I think this might depend on the app/instance you're using, but Jerboa and lemmy.world both seem to have the ability to collapse comments, for me at least!
After all this time I noticed this reply. I installed your Firefox extension and it seems to be mostly working (navigate with hjkl, Enter to open link), but others are not working (az to vote, c to enter comments). I'm using old.lemmy.world.
Anyway, I much appreciate the extra flexibility, so thanks!
