I always thought the point of the loss meme was a sort of "sad rickroll". That people thought the comic was so sad, and the joke was to remind people of it and make them sad.
Needless to say, I didn't get it. I thought "people find this really sad I guess". It was just last week I found out that people do not in fact think it is sad, and the point is just to mock the cartoon
It achieved infamy for tonal whiplash. The series it's from is usually irreverent and goofy. so the very heavy subject coming out of nowhere was...not received well.
The tonal whiplash doesn't end there. I think a lot of it started as g*mers just being immature but then Buckley said his girlfriend needed to "get over it" and tried to groom a minor, so he kinda just burned all bridges on the topic.
Yeah I think overall that Loss being a meme has less to do with the text of the comic itself and more the backlash and the backlash to the backlash. Few people engaging with the Loss meme are actually talking about miscarriages; I did see an example recently called "Loss but it's a red state" which was actually a brilliant bit of political satire. And it's almost a different meme to the one that produced :.|:; which is closer to "you just lost the game."
Yeah, no. It was (/is? damn, dude's still going. Good for him.) a comedy/commentary comic mostly about gaming and basically interactions that wouldn't be out of place in a Clarks movie. This was a standalone just a week or so before Loss.
Que super serious miscarriage storyline for "art" reasons.
The guy who made it was a talentless egomaniac. He wanted to prove that he was a serious adult who could make serious adult stories, and instead of slowly transitioning into a more serious plot like say El Goonish Shiv or Concession or (not a webcomic, but No Evil)
He just jumped into a miscarriage story and then when people didn't like it.. well the other "Super Adult Story" thing to do is kill off characters, so he killed everyone off and just focused on background characters..
but again instead of slowly building up the background characters and bring them closer to the forefront.... they were just... thrust into the front with no fanfare, no defined personality...
So the already low-tier webcomic sank even lower.
I believe his girlfriend had a miscarriage and that inspired that comic. But it came out of nowhere and didn't fit the comic. If I remember correctly the next strip the guys talked about how tough it is (gf not present) and then if was back to gaming
I mean, the dude also showed his junk to an underage girl. Smart decisions aren't his thing.
