I mean, that's an appeal to authority (one of the well known fallacies). Not saying these people are smart, but that logic doesn't make sense.
There was some nobel prize winning scientist who literally claimed white people were genetically superior to blacks.
Appeal to authority isn't a fallacy if it's a relevant authority, though. The US federal courts are a pretty dang relevant authority on US federal crimes.
