The fediverse, while still social media, has a level of authenticity unrivaled by most major social medias in my opinion. Hopefully it stays that way!

I would pay more to get a car with more buttons than you can comprehend and a small little infotainment system that allows you to play music than a super futuristic car with a iPad in the center and nothing else in the center console area.

It seems to me that recently, Big Tech CEOs have been searching for interesting and creative ways to utterly destroy their company with no chance to rebuild it. Maybe he is trying to do that? At this point, it seems to me like Elon is doing his best diligence to set money on fire and run Twitter into the ground.

Exactly, most headphones that I like are wired with an ordinary audio jack. I don't really feel inclined to get new headphones for a new phone, and a phone without an audio jack just makes things more difficult for me.

zoom in a little towards the board

NewPipe costs $13.99 less on my phone (where I watch YouTube most), and it has a better UX (for me) than the official app.

More reasons to keep using Firefox just keep on coming up like excellent extensions, in-browser PDF editor, and now more speed. I switched to Firefox 2 years ago with uBO and I don't think I'd ever switch back to Chrome.

If a game I want to purchase has Denuvo, I just move on. It shows me that the game publisher doesn't care as much about their users as they do their own profit. Plus, I also could just play another game that I already have.

  • NewPipe has made my YouTube watching experience way better; it's a standalone app with features like ad blocking, subscriptions, and downloading.
  • F-Droid (particularly the Droid-ify client) is an open-source app store that generally provides quality apps.
  • Obtanium has helped me stay up to date with some of my more obscure apps, which are released only on Github. Obtanium can auto-update apps from a GitHub link or similar, which makes the process way easier.
  • Auxio is a pretty good music player, it's quite lightweight but it also looks good.

All of these are available on F-Droid, I find that many F-Droid apps provide a better or cleaner experience than Google Play apps.

Maybe he shoulda just stuck with the bird, or thought of a name that is even a tad more creative. I'm pretty sure a hamster or a piece of paper could do a better job at managing Twitter than Muskrat is right now.

This is probably one of the better pieces of news I have heard about ChromeOS, it seems like this could make ChromiumOS easier to support and make Chromebooks less useless.

I like seeing more uncommon TLDs be used that aren't just .com, .org, or .net. Variety's kinda cool.

Plus, Newpipe and the likes have been doing pretty well at getting around YouTube ads so far, it's just the main YouTube website that has been more problematic.

Because of their enshittification to chase pandemic profits, it's just so much better to pirate now.

ViMusic and InnerTune are both available on F-Droid, and are both YouTube Music clients (with reccomendations!). ViMusic is more established, but InnerTune seems to be more up-to-date.

FOSS over piracy for sure. While the UI and/or functionality is not often as good as the proprietary option with FOSS apps, I feel a lot more comfortable using them because they are free and you can see what's going on with them better.

For those that use the Signal messenger, Langis is just Signal without Google Play services.

Good ol' enshittification. I'm glad that I haven't used Google Search for a couple of years now, things serm to be getting even worse on it than other search engines. Fuck Google.

There is Plexus which does this, I think they have an app now which could have more recent data than the website that you could get off of F-Droid (but I'd rather just use the website anyway).

Legit, I only looked there for the megathread too. It was just a cesspool of low effort content and people who didn't check the megathread, if I'm gonna be honest.

new response just dropped

Yes, but you are access have been reported, so they reported that you are access.

I love ViMusic, it's helped me find a lot of music over thr time I've used it. Its reccomendations are quite good, and I can just donate to the artist if I like the music instead of trusting my streaming service to underpay them.

Don't forget NewPipe for Android, Yattee for Apple devices, SmartTube for most Android TV boxes, Playlet for Roku, and Invidious for PC (if you don't like Piped).

The only (usable) platform I can think of without a ad-free YouTube client is maybe webOS for LG TVs.

(some of these clients are also missing some features because they are new, but they should all be better for watching than the official app)

I agree, there are some insane FOSS apps and programs like NewPipe (kinda uses proprietary but eh, there's no real replacement for YouTube) that I would always prefer over a pirated version of another, better known app.

It seems apps like SpotiFlyer and Spotube both use the Spotify discovery API but actually get the music from YT Music (which is already easy to download using yt-dlp, NewPipe, or another app of your choice). Kinda sad that I can't find a way to pirate music off of Spotify yet, but YT Music is pretty good for my purposes.

Still can't believe people use uTorrent even though it became malware so long ago. Like come on guys, really? There are a ton of way better clients like qBit and Transmission, and they are just stuck in their own ways to their detriment.

I'll give you a few from F-Droid (and maybe IzzyOnDroid too):

  • Auxio is a pretty good lightweight music player
  • NewPipe is an anonymous YouTube client without ads or tracking
  • Obtanium is an app that allows you to auto-update apps from many sources like GitHub, GitLab, and F-Droid
  • Bromite (use this repo instead of the out of date F-Droid version) is a hardened version of Chromium with features like ad blocking and less spyware Those are just a couple apps, there are a ton more on F-Droid. I reccomend using the Droid-ify client because it has more default repos and better UI.

I've been lurking on Reddit for years now but now that I've switched to Lemmy, I'll probably participate in discussions more. Plus, the vibe is so much more positive and welcoming here than on Reddit!

For example, the NewPipe community on lemmy.ml is tiny and pretty much dead, whereas the Reddit one was much more active. Communities like that which have reopened might make people want to stay on Reddit, unfortunately.

Exactly. I don't pirate too much, I'm happy just playing my favorite video games (paid for because they are good) and talking in chat rooms, but if I wanted to play a Nintendo Game with friends I would 100% pirate it; it's ethical in this case and I have really no other way to do it.

add a new square to the left (i5) to give the horseys more room

If something like the AC, gear switching, volume controls, or another essential function is only usable via the touchscreen, I'd just stop considering that car because it's unsafe and time consuming to use touchscreens in cars. They're right, too much tech in cars is very annoying and I think most people (like me) would rather have dedicated physical buttons to control most actions in a car.

I hear more and more about this every day, about some design flaw. Didn't they think it through? I may be dumb but even I would nope out if the sub was unable to complete any of its test runs successfully.

Some days I think "People can't possibly be that dumb, right?" and them I'm let down every time, 'cause they are.

Seems to apply to everything involving people.

There is a similar app named Yattee, but it's not exactly the same. It should still work well to watch videos privately, though.

I have a Pixel myself and I have to say, it's a good phone. It has a coherent experience and I've been able to customize it to my needs.

I also had a couple of phones from other OEMs (not Apple, lol) and they had more useless bloatware that was a pain, and an overall less coherent UX. I think the UX is what gets users to stay (obviously), so I do hope that more Android OEMs will focus in more on that so they can break Apple's market domination in the US.

Probably schools, those bad boys are pretty much designed to be used in schools. They are easy for the sysadmin to manage and they are easy to use for the student. They charge fast and stay charged for a long time, and most things a student would need can be found online. They also make it harder for a student to brick their own computer or do things they shouldn't. Even if they are horribly Google-ridden, they do work well in schools.

It should be, because it is on the FMHY megathread, and it's fairly reputable.

Edit: I didn't real the question fully, but I presume that it should be safe if you are cautious as normal. Of course you will be exposed to malware, but it probably will require you to download it before it works.

Chromebooks are nearly perfect student devices, especially newer ones.

They charge quickly, have long battery lives, and most things students would need are easily accessible on Chrome. As well, it's a little bit harder for students to exploit and put their own apps on in my experience, because it requires more knowledge than what most students have to counter things like social media blocks (Games are kinda an exception though).

While they probably aren't the best for other forms of usage, they are very good school devices. I wouldn't even consider using Macs or Windows laptops at schools instead.
