Smoke + fog = smog. Why didn't they just call it that?
I asked myself the exact same question as I read it
IIRC while it was originally coined as that portmanteau, it was later "officially" used only for the haze caused by nitrous oxides, ozones and sulfur dioxide from leaded gas/diesel vehicles, coal power, and industrial operations.
Not an etymologist though.
