and videos from various social media platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and Quora.

Google used to have this years ago. It was just a search toggle called "discussions" and it would prioritize search results from forums, comments, reddit, etc. It was extremely useful to find real information while avoiding SEO blogspam ad platforms, which is why they removed it in the first place.

10 years ago I was like “why tf would I want to watch someone play a video game when I could just play it myself?”

Now I’m like “why tf would I play this game when I could just watch someone else?”

I guess I’m still interested in what’s going on in gaming in general, but I don’t have any desire to go through all the bullshit of a modern AAA game with a huge repetitive open world, dozens of half assed shallow mechanics (rpg/perk system, loot, crafting etc.), homogenized design, predatory DLC/mtx, and all that. I’d rather play Factorio and watch a streamer play whatever hot new game people are into.

What exactly is a promise from Facebook worth? You saw what happened to Palmer Luckey (although he is wiping those tears with crisp hundred dollar bills).

Halo Wars. It's designed for gamepad and the campaign is pretty decent. Co op works well too.

r/redditrequest is a disgusting feeding frenzy right now. For every mod that's continuing the protest or has already been "fired", there's a dozen people desperately begging to be allowed to do free labor for that tiny bit of authority they'll get on their corner of reddit.

I got one even though I deleted all my posts and comments months ago. I have not engaged on Reddit since then.

Also, what is the threshold? I only have 14k post and 19k comment karma which is pretty low considering the size and age of Reddit. I don’t think I’ve ever even posted anything in a large sub, just niche hobby ones.

Are they just asking everyone now?

I don’t think so. I mean, some publications might, but big ones like Bloomberg and Reuters have acknowledged since the IPO that the major investors believe it is well overvalued. IIRC they reported that Fidelity and Blackrock gave it a $5B valuation. I recall another major investor cited the difficulty of feeding paid ads to its user base in the current community based format, and unsuccessful attempts to push profile/user centric “feeds” (similar to Facebook and Twitter) instead.

Sometimes it does seem like everyone’s on a soapbox or cynical crusade about some shit or another and you’re a bad person if you don’t know or care.

Lots of places on Reddit and Twitter also feel that way. I think it’s just an inherent part of mass online interaction.

I guess it’s combined 25k since I got the message. A massive number of casual users will qualify for that considering Reddit has been around for over a decade.

Are they really just spamming out a scam email to hundreds of thousands of their users? They can’t get a good enough valuation with real investors so they’re banking on having enough non-financially savvy people in their massive user base to be able to cash out with a valuation they know is bullshit? Really?

Considering there are legal requirements to become an accredited investor for private companies, I’m surprised something like this (and on this scale) is even allowed. Isn’t this fraud?

Wow I guess they’re not even trying to hide it anymore.

Your concern is well placed. Better to enjoy it for what it is, essentially the next Larian/Divinity game. If you want a successor to Baldur’s Gate, it’s in the Pillars of Eternity and Pathfinder series.

The new overlay looks super nice.

I just want to know where it is so I can make sure to avoid it.

I’m the same: I used it a ton when I first got it and now it’s collecting dust. Here are my personal issues with it:

  • I find it a little too big and bulky for 2D, retro, and lo fi games, but too low res and weak for a good experience on most larger/newer 3D games.
  • The controls and screen size/res are not adequate for most PC mkb oriented games.
  • The size, battery life, and low screen visibility in bright places make it not worth traveling with compared to my Switch.

I guess I essentially just wanted a Switch that could use my Steam library for 2D indies and older games.

Aside from that, I think I also kinda bought it to rejuvenate my interest in gaming, but it only did that for a few months. That has nothing to do with the Deck though.

I tried it first when I was too young to understand game mechanics or English.

Knowing English doesn’t help much in EYE tbh.

Downvoted for stating an easily verifiable fact lol

I hope things get better for your friends. Tech is taking a hit right now.

I had trouble finding work after college, had to work some shit jobs and move around a lot, but I was never out of options, never at risk of going hungry or not sleeping in a bed. It takes a hell of a lot to go hungry or homeless in the US. There’s an insane amount of industry, wealth, and opportunity here.

Meanwhile, in my home country, there is 70% inflation in the past year. There is war everywhere on the borders (and conscription). There is no opportunity for young people. Inflation has destroyed most people’s ability to emigrate or get an American/European education. They’re just stuck there with a crumbling economy, a refugee crisis (about 10% of the population), an increasingly religious and oppressive government, and the constant threat of war.

It’s hard to see so many posts like these complaining about how hard everything is for people living in US, UK, Canada, France etc. from people with the most disposable income in the world, the highest carbon footprints, the biggest cars, the most meat consumption, good labor laws.

Yes, we should still strive to improve things. There are tons of problems in this system that result in conflict and inequality. But this kind of article is the epitome of first world problems from privileged people.

This whole site is filled with these cynical, self-pitying posts so we can all read them and think “yeah, everything is so unfair for me, everyone else had it so much easier” like everything is happening to us, and we have no control or agency in our own happiness and satisfaction. We bear no responsibility for our own situation. We live in the best part of the world in the best time of human history, yet we’re all miserable because everything is so terrible and hard.

It’s a great game by all measures, but it really feels more like a sequel to the last two Divinity games rather than the Baldur’s Gate series. The only thing it really has in common with the old games is the setting, a few recurring characters, and the fact that it’s based on D&D. Otherwise, they are about as different as CRPGs can get.

If you want a spiritual successor to the old infinity engine games, look at the two Pillars of Eternity games and the two Pathfinder games.

Babe wake up. New US weapons package just dropped.

I believe the N64 was huge in the US, Canada, and Japan, but PlayStation dominated that generation overall. I always preferred the PS graphics, the library, and the controller personally.

It’s kinda weird that the N64 seems to have a much bigger legacy. I think it’s because of Nintendo’s ability to make timeless games that are remembered more fondly than PS ones, but I would argue that games like Spyro, Tekken 3, GT2, and SotN aged just as gracefully as the N64 classics like SM64, Smash, Mario Kart, and OoT. Plus you can play them on a normal controller.

Same. I know many who you would never guess have as much money as they do. And I know some broke people who act and spend like they’re rolling in it.

There are plenty of employee owned businesses. You should work for one, or, better yet, make one.

In Western news and media, everything has to boil down to a good vs evil story. It’s part of the reason our society has become so polarized. In reality, there’s often no good sides in a conflict.

I can partly understand the frustration. If you bought a Series X/S instead of a PS5, you must have put some amount of faith in Xbox exclusives to make it worth missing out on Sony exclusives. Now, after an abysmal half-generation, it seems like Xbox is giving up on exclusives altogether. So what was the point in buying an Xbox? If PS5 gets all Xbox exclusives, then an Xbox retroactively becomes a really dumb purchase.

It’s the same in biotech and pharma. We are basically always hiring skilled labor, even during layoffs. You can get a 6 week certificate that will land you a manufacturing job for $80k per year plus OT. No college needed. Many companies will even pay for it if you agree to a 6 month contract with them.

Is there something wrong with rice and beans? I eat both of those daily. If the only thing that gives you pleasure is a fat and salt filled cheeseburger, that’s a separate issue.

And anyway, this argument went from “it’s too expensive” to “it takes too much time” to “it’s not good”. We can just agree to disagree. No one is forcing you to eat something you don’t want.

Eating beans, rice, lentils, peas, etc. is way cheaper than meat. A 4 lbs bag of chickpeas is $6 and provides 6,500 calories of mostly dietary fiber and protein.

Cooking is something you have to do, just like laundry and washing yourself. I’m not sure if this is a western thing or what, but for most people in the world, the less money you have, the more you cook. Eating prepared foods and meat is expensive.

I’ve had the same thought, but sucking it up would mean using the official Reddit app or old Reddit on my phone/tablet (at least until they kill that, too), which are both just too annoying of an experience to be worth it to me. It’s not a principle thing, it’s a usability thing.

For the time being, I’ve just accepted that it’s gone and I’ll miss it for a good while. I’ve been browsing some old school forums for my random hobbies (Gear Page, Hard Forum, Steam, Fresh Loaf etc.), but otherwise, I’ve found other things to occupy my down time until either Lemmy’s smaller communities take off or something else fills the anonymous-niche-hobby-social-media void. Got me some cool books and Picross on Switch.

Is there still an advantage to doing it this way after the desktop Big Picture update? Is it different than using the controller configuration menu on the host PC?

I don’t think they care about this feature. Presumably, they don’t see enough people using it to justify properly maintaining it, much less improving it.

As others have said, Moonlight + Sunshine works much better. Add Moonlight as a non-Steam game on your Deck and set it to launch Big Picture directly on your host. That’s my setup and it’s pretty seamless. Ever since the Big Picture update for the desktop client, I forget I’m even streaming sometimes because the interface is the same.

Songs of Conquest if you’re looking at turn based 4X games.

It’s not exclusive to older generations unfortunately.
