It looks to me that they’re basically doing it as a desperate last resort.

"even though mods hate us, everyone else loves reddit. See these recent spikes in user engagement"

It can only be accessed through their mobile app, or on the web with the new interface (old.reddit.com won't work).

They don't care what people are putting on the board, it's still an increase in people engaging with the new interface and the official app.

Just like they don't care about r/pics turning into John Oliver only. It pumps up the numbers, so they can show advertisers and investors a rosy outlook.
