Current state of r/place

It warms my heart to see so much fuck spez amidst the normal nation-state flag spam.

Thank you for the screenshot so I don't have to give Reddit any traffic.

If you sort by New on /r/place people are asking who is Spez.

This is appalling

Sounds like that Spez person is a very popular porn star.

Yes he’s the guy that flirted with doing underage porn while moderating the jailbait sub.

Aaaah, is it the one who is a doctor, an engineer, a police officer, a firefighter, a teacher, a carpenter and everything else? Is that very talented dude?

Johnny Sins would probably be a more competent CEO than Spez by wearing a suit and fucking someone on the couch.

Dude probably loves getting shit on in his movies.

Classic tactic. Let em rant in a special "freedom zone" and do nothing else. I know, obvious, but still maddening. I left reddit behind forever.

Yeah there is no way they didn't intend this when they opened it back up. It's protest theatre, give them a punching bag so they don't stir up real shit.

Being enraged is also being engaged (see Fox News).

So this was a great tactic because all the people that could have left reddit are still there yelling into the void.

Exactly my thoughts. They saw a drop in traffic this month after the API changes killed 3rd party apps and just want to boost this month's numbers so it doesn't hurt their valuation and upcoming IPO further.

So this was a great tactic because all the people that could have left reddit are still there yelling into the void.

I feel like those people are pretty dumb. Like, if they could all just leave and go elsewhere, they'd be much better off than yelling in circles and not getting anything accomplished.

The website is obviously run by a crazy fuckhead CEO, so might as well go elsewhere - especially somewhere decentralized where that can't be a problem.

Cringe flagspam ruins this shit every time.

B-but my defining character trait is the country that I was born in. Yes, I am the most boring person alive, why do you ask?

The giant French flag especially is ridiculous (and I’m saying this as a French person). Also, I was expecting more fuck u/spez, but I guess the normies don’t care

Edit: wow I sound salty (I am)

Did you look again? That French flag was a setup for a guillotine of spez. Granted it didn't need to be that big, but they had a goal and they sure did execute it.

It's exactly what would happen if facebook made r/place.

I don't think it's cringe, more of an indication on what's going on in reddit. Rip another "cool" social network.

They're doing r/place again? Didn't they just have one last year or something? I thought it was supposed to be once every five years event, much like somebody telling spez he is loved.

It looks to me that they’re basically doing it as a desperate last resort.

"even though mods hate us, everyone else loves reddit. See these recent spikes in user engagement"

It can only be accessed through their mobile app, or on the web with the new interface (old.reddit.com won't work).

They don't care what people are putting on the board, it's still an increase in people engaging with the new interface and the official app.

Just like they don't care about r/pics turning into John Oliver only. It pumps up the numbers, so they can show advertisers and investors a rosy outlook.

I’d rather see more “fuck Reddit” on there than spez. Spez isn’t the only one to blame for their issues, he’s just been at the forefront. He’ll get his golden parachute and bounce if all this anger is directly specifically towards him. My 3 pennies

Finding the right time for r/place to return proved to be a challenge – but hey, what better time to offer a blank canvas to our communities than when our users and mods are at their most passionate… right?

This is the most blatantly obvious "please boost our subscriber numbers" statement I've ever seen without directly calling for it.

That’s crazy I was just thinking a few days ago how funny it would be if they decided to do it again, and fuck u/spez got plastered all over it. Surreal that reality is a step ahead of me.

r/place from 2017 was one of the things that really pulled me into Reddit. I loved the idea and I appreciated the strong community engagement with it.

2022 was fun but disappointing to see mostly just MORE flags and big douchy streamers covering up some of the actually decent artwork with their logos.

And now again in 2023? I predict there’s no way this isn’t a dumpster fire and a big bold fuck spez will end up on the final version.

Someone else mentioned it below but we should REALLY use this opportunity to get more Lemmy exposure on there.

What subs do you think would be most on board? redditalternatives? that modcoordinator one? I will sign up as a pixel trooper, this could help spread awareness on how far Reddit sentiment has fallen.

Inb4 every black pixel gets a warning that they'll be replaced by a different user. Repeat black pixel posters get perma banned without warning.

The canvas already has the same junk from last year. Looks like people are getting memory holed faster than expected.

Saying "Fuck u/Spez" on Reddit is like protesting McDonald's by buying BigMacs.

It seems like going to McDonald's and handing out flyers. It might briefly make McDonald's look more popular but in the long run it could peel away customers.

True, we should advertise federated alternatives instead. Can we make a Lemmy icon with "Lemmy" next to it somehow?

They can't have seriously thought this would work in their favor lmao

People just want to consume mindless entertainment. I'm extremely jaded over the whole thing and I'll be very glad to be proven wrong, but I betcha regular users will participate as usual and drown out any form of protest.

Preaching to the choir there. But with that being said, a lot of the actual content creators on reddit have jumped ship. It's still going but it's not as busy as it used to be, and upvote/comment numbers are down across almost every sub whenever I look at it. There is clearly a market for that form of content, seeing how it has frequently been plagiarized by Youtubers, instagrammers, and now tiktokers for the past decade or so. If that content truly falls off then reddit will be in serious trouble.

It still boosts their stats up.

Sure, but at the same time all of the casual redditors who somehow weren't aware of the controversy (the ones making threads asking who spez is, for example) are now going to learn more about the controversy and be informed enough to make their own decisions on continuing to use the site. For the short term their engagement will go up but it's very possible that their long-term engagement drops even further after this decision

After weeks of not giving their users a platform to speak about the changes they decide to give their users a giant platform, some real 4D chess being played here

Reddit's admins should be declared legally blind because there's no other explanation for how they could couldn't have seen this coming.

I was on Reddit for 12 years and I’ve literally never even heard of r/place until people started talking about it coming back this week

I normally don't sympatize with Germans. But today I smile upon them.

Love how foxhole has gone for exactly the same art as last time
