Despite the "get rich quicker" mentality,Kiyosaki's books were revolutionary for me. They basically taught me that it's impossible for the working class to get rich. You need to invest in either a business or real estate.

The missing part is that it's practically impossible to invest in a business or real estate. You need vast amounts of capital or a loan with nearly zero interest. Oh and the ruling class has been sucking us dry for decades.

Still, his books are very valuable knowledge.

Ah, yes, nothing like forbidding people from calling out fascism to prove your government isn't fascist.

Seems the novelty VW engineers had to be reminded of the first item in the Unix philosophy:

Make each program do one thing, and do it well.

Buttons already had this. Each single button did one and only one thing: Turn a feature on or off, or in the case of the radio, switch stations.

We didn't need complicated menus to navigate. Press the appropriate button, and voilá. It was simple. It worked.

Who the fuck came up with the idea of having to use touch menus? I have no idea, but I really hope they got fired.

The year is 2020.

Covid was in full force, and we were suddenly assigned impossible tasks in very little time. Not to mention we hadn't been given a raise in more than 2 years, not because the company finances were bad, but because the owner was a greedy bastard.

Then one person decided to quit. And another. And another.

What did the owner do? Raise salaries to keep the personnel? No, he let them leave and loaded all the work onto us.

I decided I wouldn't be the one crushed by that load, so I was the next to leave. Bye bye.

Plot Twist: They've already gone rogue. Right now they're just bullying to get what they want.

They can just go fuck themselves. 🖕

While silicon is abundant on Earth, monocrystalline silicon is incredibly hard to produce. You need to use either chemical purification methods that use silicon compound gases, or to use a slow process that starts with a crystal seed to slowly grow giant rods of pure silicon under a chamber filled with argon gas, and many things can go wrong.

Semiconductor-grade silicon needs to be 99.999999% pure to guarantee good yields of microchips.

More on this process here:

https://hackaday.com/2021/11/15/mining-and-refining-pure-silicon-and-the-incredible-effort-it-takes-to-get-there/

OTOH, there are more (and cheaper) ways of grafene production:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphene_production_techniques

(On a related note, you might be interested in the history of the transistor to know the arduous path that humanity took just to get where we are )

EDIT: Apart from the manufacturing methods, graphene might offer a way to lower the voltage required to operate. Not only that, but electron mobility in graphene is 10 times higher than in silicon.

Good graphene chips might one day require much less power than silicon, and this will be a boon for computationally intensive applications such as 3D rendering or AI.

There's still a long way to go, tho.

People on Mastodon are preemptively blocking federation. What can I say 🤷

I would classify this as sexual harassment. It's no different from being sent obscene videos over email. The gravity resides in that they're sexual assault videos with the recipient being the victim.

His password may be ripeadmin, but that admin looked pretty green to me.

The very nature of the fediverse makes fragmentation part of it. Since it's not centralized, control is distributed to the different instance admins. It's only natural that people with different opinions will want to split from each other, and that's without taking into account the levels of toxicity allowed by different moderators.

Is an instance allowing racists to thrive in there? Of course it will be blocked by leftists, since banning is a concept that no longer applies.

Let me repeat for clarity: You CANNOT ban someone from the fediverse, you can ONLY defederate from them.

And don't tell me it's that much different from reddit, I've seen political subs denying access to people simply based on what other subreddits they're subscribed to.

Would you rather have a single hierarchical "network" where an asshole dictator decides who is and who isn't allowed to post? Of course not, otherwise you wouldn't be here.

Federation implies defederating instances you're not comfortable with.

And that's perfectly fine, because safety comes first.

My freedom of association necessarily implies that I'm free NOT to associate with people I don't like, and my insurance admin should be able to make sure I'm free from harassment by those same people.

Want to solve this issue? Solve human nature first.

Did the ordinance specify that the app companies would have to absorb the costs and NOT pass them to the users? No? Ah, well, that explains it then.

If you don't give a shit abount Facebook enabling genocide, amplifying white supremacism or, you know, selling milluons of users' private data to the Kremlin, then sure, why not.

This isn't about elitism, this is about a known bad actor threatening to harvest our conversations without our fucking permission, or using Microsoft's tactic of "embrace and extend" to destroy the competition.

Anyone can implement ActivityPub. We have no problem with that. Facebook is a corporation whose business strategy has consistently been about harvesting users' data and selling it to political advertisers.

As usual, redditors lemmings commenting on an article they haven't read. This isn't just about your brand appearing on a standard porn site. It's also about your brand appearing on disinformation sites like Breitbart. Also, if your ads appear on those sites, it means that very probably your money is ALSO going to those sites.

I read a Twitter post of hers a few years ago where she was extremely apologetic towards China, saying that Americans listened to a lot of propaganda and so on. Now I'm starting to wonder if it was really her who made that twitter post.

Finally someone gets it!

Okay you're being a bigot. You know why? Because people aren't demanding to be called "your highness". They are just asking to be called with their preferred probouns. Putting neo pronouns aside, it's not a heavy burden to be called he / she / it / they.

And this is the internet! The are no bodies, only usernames. Why do you care if a person claiming to be a girl demands to be called a she? Oh my fucking god, what a scandal! The oppression imposed upon you, a free citizen, demanding that you have to use a pronoun different than "he" on the internet! The world is doomed! 😱 /s

What you're really asking for is the "right" to harass trans people (by misgendering them) because you don't like them and abhor the idea of women having something extra down there. (it's not like they're plotting to force sex you, just leave them be, okay?) Not only that, you're so obsessed with hating them that you went out of your way to post your biased opinion ON A LINUX FORUM.

You're being a transphobic asshole, and the mods were perfectly right in banning you.

Just accept that there are different people in the world. If you have a problem with that, maybe it's you who needs professional help.

And then people wonder why we're so scared of Facebook if the fediverse is "supposed to be open".

The answer is literally in front of you, people!

The fact that we're reading and commenting about it on Lemmy is satisfying, despite the sadness of the situation. It's like watching the city burn after you moved away and saying "wow, I guess I really took the right choice by leaving."

Noe consider how the number will increase AFTER they start federating!

A: "Gee, I wonder what we could do "

B: "Make the streets bike and pedestrian friendly!"

A: "We really need a high tech solution."

B: "Bring back public transport!"

A: "If there was someone to show us the way..."

B: "Reform building regulations!"

A: "Oh, I know! Let's use AI!"

B: 🤦

Don't think this is a strange phenomenon or that it's permanent. I've seen Mastodon (and Pleroma and Misskey etc) instances get born and die regularly. This is because it's easy to set up an instance but it's also easy to fall in an economic problem or just give up.

Not everyone is ready to set up their own instance; it requires dedication and resources.

As a decentralized platform, Bluesky’s code is completely open source,

As long as a company is in control, being decentralized doesn't mean shit.

Deus Ex predicted the future once again.

Good callout. Even Twitter images shouldn't be hot linked but copied and pasted for preservation purposes; if a copyright takedown happens, then it happens. But at least we don't risk having access cut because of a corporate killswitch.

CW: Trump, uspol

Trump separating families at the border. Children being put in cages. Americans waving the fucking nazi flag.

It's one thing to read about genocide. Another thing is to see it with your own eyes, even on TV.

And if any of you fuckers tries to tell me that both "sides are the same" or that "democrats did the same" or something in that vein, they are obviously doing this in bad faith and they can go fuck themselves. 🖕🤬

For me the turning point was when a failed Windows forced upgrade ended up deleting me important files. I had backups, but I lost days of work because Microsoft felt so insecure in the face of piracy that they had to upgrade my computer despite me constantly telling them not to do so.

That was around 10 years ago. I went through various KDE distros; in the end I settled for Kubuntu.

The recent developments in KDE plasma are excellent. I haven't had to open a command prompt in years. I hadn't had a tech problem until this year when my tmp folder got full.

What constitutes fair use?

17 U.S.C. § 107

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 17 U.S.C. § 106 and 17 U.S.C. § 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright.

GenAI training, at least regarding art, is neither criticism, comment, news reporting scholarship, nor research.

AI training is not done by scientists but engineers of a corporative entity with a long term profit goal.

So, by elimination, we can conclude that none of the purposes covered by the fair use doctrine apply to Generative AI training.

LOL this reminds me of the numerous news articles that kept saying how Mastodon wouldn't scale and how it would never take off. The most ridiculous one: "Mastodon is crumbling". (We're over 13 million users right now.)

At this point, I'd like to ask: If a foreign company threatens democracy in a country, is it legal for the executive to ban business with that company?

No? Then that doesn't make sense. It's a FOREIGN company, the government should have the right to do whatever it needs to protect its citizens in that regard.

It's a grassroots fedi movement aimed at blocking big Corporate social media networks (like Twitter and Facebook) from the fediverse.

Wait a minute. The cars can barely drive, and now you want them to enforce the law???

That is the most insane shit I've ever heard.
